Bound to Stay Bound Book Order Justification

The funds allocated to the Katie Arnall Freeman Media Center of the Heritage School are vital
to procure the most current and worthwhile materials to enhance not only the mission of the
Heritage School but the established instructional goals. Although this particular order of $2500
worth of material for the media center only represents a fraction of the total budget, all those
selected for purchase are considered necessary for the following reasons.

Nonfiction Books:
The media center materials being proposed for purchase will help support the curriculum that
is being taught. The non-fiction books that are purchased will strengthen the subject areas that
have become limited due to recent weeding. These subject areas include religion and
biography. In particular, the middle school social studies department has requested an
updated selection of biographies because they feel that the existing books provide a slim choice
of selection. In addition, a new World Religions class was created as an elective class for
students to take. Titles have been selected to ensure that there are enough resources available
for the class.

Fiction Books:
During the spring of 2013, a survey was sent to faculty members to determine the resources
needed in the media center for the upcoming school year. According the faculty, the most
important need was for the collection to recognize that there were students that had little to
no interest in reading. To help combat that, many suggested that titles be chosen to entice
students to read. Because of this, a different survey was created and then completed by
students in their English classes to determine not only the interests of Upper School students
but to also discover if there were any particular titles that students would like to find in the
media center. The results of this survey were then used to select titles. Most students
indicated that they were interests lay within the realm of science fiction so books were
purchased that addressed this interest. About 30% of students wanted to be able to check out
the Zomb-B series by Darren Shan with 20% desiring the Chronicles of Vladimir Tod series by
Heather Brewer. One of the other areas of interest for students according to the survey was
adventure and real life. As a result, a portion of the books selected concentrated on this.
