Darkness always terrifies me. I have always been terrified since I was sixteen years old. Many unpleasant things always happen in the darkness. An embarrassing incident occurred on my birthday when I was sixteen. I can still remember vividly the unlucky incident although I am eighteen now. It makes me fear doing anything in darkness. On that day, my parents decided to visit my grandmother as usual. They always visited her on Sundays. My sister and I always accompanied them to my grandmothers house. Then we would come back the next day. I was unable to go with them that day. I had to attend the Facebook Society meeting on the following day. After buying some tidbits and snacks from the Seven Eleven outlet, I rushed home to tell my parents the bad news. After a family discussion, they still planned to leave the house. I was furious but I did not protest or say anything. I have thought that they would celebrate my birthday with me instead of visiting my grandmother in Kampung Pinang Sebatang. When I had finished the dinner prepared by my mother, I went straight to the bathroom. It was already nine o'clock. I switched on the CD player. I tuned it to the maximum volume so that I could listen to the songs while I was in the bathroom. I lay down in the big bath tub. I liked to relax in the air-conditioned bathroom. "Ring ! Ring! Ring!" I picked up the telephone which was placed near the mirror in the bathroom. "Seng, we are now in Kampung Pinang Sebatang. I want to tell you that I had forgotten to turn off the iron in the basement. Go to the basement now and turn it off," said my mother.

Thinking that nobody was at home. I walked out of the bathroom without even a towel. I did not switch on the lights. I had a bad habit. I liked to walk in the darkness. For this reason, my father always scolded me. I quickly rushed to the basement. I guessed that my family had put my birthday presents in the basement. All of a sudden, "Happy Birthday," yelled dozens of people at me. Someone switched on the basement light. Everyone calmed down. I was in a daze. My parents had organized a surprised birthday party for me. How shameful I was. I ran back to my mom as fast as I could. I could hear the screaming, laughing and gossiping of the invited guests. I just wanted to leave the home and never come back again.
But I dared not do that, I did not want to hurt and upset my parents. I dressed neatly this time and went back to the basement. However, my face was still red. Since that day I have decided that I did not want to be the scorn of my relatives and friends again. I had learned the lesson. I hate darkness. I have always switched on the lights wherever I go for the past two years. I even sleep with the light on until the next morning.
