POWER TRANSMISSION

The rotational motion has been found to be the most ideal and the simplest
means of transmission of mechanical power almost with negligible losses. The
rotational motion can be transmitted from one mechanical system to other with
the help of a certain systems known as transmission systems or drives. These
systems may be employed to drive a device directly by a prime mover or transmit
the rotational motion to various parts of a machine within itself.
The selection of particular type of drive depends on the application that is,
the amount of power transmitted, distance between the two shafts etc.
Transmission systems are classified as:
1. Belt drives
2. Rope drives
3. Chain drives
4. Gear drives
BELT DRIVES
1. Belt drives are used to transmit power from one shaft to another by means of a
thin inextensible belt running over two pulleys.
2. The arrangement consists of two pulleys mounted on two different shafts.
3. One shaft called the driving shaft receives power from the mains and transmits
it to another shaft called driven shaft.
4. The pulley mounted on the driving shaft is called driving pulley or driver while
the other pulley mounted on a shaft to which power has to be transmitted is
called the driven.
5. The belt passing over the two pulleys is kept in tension so as to avoid slip over
the pulleys.
6. This helps in transmitting power effectively from one shaft to another.
Types of belt drives are:
(1) Open belt drive
(2) Cross belt drive
