Absolute

Extrema (Maximum and Minimum)

Find the absolute maximum and absolute minimum values of the function on the
given closed interval .

Exercise 3, p. 223
= ! + 4 10, = [4,3]

Step 1. Determine the critical number.

= ! + 4 10

! () = 2 + 4

0 = 2 + 4

2 = 4

= 2

Step 2. Evaluate () at the endpoints and at the critical numbers that are within the
closed interval. The largest value obtained is the absolute maximum, while the
smallest is the absolute minimum. (Exclude the critical numbers that are outside the
given interval).

4 = (4)! + 4 4 10 = 10

3 = (3)! + 4 3 10 = 11

2 = (2)! + 4 2 10 = 14

In the given closed interval, the absolute maximum is 3 = 11 at point
(3,11) and the absolute minimum is 2 = 14 at point (-2,-14).

Exercise 4, p. 223
= 8 + 4 ! , = [1,4]

Step 1. Determine the critical number.

= 8 + 4 !

! = 4 2

2 = 4

= 2

Step 2. Evaluate () at the endpoints and at the critical numbers that are within the
closed interval. The largest value obtained is the absolute maximum, while the
smallest is the absolute minimum. (Exclude the critical numbers that are outside the
given interval).

1 = 8 + 4(1) (1)! = 11

4 = 8 + 4(4) (4)! = 8

2 = 8 + 4(2) (2)! = 12

In the given closed interval, the absolute maximum is 2 = 12 at point
(2,12) and the absolute minimum is 4 = 8 at point (4,8).
