Writing and Mutimedia Lesson Plan

Publishing Digitally
Project overview and description:
Overview and general description: Students have been researching and learning about animals that live
in the ocean. Students have also been writing nonfiction pieces about their discoveries. After writing a
final draft of their work, I would instruct kindergartners on how to use Microsoft Office Word and allow
them to type their final draft. After they are done typing I would instruct students how to insert a picture
via clip art to their work. I would then assist students in printing the assignment for students. Finally,
students would share their work with the class using the ELMO. Four to five students would type their
paper each day during center time. This would take approximately one week to complete.
Standards/Objectives/Resources:
Standards:

W.K.2 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which
they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.

W.K.5 With guidance and support from adults, respond to questions and suggestions from peers and add details
to strengthen writing as needed.

NETS-S-1b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression

NETS-S-2a. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of
digital environments and media
Objectives:
o Student will be able to use sounds, finger spaces, capital letters, sight words, at least three
sentences and punctuation to write.
o Students will write nonfiction piece on ocean animals.
o Students will be able to edit peer and individual work using rubric.
o Student will be able to type work with assistant using Microsoft Office Word.
o Student will be able to insert clip art into typed piece of work.
o Student will be able to share work and answer questions with peers.
Technology resources and materials:
o Microsoft Office Word
o Clip art
o Print access
o 4-5 computers for a station

Procedures:
o Motivation/engagement (NETS-T 2b): Today we are going to write about ocean animals! We have
learned about a lot of animals in the ocean. Call on students to talk about what they have learned.
Discuss the writing process i.e. 6 star writing rubric, peer editing, etc. Introduce that when students
are done I will help them to type their paper on the computer during centers.
o Developmental activity (NETS-T 2a): Students are comfortable and proficient in the writing process.
Instruction will be minimal during this part. When in centers, explicit instruction will be given to
Kindergarten students on opening Microsoft Office and creating capital letters, spaces, and
punctuation. When students are done teacher will instruct students on how to insert a picture via
clip art. After picture is chosen and inserted properly, teacher will help student to print work.
o Closure: When all students have accomplished the goal of printing papers, teacher will allow
students to present work to the class. Students will ask questions and give feedback on peers work.
o Accommodation, Modifications and Differentiations for Learners: All students are ELLs, so I would be
teaching to this group of learners already, however for students who are not proficient in the writing
process I may type the work for them as they dictate to me what I wrote. I would expect all students
to follow directions to insert clip art on topic on own.
o Extension/Enrichment: I dont believe this task would be finished early, however if students were to
finish early I would spend time teaching them how to use spell check or change the font size or type,
and add more pictures.
Instructional handout/procedures for students:
o Because of the students level, I would prefer to walk them through using the program. Most
students are unable to read or follow a list of instructions at this time. Once a student was
proficient in opening up the program, typing, and inserting clip art I would have them help
trouble shoot with other students who are having a hard time. Together students could
build skills to an even better level.
Student assessment/evaluation (NETS-T 2d):
Assessment: I will be using the 6 star writer rubric outlined above. I will also be looking to see their
ability to navigate the computer system and type the same thing they have written in their writing
journals. Lastly, because of the main objective of this lesson, using multimedia to strengthen a
written text. I would assess students based on ability to insert a picture on their own. This means
that after instructing students I would expect them to be able to search, insert, and add clip art into
their writing independently. If they were able to do so I would rank them as exceeds (4). If they were
able to do so with some assistance, I would give student meets (3) because that is the kindergarten
standard. An approaches (2), would be assigned to a student who needed step by step instructions
through of the entire process after being instructed already with assistance. Emerging (1) would be
assigned to a student unable to follow any directions or use the computer.
