on the web because they want it to
be found, so very few choose not to
include their material in Google
News and web search,” Google said
in a statement. “But if they tell us not
to include it, we don't.”
Writing at his news
aggregator website Newser.com,
Michael Wolff, author of a biography
about Mr Murdoch titled The Man
Who Owns the News, described the
News Corp chief's comments as the
latest salvo in his “war with the
internet”.
“It is quite possible he
doesn't realise and can't fathom
that removing News Corp's
newspapers from Google means
that, in the largest part of the
information market, they would
cease to count,” Wolff said.
Although Mr Murdoch also
named Microsoft among those who
“steal our stories,” media and
technology blogs said he may be
considering a deal that would give
Bing, the software giant's new
search engine, exclusive access to
News Corp material.
The Wall Street Journal is
currently the only News Corp daily
that charges for online access to all
of its content and reportedly
receives some 25 per cent of its
traffic via Google News. Other
prominent newspapers in the News
Corp stable include The Australian,
the New York Post and The Times of
London. News Corp is also the
parent company of the owner of
news.com.au.
Murdoch had hoped to have
pay barriers in place by June of next
year, but he said 10 days ago during
a News Corp earnings call the plan
would be delayed. “We are working

seeking to carve out a digital
future in an era of free news
online and eroding print
advertising revenue and
circulation.
With US newspapers
struggling, charging readers
online is “certainly getting more of
a look than it used to,” said Mr
Edmonds.
“The big concern is you
lose much more in online
advertising revenue than you
make in online subscription
revenue,” he said. “Maybe that's
a closer call than it was a few
years ago.”

A PARTY promoter has banned "metrosexuals"
from a popular club night in a bid to stamp out
violence.
The promoter, credited with bringing the Perth-
based event Dorcia to Melbourne in September,
warned punters they would not get in wearing
trademark metrosexual attire - for example, low-cut V-
neck T-shirts, skinny jeans and pointed white shoes.
Scott Mellor said the move was made to end a
"sports jock mentality" and a growing trend of
aggression inside clubs and bars.
"We are really trying to push a party night that
is a safe place to go and have a good time without
worrying about safety," the 27-year-old said.
"We wanted to shed light on the problems with
nightlife in Australia. We took everything that we

regime, but her land has been left

Living large: life as a world record judge
From growing long ghastly
fingernails to gobbling down
countless chillies, people all over
the world have been making
wacky attempts to earn
themselves a spot in the
Guinness Book of Records for
decades.
Earlier this year a
Bundaberg man, who had spent
years collecting secondhand bras,
linked his lingerie together to make
the longest chain of bras in the
world.
Whatever the idea or
motivation, there is a good chance
Chris Sheedy was there to judge
whether the bid was successful.
As Australia's Guinness
World Records representative,
Sheedy darts all over the country to
assess the legitimacy of Mexican
waves, arrow-catching, human
wheelbarrow races and more.
"It makes you see the world
as a child does - kids have a
wonderful imagination where they
think everything is fantastic," he told
ABC News Online.
"As adults, we only take
things seriously that people tell us to
take seriously. But it doesn't matter if
it's a 100-metre sprint at the Olympic
Games or a bloke putting snails on
his face, they're both as serious and
as interesting as each other."
In his 10 years working for
Guinness across Australia, New
Zealand and the United Kingdom,
two records in particular have stood
out to Sheedy.
"Being driven around the
night-time streets of London on the
world's fastest furniture, which is a
three-seater lounge chair with a
lamp and a coffee table, that does
140 kilometres per hour and is 100
per cent road legal," Sheedy said.
His other most memorable
moment is simply hanging out with
one of the world's tallest people.
Sheedy, who is 175
centimetres tall, spent a week with
the "very, very shy" Neil Fingleton, a
233-centimetre-tall Brit who is the
tallest man in the English-speaking
world.
"I'm average height and my
eyes came up to his jeans," Sheedy
said.
"You take your idea of tall
and you crush it up and throw it out
the window because you realise
you've actually never met a tall
person before until you meet these

guys.
"Having spent a lot of his life
being stared at and quite literally
standing out in a crowd, [Neil] didn't
like attention very much.
"But then as soon as we went
and sat down at the pub and had a
few beers, he was just another guy at
the pub because he was sitting down.
He was great. A great guy to hang
around."
The Arrow Catcher
Despite the endless travel
zapping his energy at times, Sheedy
loves his job and takes all record
attempts very seriously.
"You have to stick to your
guns because we are about evidence
and we are about doing it right and if
somebody doesn't do it right, that's
just too bad," he said.
"The facts stand and they
haven't got the record no matter how
sad they are about it."
He says he would never
laugh at people for having a go at
records that some would consider to
be "silly things".
"Some people gain a small
sense of identity from it and as long
as that's a healthy thing, that's good,"
Sheedy said.
One such person is Anthony
Kelly, who is known around the world
as the Arrow Catcher. With 18
Guinness titles to his name, he is
Australia's most prolific title-holder.
He is the king of catching
super-fast dangerous objects: arrows
fired at him from point blank range,
paintball bullets without them going
off and spears from spearguns under
water.
This week, Kelly gained
another Guinness record for catching
the most tennis balls from a tennis
ball machine while blindfolded.
The balls were being pelted
at him at 100 kilometres per hour
from just six metres away and he still
managed to catch 10 of the "bullet
like" balls in a minute.
The martial arts expert and
father from Armidale, in the NSW
northern tablelands, has trooped
all over the globe for over a
decade to show off his reflex skills
- and he has his eye on getting
even more records.
"I'm only here on this
planet for a short time and I want
to try and get as much out of this
life as I can so I am always
challenging myself physically and
mentally to better myself," he told

ABC News Online.
"Other people say why would
you want to do such a thing? I don't
know, it's just my normal life now it
seems. I like to challenge myself."
Record: fail
Even though he has achieved
many precarious feats, Kelly admits he
has "failed dismally" at many record
attempts, like eating seven chocolates
in a minute.
"I only ate three - after 20
seconds I still had one in my mouth," he
laughed.
But that is the part of his work
Chris Sheedy hates the most - rejecting
those who have put so much effort into
getting that pesky record, which he
says happens about 96 per cent of the
time.
"You walk in as the most
popular person in the city and you walk
out as the least popular person
because you're the one who
disappointed everyone," he said.
But he hopes to stay popular in
Adelaide at the weekend, when he will
adjudicate the city's second attempt at
doing the world's longest Mexican
wave.
Last year they failed because
the wave kept stalling at one particular
corner.
"That's one of the times I've
hated my job - having to tell 250,000
people they didn't have a record,"
Sheedy said.
"But I think they'll break it this
year. They reckon they'll have between
200,000 and 300,000 people lining the
streets of Adelaide for this particular
event, which should be fantastic.”

Baby boomers bounce badly into old age
BABY boomers can
expect to live long lives, but
they won't be healthy,
according to new research
showing they already suffer
more disability than their
elders did.
The study, to be
published in January in the
American Journal of Public
Health, focussed on boomers
aged 60 to 69 and found they
displayed increasing disabilities
over time.
In contrast, the
researchers -- with the University
of California at Los Angeles and
the University of Southern
California -- found that people
between 70 and 79 years
showed no significant increases
in disability and, in some cases,
exhibited fewer disabilities than

did their parents.
The results, which will
surprise many health-obsessed
boomers, come on the heels of a
study in The Lancet, reported last
month in Weekend Health.
There, international
researchers found that more than
half the babies born since 2000 in
developed nations such as
Australia will live to 100 years or
more if trends continue.
According to the leader of
the California team, UCLA
epidemiologist Professor Teresa
Seeman, the findings hold
"significant and sobering
implications".
She said: "If this trend
continues unchecked, it will put
increasing pressure on our society
to take care of these disabled
individuals."
And it would do so as more
boomers retired.
Although their study was
based on US data, UCLA team
member Associate Professor Arun
Karlamangla said the results were
relevant for Australia, despite the
difference in healthcare coverage.
"Our findings have more to
do with changing lifestyles in
developed nations than with access
to healthcare," said Karlamangla, a
geriatric physician. He added that
since study participants were all
older than 60 years they were
eligible for Medicare, and only a
"very small" percentage reported
they did not have a regular doctor.
University of Melbourne
public health expert Professor Rob
Moodie agreed. "We may be living
longer, but as life expectancy
continues to rise that's an
opportunity for increasing disability,"
said Moodie, who chaired the
commonwealth's Preventive Health
Taskforce.
He also agreed with
Karlamangla that, while it was
difficult to tease out all the factors
contributing to increasing boomer
disability, the critical contributor was
behavioural.

generation," Moodie said of
Australians born in the post-
World War II baby boom.
"The irony is that 60 or
100 years ago we'd rest from our
labours every hour or two," he
said. "That's been stolen from
our lives."
He added: "For example,
car ownership is about six times
what it was in the 1960s.
Patterns of walking to school
have been completely tipped on
their head. "Thirty years ago
about 70 per cent of kids walked
to school. Now about 70 per cent
are driven."
The result of increasingly
low levels of activity is reduced
fitness and increased weight and
obesity. Both are precursors to
health difficulties, among them
diabetes Type II, cardiovascular
disease and muscle and skeletal
disorders.
Using two sets of data
from the US National Health and
Nutrition Examination Surveys,
Seeman's group found boomers
performed poorly in four types of
activities: basic activities of daily
living like walking from room to
room and getting in and out of
bed, along with instrumental
activities such as cooking or
performing household chores.
Boomers also did poorly
on measures of mobility --
including walking half a kilometre
or climbing 10 steps without a
breather -- and functional abilities
such as stooping, crouching or
kneeling.

Richie Benaud signs new three-year deal
with Channel Nine
YOU know how Richie
Benaud is retiring this
summer? Well, he's not.
The 79-year-old's
marvellous cricketing voice will
be heard for at least another
four summers on Channel
Nine's cricket
coverage after he
agreed to a new
three-year deal with
network chief David
Gyngell.
He was
already contracted
for the coming
summer, which was
to be his last, and his
new contract will take
him through to April
1, 2013, and into his
83rd year, The
Sunday Telegraph
reports.
The cricket
and commentating
great signed on again because
he simply didn't want to give up
working on the game he loves.
Benaud said that, after
this summer, his role would
change slightly from that of
ball-by-ball commentary.
He said he wanted to
continue to be part of the
Channel Nine family, and the
station felt the same way about
their long-time star.
Gyngell asked him over
lunch last Monday at Otto in
Woolloomooloo if he wanted to
"keep going".

"One thing I don't think we
should forget is how well he played in

wins a captain's heart and loyalty
when it comes to lobbying for
places in the first Test later this
month.
Ponting is long enough of
tooth to talk about legacies these
days.
"I have always enjoyed
having the young guys come into
the team because I feel I have to
welcome them in and pass on my
knowledge of the game to those
guys," he said.
"The recent Test series in
South Africa was a defining moment
for a lot of the young players.
Unfortunately we couldn't do the

flame that had suddenly engulfed

the act - WWF wrestling,
Bolivian-style, where the men
beat up on the chicks.
I wasn't convinced.
Neither were the smarter tourists
who had long fled out the front
door to wait in the relative
serenity of their tour bus, either
appalled by the fictional beltings
or for fear of being burned alive.
Conversely, the locals
were lapping up the
entertainment, loudly baying for
the blood of the villains and
bellowing at every moment of
hilarity. For them, this was a
routine Sunday afternoon
spectacle, an event well worth
saving a pocketful of Bolivianos
for a month to get your family in
the door.
For the locals, residents
of La Paz's sprawling slum
suburb of El Alto, this was the
highlight of the year.

international airport, there is

captivating cityscape, resembling a
deep ant-infested soup bowl,
hemmed in on one side by the
snow-capped Illampu Mountain, the
other by narrow suburbs that reach
for the sky.
The urban focus for many
travellers who venture to this
dizzying capital is the infamous
witches' market, a collection of
narrow and busy cobbled streets
where you can score a bargain.
That's if you have a
penchant for llama fetus and spell

Wandering the market is an
enlightening experience, practising
your Spanish bartering techniques,
enjoying the peaceful nature of the
locals and sampling their wares,
whether it be a "genuine' alpaca
scarf, or a barbecued chorizo.

here go about their business decked
out in elaborate indigenous
costumes, complete with a long
flowing dress, a thick layer of multi-
coloured knitted jumpers, the stylish
and well-balanced Bolivian hat that
sits high and braided hair that
plunges below their posteriors.

Europea-style squares and watch
them knit or sell their wares is
captivating.
Perhaps the best square to
get a feel for the real La Paz is San
Pedro, a well-manicured hideaway
where the locals come to siesta in
