EXPERIMENT I

EXPERIMENT TITLE :
Venturi Meter
OBJECTIVE :
To determine the coefficient of discharge, C
d
for Venturi Meter
APPARATUS :
Venturi Meter apparatus and stop watch

PROCEDURE :
1. The power cord was connected to the power source (switch), switch on the pump once
the power source in switch on mode.
2. The water levels inside the venturi meter tubes must be calibrated with careful until
the water reach equal heights.
3. The relieve valve was pressed to release any trapped air bubbles inside venturi tubes.
4. The inlet and outlet water valve was opened to allow the current flow thru venturi
meter and the water pressure was set at 0.3 bar.
5. The value of h
1
and h
2
was recorded
6. A stop watch was used to determined the time require (in seconds) to accumulate 10
Liters of water.
7. Step 4 until 6 was repeated with difference value of water pressure 0.5 bar and 0.7 bar
without interrupt the previous setting.
8. The pump was switched off once the experiment done, all the accumulate water was
released into reservoir tank.
9. Disconnected the power cord from power source.

QUESTIONS :
1. Plot a graph of _h against Q
2. Plot a graph of C
d
against Q
3. Discuss about the two graph obtained from the experiment.

4. Briefly explain 3 real world application of Bernoulli`s principle.

1. The carburettor used in many reciprocating engines contains a venturi to
create a region of low pressure to draw fuel into the carburettor and mix it thoroughly
with the incoming air. The low pressure in the throat of a venturi can be explained by
Bernoulli's Principle - in the narrow throat, the air is moving at its fastest speed and
therefore it is at its lowest pressure.
2. The velocity of a fluid can be measured using a device such as a Venturi meter
or an orifice plate, which can be placed into a pipeline to reduce t he diameter of the
flow. For a horizontal device, conservation of mass shows that for an incompressible
fluid, the reduction in diameter will cause an increase in the fluid velocity.
Subsequently Bernoulli's principle then shows that there must be a decrease in the
pressure in the reduced diameter region. This phenomenon is known as the Venturi
effect.
3. The drain rate for a tank with a hole or tap at the base can be calculated
directly from Bernoulli's equation, and is found to be proportional to the square root
of the height of the fluid in the tank
