Ode to an Element (Love Letter)
My dearest Oxygen,
It is I Zinc, the one and only element you would enjoy bonding with. Ive been adoring
you for quite a while now and I think its time for me to share my feelings toward you. Were not
that far apart on the periodic table, you being above me by a few elements. See, its meant to be.
I look at you and wonder how youre a nonmetal and I'm a metal, but you know opposites attract.
Metal + nonmetal is good, so dont worry.
Now, let me tell you a little bit about myself. Just in case if youre not familiar with who
I am. Like I said before I am Zinc my atomic number is 30, mass of 65.409, I am a color bluish,
located in the group of the metals, and have 35 neutrons. If there was a possibility of us coming
together as one, we could become the greatest thing ever. By you and I combining together, we
would create zinc oxide, we would be the new ZnO. We would be stronger together than apart.
Now, I would like to express to you all the different and amazing things we could become
together if we were to unite. I will be willing to do anything to please you, I know that you have
a charge of -2. I also know that you yourself love electrons and are looking for two electrons to
complete your shell. I will be willing to give you my electrons to make you happy.
Now here is what we, the new ZnO would become. Together we would have a molecular
mass of 81.389 grams per mole, we would be a white color, have an appearance of a crystalline
solid, and have a density of 5600 kg m
-3
. Am I convincing you yet? Together, we could make a
difference in the lives of many. We will be used to treat diaper rash, minor burns, severely
chapped skin, or other minor skin irritations. Humans would adore us; they would say were the
most useful and cutest bonded compound.
Oxygen, please accept this as a proposal. I want you, and only you to be the missing
piece to my compound. You wont be disappointed at any time; I will always be there for you
and be willing to do anything for you, my lovely Oxygen.
