A Detailed Lesson Plan in

PHYSICS 2

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the discussion the students should be able to:
a. define what is centripetal force;
b. identify the factors that affects the centripetal force;
c. solve for centripetal force;
d. differentiate centripetal force to centrifugal force; and
e. site some examples or applications of centripetal force and centrifugal force.
II. SUBJECT MATTER:
A. Topic: CENTRIPETAL AND CENTRIFUGAL FORCE
B. Materials:
container with water attached with a string
visual aids
C. References:

D. Science Ideas:
Centripetal force is a force applied perpendicular to the motion of an
object moving in a circular path over a period of time.
Centrifugal force is the tendency of an object following a curved path to
fly away from the center of curvature. Might be described as lack of
centripetal force.
The factors that affect the centripetal force are velocity, mass and radius,
so the formula used in determining centripetal force is:
Fc = mv

/r

A. Motivation/Review:
Good morning class!
Before we start the discussion for the day I
have here a mini challenge and this challenge
is titled spin it right. So I have here a bucket

Good morning Maam!

that is half-filled with water attached to a
string! By holding the end of the string, spin it
fast in the air without spilling the water inside
the bucket. Now who wants to take the
challenge?

So based on the demonstration, what did you
observe?

Yes, very good, why do you think is the reason
why the water did not spill out from the bucket
while they spin it fast in the air?

B. Lesson Proper:

Correct very good, it is because of the presence
of centripetal force, so what is a centripetal
force then base in your observation?

Based on the definition given, where is
centripetal force located Lets try to illustrate
the objects that had been spin in the air:

From the illustrations where do you think the
centripetal force located?

Why do you think so?

Very good!

(A student will volunteer and do the required
task.)

Maam, while the bucket is spinning the water
inside did not spill out.

Maam the water did not spilled out because of
what we call centripetal force.

Maam, Centripetal force is a force applied
perpendicular to the motion of an object
moving in a circular path over a period of time.
And its a force that directed towards the
center

Maam the centripetal force is located at the
string.

Maam because by the definition of the
centripetal force it says there that it is
perpendicular to the motion of the object just
like what we had experience in the experiment
in the circular motion before.

But just like other force, there are also factors
that affect centripetal force. So what are they?

Correct so how this three does affects the
centripetal force? So lets try and investigate
how they affect centripetal force. I need two
volunteers that will serve as our demonstrators.

Lets have first the velocity; what you think
will happen if we are going to spin the bucket
faster and faster. (the students will demonstrate
the spinning). So what can you observe?

Correct, very good! Lets have the next factor,
which is the length of the string or the radius.
Lets see what will happen if one have a
smaller length of string. (The students will
demonstrate the spinning). So what can you
observe?

Correct, very good! Lets all see then if they
differ in mass what will happen to the
centripetal force? (The students will
demonstrate the spinning). So what can you
observe?

Very good! So all in all how thus these three
factors affect the centripetal force?

Yes very good! So, how do we come up with
this equation? Simply by combining the
centripetal acceleration equation which is the
a
c
=v
2
/r and the equation for finding force
which is the F=ma. By substituting the a to the
value of centripetal acceleration we will get the
Fc = mv
2
/r in finding the centripetal force.
Lets try to solve using the given equation.

Maam they are the velocity, mass of the object
and the radius or length of the rope or string.

(Two students will volunteer to do the
demonstration)

The faster greater the velocity, the greater the
centripetal force.

The smaller the radius or the length of the
string the faster its rotation therefore the
greater the centripetal force it has.

The lesser the mass of the object the greater the
centripetal force.

The centripetal force is affected by velocity as
the square of the velocity, and affected directly
by the mass, and inversely affected by the
radius. And if we express this mathematical
form we will get Fc = mv
2
/r

A 400-g rock attached to a 1.0 m string is
whirled in a horizontal circle at the constant
speed of 10.0 m/s. neglecting the effects of
gravity, what is the centripetal force acting on
the rock?

Now using the equation, who wants to try
solving the problem on the board?

Lets go back again to the challenge. What if
the centripetal force is not enough to make the
bucket in circular motion?

Yes, you are correct but what will be the
direction of the object? Can you illustrate it on
the board?

Okay very good. In this instances where in
centripetal force is enough the object will
experience what we call centrifugal force, so
what is a centrifugal force?

Very good, that is centrifugal force but
basically centrifugal force is not a real force

(A student will volunteer in answer the
problem.)
Given:
v= 10.0m/s
r= 1.0m
m= 400 g

= 0.4 kg

find: F
c

solution: F
c
=

=
( )(

= 40 kg m/s
2
F
c
= 40 N

The bucket will fly away from the string
maam

(The student will illustrate the direction of the
object on the board)

It is the tendency of an object following a
curved path to fly away from the center of
curvature. Might be described as lack of
centripetal force.

because centrifugal force is the inertia of
motion. What else are the differences of the
two forces?

Very good! So that is all about the
centripetal force. Do you have any questions
regarding the topic?

IV. Summary/ Evaluation:

So lets sum up our learnings for today.
What is a centripetal again?

And what are the different factors affecting
centripetal force?

How does these three affects the centripetal
force?

So what is the formula for centripetal force?

Maam, its direction is opposite to the direction
of centripetal force. It is directed away from
the center.

None maam

Centripetal force is a force applied
perpendicular to the motion of an object
moving in a circular path over a period of time.

Maam they are the velocity, mass of the object
and the radius or length of the rope or string.

The centripetal force is affected by velocity as
the square of the velocity, and affected directly
by the mass, and inversely affected by the
radius.

VI. ASSIGNMENT:
In pairs you are going to create a graphic organizer on how this two differ to each
other you may add the things that we have given a while back. So the criteria in grading your
graphic organizers:
50 % content
15%creativity
10 %neatness
15%clarity
10% correctness of graphic org. used
100% total

The graphic organizer should be place in a 1/8 illustration board. Be sure to write
your name and the back of the illustration board. The said assignment should be passing on
Monday.
