TEKS: 112.18.8 (6
th
grade, Science)

Objective: Students will conduct a lab racing
different types and sizes of hot wheel cars down
a specified angle (ramp) of their making. They will
graph 3 cars, 3 times each in which to use for
scientific method and reasoning of force, motion
and energy.
Big Understanding:

-How does energy affect us daily in our lives.
-The laws of physics that play a part in driving,
sports and simple tasks we complete daily.
-Laws of motion will play a part when driving
later in life.

Assessment Evidence: Students will complete the 9 trials after building a slope and providing proof of
the angle measurement they chose. Graphing the distance from top of slope to stopping point and
following 9 trials will write up a hypothesis of a car that weighs less and a car that weighs more than
the cars they used and conclusion to trials ran.
During the trails being run teacher and TA will question students on comprehension of their lab as
they complete trials.
Opening Hook: Teacher will take approximately 5 items (hot wheel car, egg, balloon, pencil, skittle,
etc) and roll down predetermined angle to show that differences of shape and size play a part (major
part) in the force of motion and energy. As completing the introduction asking students to hypothesis
what they believe the distance each item will go and why. Discuss correct answers and wrong
answers.
Instructional Strategies/Activities: Students will complete a series of hands on labs through the
lesson content of force, motion and energy. In this lab students will learn to hypothesis and support
claims as well as to summarize claims once the lab is complete. Teacher and TA will complete Q&A
verbally with students as they conduct their labs in teams of two (both students are required to
answer questions and build off the others). Students will apply knowledge and use resources to find
answers they do not know (book, teacher/TA, peers)

Materials/Resources: Tape measure, pencil, paper, yard sticks to build ramp, book, class notes
previously taken on force, motion and energy, peer partner for lab, 3 cars per group

(CIT: manipulates, demonstration, graphs)
Grouping Patterns: Students will group using random name picking from the class box
Ending Summary/ Reflection: (2 day lab-2 hrs total)- on the 2
nd
day the last 30 minutes of class,
students will work in their 2 person group to start looking over data and rough drafting the
information into a layout for the following written assignment using scientific thesis/hypothesis for
object lighter and an object heavier. Will also summarize the data found and new knowledge gained.
Paper will be due Monday following the lab (2 pages) each student must complete their own to show
understanding of the material.
