Mumps

(Epidemic parotitis)

What is mumps?
Contagious disease that leads to painful
swelling
Salivary glands swell and so does the face
The glands produce saliva

Signs and Symptoms
Sore throat
Headache
Fever
Face pain
Difficulty breathing
Trouble swallowing
Male Symptoms
Testicle lump
Scrotal swelling
Testicle pain
Swelling of the temples or jaw

Viral or bacterial?
Mumps is viral
Commonly picked up by children
Spread through saliva


How to treat the disease
No specific treatment
Ice or heat applied to the neck and Tylenol can
help relieve pain
Dont give children aspirin if they have a viral
illness because of the risk of Reye syndrome
Extra fluids
Soft foods
Warm salt water gargles

What is the incubation period?
Can be anywhere between 16-24 days
Varies on the individual
Children have a longer period of time
How can it be prevented and is there a
vaccine?

MMR immunization
Protects against measles, mumps and rubella.
Should be given to children 12-15 months
Given again between ages 4-6 or 11-12 if it
wasnt given before

Is it contagious?

Yes
Most infectious from a few days before to 5
days after the onset of mumps
Isolate patients for 5 days after the glands
start to swell
