Monochromatic Colors
Different values of a single hue
Tint: Hue +White
Shade: Hue + Black
Outline every value shape with a colored pencil
Divide a sheet of 12x18 poster board
into 1 squares
Transfer the
colored pencil
shapes to the
poster board, 1
square at a time.
TIP:
As you draw, it
helps to isolate
one row or one
square, drawing
just a little bit at
a time. It also
helps to lightly
number your
columns and
rows in pencil.
Select a hue and create a
monochromatic color scale

Begin coloring
with the darkest
color in your
monochromatic
scale
(black+ a little
hue color)
Continue painting
shapes, working
dark to light. Try to
paint all of the
shapes of a same
value at once.
Continue painting,
1 value at time.
Apply paint in
thick layers with
hard edges.
For the background
A. Use a contrasting value not used a lot in the
portrait
Add a gray to your hue for a dull color
