The Bergius Process involves finely grinding coal into a paste with heavy oil, then hydrogenating it under high pressure and temperature for 1.5 hours using a nickel or iron catalyst. This causes hydrogen to combine with the coal to form hydrocarbons. The vapors produced are condensed to a crude oil-like liquid that can be fractionally distilled to produce gasoline, middle oil, and heavy oil. The middle oil is cracked into more gasoline, and heavy oil is recycled in the process.

Written by V R Sunday, 02 January 2011 18:36 - Finely powdered coal is made in to paste with heavy oil.It is hydrogenated at a pressure of 200-300 atmospheres and 450 degree celsius in presence of nickel oleate or iron oxide as the catalyst for 1 and half hours.During this process hydrogen combines with coal to form a number of hydrocarbons. The vapours formed on cooling a liquid resembling to crude oil is obtained, which on fractional distillation gives three fractions(i) gasoline (ii) middle oil (iii) heavy oil, middle oil is converted to gasoline by cracking and heavy oil is recirculated.
