Artist: Romare Bearden
Title: The Woodshead
Medium: Cut and paste paper, cloth, pencil and masonite.
Size: 40 *50
Date: 1965

The artist Romare Bearden used cut and pasted paper, cloth, pencil on masonite to
create a collage The Woodshead. The artist was inspired by family and wanted to show how
poor they are. In the work titled The Woodshead the artist depicts family, that they ae not
really happy, he shows woman with children, husband, and a saxophone. Almost empty table
and broken house. The elements that the artist focused on in this artwork are: color, lines, value
and shapes. He arranged these elements to emphosize The Woodshead. I think the artist was
trying to show family from the old times based on what you see. The artwork makes me feel
sad, because, I see a mom sitting with her two children and her face expressions are sad &
tired, and also because I see very bad living environment. I like this artwork because in this
artwork you may create your own story based on this picture.
