was thought before.

In this paper and in the preceding publications by the same author (a Fulbright Award winning
researcher at Moscow State University, Dr.Sergei A. Ostroumov) a new scientific discipline, new science
was created. This new science is biochemical ecology. The author of this term and the farther of this
science, S.Ostroumov, published his fundamentally innovative book, Introduction to Biochemical
Ecology, in 1986. This book was ahead of its time. This book is still ahead of our time. The conceptually
new term proposed by this author is 'ecological chemomediators'. In the paper under review an
additional explanation of this new term is given. This term is a general name for a great many of various
natural chemical substances which are produced by organisms and convey /deliver some signal or
regulatory effect on / to other organisms. An example are pheromones. However, not only pheromones.
There are many other signals and effects that are delivered via natural chemicals. In the paper under the
review, the author discusses and explains these important considerations.
The subject of biochemical ecology - after publishing this revolutionary innovative book in 1986 -
became a new university discipline, a new lecture course in many universities worldwide. The book,
Introduction to Biochemical Ecology, was translated into two other European languages. The paper
under the review is a good continuation of the book. I predict that it will be given more and more
attention in future. I predict a new citation of this paper. I recommend it to all who are interested in
new developments in ecology and biochemistry.

Originating a method for determining the allowable loads of pollutants on aquatic higher plants and
prospects of its application

A new method of determination of a safe allowable load of contaminants on the laboratory systems
with aquatic macrophytes, under conditions of long-term iterative introduction of the pollutants into
the systems, was proposed and developed in this research paper. No such methods were known until
now. The current scientific terminology was supplemented by the authors in order to provide a detailed
classifications of various types of safe allowable loads of contaminants in biosystems, especially on
biosystems with aquatic macrophytes which improve water quality. The new method allows to do a
quantitative assessment of a safe allowable load in case of various chemical contaminants. It is the first
time that the parameters of safe loads were specified for concrete water biosystems and pollutants. The
specific example of a contaminant that was studied in this paper was the anionic surfactant (surface
active agent), sodium dodecyl sulfate.

Detoxification of toxic elements in the biosphere and improving environmental monitoring

In order to understand the natural processes of detoxification of toxic wastes and waste waters, it is
worthwhile to consider the main challenges to the current conceptualization of the types of matter in
the biosphere. To meet and respond to the challenges, the author suggested a new conceptualization
which is based on his suggestion to identify so called ex-living matter (ELM). The author discusses his
experiments (carried out together with his co-authors) which provide a solid factual foundation to this
conceptualization, as well as other data available in literature. The main functions of ELM in the
biosphere were also formulated and considered by the author. Some alternatives and variants in verbal
expression to be used as a name for the new type of matter are also included in the publication.

Heavy Metals (Copper and Cadmium) Interactions with Biomass of the Bryophyte-cyanobacteria

Using the method of atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), the concentrations of some elements (Cu,
Cd, Fe, Mn, Pb, Ni, and As ) were measured in the biomass of a bryophyte OST-1 with cyanobacteria
(Phormidium sp., Oscillatoria sp.) community after its incubation in aquatic medium with added Cu (4
mg/L) and Cd (0,01 mg/L). Fe, Mn, Pb, Ni, and As were not added to the aquatic medium. It was found
that after the incubation the concentrations of Cu and Cd increased. The concentrations of Fe, Mn, Pb,
Ni, and As in the biomass did not change in the course of the incubation of the biomass. The results
contribute to the scientific basis for developing phytoremediation.

The authors discovered the phytoremediation potential of the three previously unstudied species of
aquatic macrophytes, namely, Ludwigia repens JR Forst., Micranthemum micranthemoides (Nutt.)
Wettst., and Micranthemum umbrosum (JF Gmel.) SF Blake. The plants were exposed to a mixture of
heavy metals (Pb = 0,2 mg / L, Zn = 3 mg / L, Cu = 3 mg / L, Cd = 0,1 mg / L). Experiments of the authors
showed that in the presence of the aquatic plants, an accelerated decrease in the concentrations of all
four metals as compared to control (water systems without plants) took place. The concentrations of Pb,
Zn, Cu, Cd were measured using the method of inversion volt-amperometry. For instance, in case of
copper (Cu), after the 2-day incubation, the average concentration of this metal in the aquatic medium
of the systems with the macrophyte L. repens was only 3,7 % of the control value. In the systems with
another species, M. micranthemoides, the average concentration of copper was only 12,3% of that in
the control, in the systems with M. umbrosum, the average concentration of copper was 22,1% of the
control. Among the three species of plants, the most efficient in removing copper was L. repens. In case
of zink (Zn), the degree of removal of the metal from the aquatic medium varied greatly depending on
the species of the plant. In the water of the systems with L. repens, the average concentration of zink
was 90,5% of the control value. In the water of the systems with M. micranthemoides, the average level
of Zn was 18,4% of that in the control. In the microcosms with M. umbrosum, the average concentration
of zink in the aquatic medium was 64,6% of the control. Among the three species, the most effective in
decreasing the level of zink in the water was M. micranthemoides. As for Pb, all of the tree species of
plants contributed to efficient removal of this metal from the aquatic medium. After the incubation, the
average concentration of Pb in the microcosms with L. repens was only 8,2 % of the control value. In the
system with M. micranthemoides, the average concentration of Pb was 11,8% of that in the control. In
the microcosms with M. umbrosum, the average level of this metal was 8,8% of the control. All three
species of plants decreased the concentration of Pb in the aquatic medium by an order of magnitude.
When the concentration of cadmium (Cd) was measured, the decrease in the concentration was as
following. In the aquatic medium of the microcosms with L. repens, the average concentration of Cd was
25.3 % of the control value. In the systems with M. micranthemoides, the average level of the metal was
14,2% of that in the control. In the microcosms with M. umbrosum, the average concentration of
cadmium was the least of all the three plant species, only 10,0% of the control. Among the three species
of plants, this species, M. umbrosum, was most efficient in removing cadmium. The authors found
phytotoxicity of the studied mixture of the heavy metals to the macrophytes Micranthemum
micranthemoides, and M. umbrosum. The new data contributed to establish a data base for developing
new ecotechnology to improve water quality. Moreover, the new facts provided additional support to
the theory of the biota-dependent water self-purification that was developed by one of the co-authors
in his previous publications (Ostroumov, 2004, 2008).

Innovations in the environmental science make a contribution to the scientific grounds for economically
effective steps to achieve ecological safety and rational natural resources utilization. The article provides
the results of the investigations which can be used for working out of ecological safety issues and
sustainable nature resources utilization. A number of chemical elements which are of great importance
for high technology industry were discussed as potential environment pollutants. In the course of the
experiments there were received new data concerning the immobilization of these chemical elements
by biogenic material; the data were analyzed with the help of research literature. As a result the author
has formulated propositions for updating few concepts introduced by V.I. Vernadskiy who made
innovative contribution to environmental science. Practical application area for the results of the
investigation comprises scientific grounds for ecological safety organization in industrial production and
sustainable natural resources utilization including rare earth elements which are valuable to the modern
industry.

were analyzed and compared with new results reported in scientific literature. As a result, the author
revised and updated some concepts of V.I.Vernadsky on the biosphere. Among the new fundamental
concepts introduced by the author: an extended concept of the biogenic migration of chemical
elements, and a new typology of the main types of matter in the biosphere.

Aquatic Systems Biogenic Detritus Role in Metals and Metalloids Accumulation: Examples of Eight Heavy

The detritus role in the elements including heavy metals accumulation under the conditions of the
controlled experimental systems. Detritus that was formed over 8 months in microcosms with Viviparus
viviparus and Ceratophyllum demersum, contained As and heavy metals. Their concentrations in
detritus were determined with atomic-sorption spectrometry (ASS) and were positioned in the following
descending order (from the higher concentrations to the lower concentrations): Fe > Mn > Zn > Cu > Pb
> As > Co > Cd > Cr. If a mixture of several heavy metals had been added to the experimental microcosm
these metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Co, Cd, Cr) were observed in the detritus material residue in higher
concentration that in reference microcosm. The most distinct increase of the metals content in detritus
in the microcosms with the added metals occurred for Cd (more than 3 times exceeding of the
concentration in comparison with the reference one), Co (more than 13 times) and Cr (more than 150
times). These data confirm the proposed theory of the biota poly-functional role in water quality control
and water self-purification.

The experimental data analysis, concepts, and generalizations in this article provide the fundamental
elements of the qualitative theory of biocontrol (biological regulation, biological formation) of water
quality in a systematized form. The theory covers water self-purification in freshwater and marine
ecosystems. The theory is supported by the results of the author's experimental studies of the effects
exerted by some chemical pollutants including synthetic surfactants, detergents, and other xenobiotics
o naquatic organisms. The theory provides a basis for remediation of polluted aquatic ecosystems
including purification of water bodies and streams, and briefly present the qualitative theory of the self-
purification mechanism of aquatic ecosystems, phytoremediation and other types of technologies.

Concentrations of synthetic surfactants in waste water can exceed 30g/l. The impact of synthetic
detergents containing synthetic surfactants on sprouts of golden gram (Vigna radiata) and lentil (Lens
culinaris ) was studied in biotests. Plants delayed in growth and development during the incubation
period when the concentration of detergents Losk Automat Intensive, Dosia Color and Pemolux was of
0.5 g/l. Plants perished at a concentration of 5 g/l.

In vitro studies were carried out to investigate the potential impacts of nanoparticles of metal oxides Cu
and Fe on the synthesis of cytokines. In vitro studies of the impact of nanoparticles on the synthesis of
