Using ICT in school.

The case of
Changombe Secondary school

Introduction

Dar es Salaam University College of
Education (DUCE), was declared
Constituent College of the University of
Dar es Salaam in 2005;
Changombe secondary school is owned
by DUCE as a demonstration school;
The use of ICT in Changombe secondary
schools is extremely low.
Purpose

The aim of the change project is to
influence the use of ICT in teaching,
learning and school administration in
Changombe Secondary School
owned by DUCE.

10 teachers & 5 school administrators;
Various activities will be implemented to
achieve specific objectives;
Teachers form 1- 4 having diploma
certificate in teaching;
The project duration - 1 and year

Scope

Stakeholders
The main stakeholders will be involved
indirectly including IT department,
procurement department, school library,
college library, Faculty of Education (FOE),
students (from secondary school/college),
Ministry of Education etc.

Objectives

To be able to use ICT (blogging; communication - emailing,
chatting) in teaching and learning process for 10 teachers;
To be able to use ICT (communication - emailing, chatting) in
the school administration for 5 school administrators;
To be able to design and develop 1 school blog for
information sharing and communication;
To be able to upload various school-related videos, pictures
and text information in a school blog;
To be able to link various web based resources to a school
blog;
To be able to establish email and chatting accounts for
communication among 10 teachers and 5 school
administrators for school communication.

Outputs

To train 10 teachers on the importance of using ICT in teaching and
learning process;
To train 5 teachers (includes the head of school and academic
masters/mistress) on the importance of using ICT in school
administration;
To undertake computer basic skills training for 10 teachers;
To undertake information literacy skills training for 10 teachers;
To design and develop at least one school blog
To upload school-related 1 video, 5 pictures and 10 one paragraph
text information per month in the school blog;
To link at least 5 hyperlinks useful for students and teacher to a
school blog per month;
At least 10 teachers and 5 school administrators create, use and
communicate through the use of free email services (yahoo, google
or hotmail);
At least 10 teachers and 5 school administrators create, use and
communicate through the use of free chatting services (facebook or
twitter).

Expected results (outcomes)

Teaching and learning materials including school-
related videos, pictures and text information
developed by teachers uploaded on the school
blog;
Many administrative activities are coordinated
online/through the school blog and other web
based communication applications;
Students have a wide access to web based
resources through the school blog;
Teachers and students have a wide opportunity to
interact through e-mail, chatting, twitting etc;
Regular linking of various web based resources to
a school blog to enhance teaching and learning.

Activities
Day 1 until day 30: Analysing ICT situation in Changombe secondary schools

Day 31 and 35: Report writing based on ICT analysis

Day 36 and 38: Strategic workshop to school teachers and school administrators (awareness)

Day 39: Meeting with Dean Faculty of Education at DUCE

Day 40 and 41: Meeting with heads i.e Changombe secondary schools

Day 42 and 51: Meeting with other stakeholders

Day 52 and 53: Meeting with DUCE IT department

Day 54 until 64: Review strategic change project to suit the need of the school
Day 65 until day 460: Implementation of ICT in school Computer basic & IL training; Design and develop
and use a school blog AND Communication via emails and chats

Day 461 until day 490: Evaluation of ICT in school Changombe secondary schools

Day 491 until 520: Report writing

Day 521 until 540: Submission of the final report/document

Monitoring and Evaluation
Monitoring will be done regularly based
mainly on the various activities of the project;
Evaluation will be done at the end of the
project based on the logic model (linking
objectives, activities, outputs and outcome) of
the project.
Various techniques will be used such as
interview, observation, focus group discussion,
documentary review etc
