Chapter 8: Reading and Morphology.

Teachers who adopt a word recognition view of reading encourage students to use
phonics to help them identify words. Some words, like of and one, do not follow
phonics rules, and they are taught as sight words. To apply phonics rules to longer
words, can be done by looking for the morphemes of them.
There are difficulties in applying structural analysis of words, that`s why reading can
help students to develop a better ability to understand the meaning of words than
studying it through vocabulary. However, teachers can enhance student`s learning by
teaching general academic vocabulary and by engaging students in cognate studies.
Students can figure out the meaning of a long word recognizing if the world is made of
a prefix, a root, or a suffix, but there are variations in spelling thats made it difficult
for students to recognize the prefixes.
Students can use knowledge of word parts to recognize words, but structural analysis
is difficult because it is hard to recognize word parts, learn the meaning of the parts,
and combine the parts to determine the meaning of words.
The krashen`s Natural Order hypothesis shows that grammatical morphemes are
acquired in a fixed order that depends on the language that it`s being learned.
