Educators rely heavily on learning activities

that encourage elaborative studying, whereas
activities that require students to practice
retrieving and reconstructing knowledge are
used less frequently. Here, we show that
practicing retrieval produces greater gains in
meaningful learning than elaborative studying
with concept mapping.
Retrieval Practices Produces More Learning than Elaborative Studying with
Concept Mapping, Jeffrey D. Karpicke, Janell R. Blunt, Science (2011)
The advantage of retrieval practice was observed
with test questions that assessed comprehension and
required students to make inferences. The advantage
of retrieval practice occurred even when the criterial
test involved creating concept maps. Our findings
support the theory that retrieval practice enhances
learning by retrieval-specific mechanisms rather than
by elaborative study processes. Retrieval practice is
an effective tool to promote conceptual learning
about science.

Bloom found that the average student tutored one-to-
one using mastery learning techniques performed two
standard deviations better than students who learn
via conventional instructional methods. This means
the average tutored student was above 98% of the
students in the control class." Additionally, the
variation of the students' achievement changed:
"about 90% of the tutored students ... attained the
level of summative achievement reached by only the
highest 20%" of the control class.

Socrative is a smart student response system that
empowers teachers to engage their classrooms
through a series of educational exercises and games
via smartphones, laptops, and tablets.
Socrative is FREE.
Socrative is easy to use.
Socrative takes teachers 3 minutes to set up and
takes their classes 20 seconds to load.
BYOT/BYOD

Teachers login through their device and select
an activity which controls the flow of questions
and games. Students simply login with their
device and interact real time with the content.

The limit is 50 students logged in at one time.
You can have as many as youd like throughout
the day.
Student responses are visually represented for
multiple choice, true/false and Short Answer
questions. For pre-planned activities a teacher can
view reports online as a google spreadsheet or as an
emailed Excel file.
Everyone has access to Socrative. Socrative created
some tool specific apps and all web-enabled devices
are invited. Furthermore, activities can be completed
collaboratively, so it is okay if you don't have a
device for each student.
Browsers: Log in to Socrative on any internet
browser.
Apps: Work with a mix of smartphones, tablets,
and computers. Find our apps in the Google Play,
iTunes, or Windows Store.

Socrative is a team of educators and engineers
passionate about improving education. Having been
in the classroom, we understand the real challenges
facing educators in todays classrooms. In case
youre curious, our platform was designed with
pedagogical underpinnings based on the Teaching
for Understanding framework, Blooms
Taxonomy, the Socratic method and John Seely
Browns philosophy of play, questioning and
imagination.
