Multiplication Arrays

Title of Lesson: Multiplication Arrays - My Dream Home

Time Required for this lesson: 50 minutes


Materials/Resources:
Graph Paper
Pencil Crayons

Methods/Structure:

- The teacher should draw an array on the chalk board (e.g. 6 rows 4 columns) and explain to the
students that the array represents a multiplication sentence. The teacher will then show the
students how the array shows that 6x4 and why the area is then 24.
- The teacher will then ask the students to figure out what the multiplication sentence is for an
array that is drawn on the board (e.g. 5 rows and 6 columns).
- Repeat with 3 rows and 7 columns.
- Explain to students that we can use multiplication arrays when trying to figure out space. The
teacher should draw an array on the board to represent a room. Show students that if you have
a room thats 3 meters by 4 meters, you could figure out how much carpet would you need to
cover the floor in that room (12m). Explain that this is done exactly the same as was practiced
before.
- Repeat with 4 meters and 6 meters.

Instructional Strategies/Procedure for the Class:

- Students will each design their own dream home using arrays.
- Students will each get their own piece of graph paper and should design their house using only
squares and rectangles.
- They can then label what each room is (e.g. kitchen, movie room, bedroom, indoor pool room).
- After they have done this students should figure out the area that each room has using arrays
e.g. my indoor pool room is 3 meters by 5 meters (or 3 rows by 4 columns) so its area is 15
meters.
- Any students that finish this can color in each room on their sheet. If time allows, students can
figure out the entire area of their home by adding the area of each room together.

Differentiation:

- An E.A. will be working with Justin and Jonathan to create one dream house between the two of
them. The two boys are not required to figure out the multiplication on their own.
