Setting: classroom Who you observed: 8 students Childrens age range: 4-5 year olds
FIELD NOTES 1. Describe the content of the lesson that you observed.
The students were beginning the day with reciting the days of the week, the date, counting, pledge of allegiance, and letters. The students were sitting on the rug by the calendar and they each had an assigned spot to sit on.
2. Describe the instructional strategy or strategies (e. g., cooperative learning, peer tutoring, think alouds) that were utilized in the teaching of those concepts.
The teacher would recite the lines with the students and then they would say it by themselves as a class. The students would then get called on individually to recite whatever they were told and they would get a sticker if they did it right. One person was picked to hold the flag during the pledge of allegiance and they would stand up and point the flag out while everyone sang. If any of the students aid their number, letters, sounds, etc., wrong, the teacher would stop and say it with them slowly so they could do it correctly.
3. Please describe if and how the teacher utilized the following during the lesson: models, the arts, and technology.
The teacher pointed to the calendar as the students said the days of the week and the months of the year. She also used the letter and number posters as models for when the students were counting and reciting their ABCs. Technology was used when she would play a song pertaining to whatever the students were reciting. The teacher used a radio that had a slot for cassettes and CDs and she would allow the students to come up and press play if it was their turn to recite something. The arts were incorporated when the students sang the national anthem after the pledge of allegiance.
4. Describe the assessment strategies that the teacher used to assess the content knowledge of the student. These assessments might be formative or summative.
For this particular part of the day, the teacher did not take down any formal assessments, but instead she would keep track of who missed what in her head. If one child messed up counting to 20, she would call on them after a couple of students had finished their counting so she could see if they still needed help or if they got it. The teacher went around to each student until each one had recited a couple different things.
Take notes on student engagement. Pick several students to look at over the course of the lesson.
A few of the students were rolling around on the rug and fidgeting but for the most part all of the students were paying attention to the lesson. I will choose to focus on N and B. They were complete opposites. N was very immature for his age and rarely listened to instructions. He was constantly moving around the room and was always getting in trouble for running kids over or not being quiet during instruction time. B was very mature for her age and liked to lead the other students as if she was the teacher. She would let them know when they were doing something wrong and she would correct their work. Most of the time she was right!
