Subject: Introduction to the Clarinet Objective: Teach student clarinet assembly and embouchure Time: 5 to 10 minutes
Procedure: Open case and give overview of the important parts of the clarinet: Mouthpiece Barrel Upper Joint Lower joint Bell Reed Metal Ligature *Explain the parts of the instrument while assembling the clarinet Give instruction on how to assemble the clarinet: Twist the bell on the cork part of the lower joint connect upper joint with lower joint show where a metal key must line up for the tone holes to line up properly attach the barrel to the upper joint have student moisten reed show where to place reed on the mouth piece be flush with the top of the mouthpiece put on metal ligature (should be a firmly screwed in, not too tight) attach mouthpiece to barrel Instruct good embouchure: *use just the mouthpiece first relax lips, bottom lip covering bottom teeth front teeth rest on mouthpiece full breath, dont push bottom lip too much on reed not too much of mouth over mouthpiece cheeks shouldnt puff out when blowing into mouthpiece adjust for the particular student Have student practice playing instrument first tone will be C all tone holes of left hand covered: C lift one: D Lift two: E Listen and Echo various patterns use just one pitch then moving on to two pitches if there is time all three pitched of C to E
