Essay 1 - What would you like the GGSB admissions board to know about your professional work and

/ or academic
experience?

I’ve finished school in 2005. Even before I’ve finished it I’ve already been invited in
several Universities as I’ve started to search for a place to continue my education at the
beginning of my last school year. It was rather difficult to combine school program with entrance
examinations but I’ve coped with that and was accepted. I’ve always thrived under pressure and
craved a challenge. I use my competitive drive to set high standards for and to better myself. I
have goals and ambitions like most people, and am always looking for a more efficient strategy
to accomplish them.

Along with my education I’ve worked from time to time as an interpreter at international
exhibitions. It turned out to be a very interesting and informative job as every time on a new
exhibition you find out something new about different areas of life art or business depending on
the subject of the event. Not only my vocabulary grew rich but also my whole vision of some
concrete things like mascara or lipstick was changed. Every time with a new area of translation I
was opening a whole new world. Once working on a campaign which manufactured different
types of packaging I was shocked by the quantity of details and peculiarities which were
included in production of a simple tube.

Studying at the department of foreign languages and area studies it was also very
interesting to become aware of the tools which help to examine the similarities and differences
between different nations. I’ve got really interested in the subject of International movies and
cinematography as a mass communication medium and decided to continue my studies in this
area. I’ve enrolled on the course of lectures ‘Cultural Specificity of American Cinema’ and have
chosen to work in the seminar ‘Screen Adaptations of Literary Works in Cultural Studies’,
opting to write a graduation paper on the topic of ‘Comparison of Russian and foreign Screen
Versions of Works of Classical Russian Literature’. Having chosen the novel Anna Karenina by
Leo Tolstoy and its five different screen adaptations as the material for the research, I am
currently working on the paper.

But the experience of work at exhibitions has also let me understood that being just an
interpreter is not enough for me. And I want to get more specific education in a sphere of
business and more profound knowledge of how does everything work in this sphere.
