In our second edition of Ask the Expert, we sit down with Dr.
Campbell and discuss how to attempt to heal sport injuries before
rushing to a doctor.

orthopedic surgeon, speciali'ing in sports injuries, and I"(e done surgeries for
major athletes such as Derrick *ose.$

to know the best wa! to tr! and remed! an! sports injuries, so that ma!be that trip
to the doctor"s isn"t needed.$
,ell it is alwa!s great to tr! and do all !ou can before seeing a doctor. I can
tell !ou from experience it can be frustrating to treat someone who reall! isn"t
injured. -f course for an! major injur!, the first thing !ou need to do is get to the
hospital, but for the lighter injuries, majorit! of the time !ou can heal them at
home.$

&irst, no matter the injur!, tr! to keep pressure on it to stop an!
inflammation. -nce !ou know !ou"re settled /back in the locker room, or at home0,
make sure to get ele(ate an! injur!, while also icing. If the injur! swells it can"t
heal, so make sure to do these. 1eep it constantl! ele(ated, and using a big bag of
ice, !ou must go 23min on, then 23min off, continuall! repeating. %ake sure the
ice is directl! on the skin, !ou don"t need a la!er in between, it just slows down the
process. 4ou"re skin will be fine, I promise. Do not use heat at all, especiall! not in
the first 25 hours. 6eat will produce swelling whether it feels like it"s soothing the
injur! or not, so sta! awa! from it. After 57 hours, if !ou can"t reduce the swelling
at all with rest, ice, compression, and ele(ation /*.I.C.E. for short0, then it"s time to
see the doctor.$
