Trends have always existed, but in the past decade a new set of trends has emerged by way of
the internet. From Facebook to Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, Pinterest, and Google Plus, all social
media sites, all based upon one thing, image. As of 2014 Facebook remains most frequented
social media site with 73% of its users being adults. Right behind Facebook is the photo sharing
maven that is Instagram, drawing in 57% of social media users daily. Twitter remains in the top
three with a garnering of 46% of social media users per day.
The internets emergence as we know it has captivated a younger audience, with 93% of teens
and young adults (ages 12-29) going online. The percentages of online users decline as age
ranges increase. 81 percent of adults from ages 30-49 are active internet users in contrast to the
70% of adults ages 50-64. Adults 65 or older are the smallest pool of internet users, active with
only 38%.
Whereas the demographics of Facebook consist mainly of adults, Instagram targets an audience
that mostly ranges from 12-24 with 54% of all users being in this age range. Instagram herds in
100 million users a month with 40 million photos shared a day, 1000 comments every second,
and 8,500 likes put out per second. 55% of women have an Instagram to the 45% of male users.
Of the teens that use Instagram, 58,425,492 of their photos were has tagged with the word
selfie. 20% of adults ages 18 to 25 reported to taking selfies two to three days a week. Within the
same age range group, 55% reported to taking selfies once a month and 20% reported to never
having taken a selfie.
Lurking on all these social media platforms are online bullies who spew out all sorts of verbal
abuses towards other internet users. 43% of teens online have found themselves victims of online
bullying. Of those teens, only 10 percent report it to their parents. Only 15% of parents are
aware that their children are online.

Of the teen internet users, 37% of teens send out messages to friends daily. 8% of teen
Americans use Twitter. 22% of teens use Facebook 10 times a day. 25% of users on Facebook
are below age 10. Teens have an average of 201 Facebook friends each.
Broader internet using statistics among teens include 51% of teens visiting social networking
sites, 11% send or receive tweets, 75% of teens have a social networking profile of some sort,
and 23% of teens use two or more social media sites a day. In regards to the effects of social
networking on human beings, 29% said that social media made them feel less shy, 20% said it
made them feel more confident, only 5% believe social networking leads to depression, 52% of
people believe their relationships with friends have improved as a result, and 37% says it has
increased relationships with family. Only 7 percent of teens said that they would prefer to talk to
friends via social networking as opposed to 49% who would prefer speaking with their friends in
person.
Social media is being used for more than just entertainment and communication. 69% of
Americans have a social networking profile. 93% of American businesses use social networking
to their advantage. Social media has finally overtaken porn as the internets main use. Use of
Instagram, twitter, and Facebook is rapidly increasing. Twitter though based in the United States
is increasing in use worldwide. 83% of internet users use social media to communicate with
friends. 61% use social media to share photos. 53% of social media uses use social media to post
videos. 74% of users use the internet to get news. 69% of internet users use the internet to share
news. 27% of internet users use the internet for their job.
Almost 20% of all our time is spent on social networking sites. 82% of the online population is
on social networking sites. Worldwide women spend more time on social networking sites than

men by a ratio of 6.5 to 5. Finally, 32.3% of social media users access social media sites through
their mobile devices.
