You must be fuent in English and able to write well and quickly. Advanced language skills in Arabic, Mandarin and Russian for example are an advantage. Expertise in data analysis is a plus. A visual eye and multimedia experience will give you an edge. My favorite moments are those phone calls from the editor, telling me a great story is unfolding in a remote part of Kenya or elsewhere in the region, and asking very politely if I would mind jumping on the next plane to Zanzibar or Somalia.
