Smederevo Region in the Second Half of 15th

and Beginning of 16th Century
The town of Smederevo, last capital of the medieval Serbia during the reign of
despot Djuradj Brankovic and his heirs (14301439, 14441459) became after
the Ottoman conquest of the Serbian state the first administrative center
of the Smederevo sanjak (from 1459 until the fall of Belgrade). One of the
districts (nahija) of this sanjak was the Kuevo nahija, which encompassed
the wider surroundings of Smederevo There were, according to the register
from 1476, at least 134 villages and 10 hamlets in this nahija covering the
largest part of the territory of the medieval region of Kuevo, between the
rivers Danube, Velika Morava, Jasenica and the mountains Avala and Kosmaj.
However, population density of Kuevo was not high in that time as 32.6%
of settlements had up to five houses and in only three villages (2.2%) were
over 30 houses. In the table at the end of this work are registered all village
settlements in Kuevo after Turkish registers (1476/7, 1516, 1528/30) with their
precise locations. One of the main reasons for low population density of
Kuevo is in the fact that this border area experienced military conflicts in the
final decades of the 15th and in the beginning of the 16th century including few
large attacks of Hungarian army followed by taking many tens of thousands
of inhabitants of north Serbia across the Danube (1476, 14801481, 1494,
15001502). In order to fill the territory, which was getting empty the Ottoman
authorities colonized Smederevo and neighboring sanjaks in the second half
of the 15th and the first decades of the 16th century with the stockbreeding
population of the Vlach status.
Smederevo was at that time not only the largest and most important fort
in the entire sanjak with strong military garrison but also the largest urban
settlement. There were 7 Muslim mahalas (districts) with 181 houses in Veliki grad (Large fort) in 1516 and in 3 Muslim and 8 Christian mahalas in the
suburbium lived 65 Muslim and 77 Christian complete families and even 85
widowed families and 23 Dubrovnik citizens. The fortress Kuli was constructed in 1483 on the Danube bank not far from Smederevo and after a while
the civil settlement was established around it. Before 1521 was also establis-

hed small fortification (Hisarlik) in Grocka on the Danube and towards the
Hungarian Belgrade. The trade was of great importance in the economy of
Smederevo and other border towns along the Danube where main trading
articles were the cereals, fish, cattle, vine and other foodstuffs, products of
iron, leather, the articles of clothing, textiles, wood and lumber and other
articles. The village economy in the Smederevo region was characterize in the
second half of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century by agriculture,
particularly wheat growing and wine growing.
