Classroom Procedures and Expectations

Attendance
It goes without saying that attendance in this class is mandatory and as such students will be
expected to catch up on any missed work. If a student has an excused absence he/she may ask
for extra time in order to complete an assignment. Students who are away for a cooking lab due
to an excused absence will be exempt from that lab, the lab will not affect their overall grade
for the unit, and this will appear as a blank on D2L. Students will arrive to class on time. As all of
the lab work is completed in groups, being late creates a problem for the entire group.

Assignments
A sufficient and fair amount of time is always provided in class for students to finish their work.
I do not give homework and workbooks are not allowed to leave the classroom. Workbooks are
frequently checked for assignment completion and students who have not meet an assignment
deadline the day of a cooking lab will not be permitted to participate in cooking that day(until
the assignment is finished and checked for completion). A student who does not participate in a
cooking lab due to unfinished work will receive a grade of zero for their lab. Plagiarism will not
be tolerated. If a student is caught copying other students work or caught cheating during an
exam they will receive a phone call home and a zero on that assignment/exam. Students will
receive a grade of zero in D2L for any assignments not completed the day they are due. This
grade however CAN change once the assignment is completed.

Preparedness
Students will arrive with all materials needed for class as unnecessary locker trips will not be
permitted. A lot of the work we will be doing this term involves Internet research. While I will
be providing students with Ipads it is not always possible to secure a full class set every day. It is
therefore the expectation that High school students who own a laptop, Ipad, or tablet bring
them to every class. It is expected that students arrive to class with the following materials:
-Pen/pencil/eraser
-Laptop/Ipad/tablet

Leaving the Classroom
It is expected that you ask before leaving the classroom and put your name on the board. Only
one girl and one boy can use the washroom/leave the room at a time. Aprons are not allowed
to leave the classroom.

Extraneous Materials
Cell phones, gaming devices, foods and beverages (other than water) are not permitted in the
classroom at any time. If I see a cellphone or gaming device I will take it away and you can get it
back at the end of class. If I see your cellphone or gaming device a second time I will take it
away and you can come get it at the end of the school day. If I see your cellphone or gaming
device a third time I will take it away and you can retrieve if from Ms. McDougall at the end of
the day. You may listen to music during work periods (NOT during labs and NOT during
lectures/class discussions).

Respect
Students are to conduct themselves in a mature and respectful manner. While in the lab or
classroom, students are advised to direct their full attention to their studies. Disrespect to
myself, other students, or substitute teachers will not be tolerated at any time. Often times,
whatever we are cooking smells great and naturally draws people to our classroom, however,
visitors will not be welcome unless previous arrangements have been made with me ahead of
time.

Attire
A kitchen CAN be a dangerous place if students dont recognize the dangers and dress
appropriately for class. It is therefore expected that students wear closed-toe shoes at all times
(no sandals, flip-flops, heels). Students with long hair (longer than chin length) will be asked to
tie their hair back. Students will be provided with aprons for use within the lab area.

Lab Days
-Cleanup must start no later than 10 minutes BEFORE the bell and students must ask for a
kitchen inspection before the bell rings.

-NO ONE will be dismissed at the bell if ALL of the kitchens have not been properly cleaned AND
inspected. This includes the tables.

-You will NEVER be dismissed before the bell. Please dont ask.

-Students are not permitted in the refrigerators, freezers, or pantry. All ingredients for your lab
will be out on the demonstration table at the beginning of each lab. If an ingredient is missing
ask me to get it for you.

-I carefully calculate how much of each ingredient I must purchase before each lab and
therefore under no circumstance are students allowed to use greater quantities of ingredients
than stated in their recipe. This would result in there not being enough ingredients for other
students or classes to use.

-Leftover food can only be taken home in student provided containers or a brown paper towel.
I do not provide containers, plastic wrap, or tin foil as such practices are bad for the
environment
