SKILL 31 Pin Site Care

EQUIPMENT DOCUMENTATION
Cotton-tipped applicators, sterile 1. Procedure and how tolerated.
Prescribed cleansing solution
2. Assessment of the pin site.
Sterile normal saline
Sterile 2 × 2 gauzes
Povidone-iodine liquid or antimicrobial ointment
Sterile cotton-tipped applicators

PROCEDURE
1. Gather equipment. Promotes organization and effi-
ciency.
2. Wash hands. Reduces transmission of microorganisms.
3. Explain procedure to child and family. Enhances cooper-
ation and participation and reduces anxiety and fear.
4. Remove old dressing and inspect skin site.
5. Dip applicators in prescribed solution and cleanse
around pin sites.
6. Rinse pin sites with normal sterile saline using sterile
cotton tipped applicators.
7. Apply povidone-iodine or antimicrobial ointment to the
pin site as prescribed or per agency policy.
8. Place new 2 × 2 dressing on pin site.
