Finely powdered coal is made in to paste with heavy oil.It is hydrogenated at a pressure of
200-300 atmospheres and 450 degree celsius in presence of nickel oleate or iron oxide as the
catalyst for 1 and half hours.During this process hydrogen combines with coal to form a number
of hydrocarbons. The vapours formed on cooling a liquid resembling to crude oil is
obtained, which on fractional distillation gives three fractions(i) gasoline (ii) middle oil (iii) heavy
oil, middle oil is converted to gasoline by cracking and heavy oil is recirculated.
