Are there good reasons to believe in the existence of God

(1) Theism holds that there are good reasons for thinking that there exists a supreme
being
(2) Atheism holds that there are good reasons for thinking that there exists no supreme
being
(3) Agnosticism believes that reason cannot establish whether or not a supreme being
exists

I. Arguments for Theism
(1) A Posteriori Arguments arguments based upon empirical evidence
o (a) Argument from Religious Experience God exists because people experience
God
o (b) Cosmological Argument God provides the best explanation of why the
world exists
o (c) Design Argument Only God can account for the design and beauty of nature
(2) A priori arguments arguments based upon analyzing the concept of God
o (a) Ontological Argument to claim that God does not exist is a contradiction
o (b) Transcendental Argument God is the necessary condition for the possibility
of logic
(3) Pragmatic Arguments these claim that it is possible that God might not exist, but
that we are better off believing in God
o (a) Pascals Wager the expected utility of believing in God is infinite
II. Arguments Against Classical Theism
(1) The problem of Evil
o (a) The logical problem of evil the existence of evil makes Gods existence
logically impossible
o (b) The evidential problem of evil the existence of evil makes Gods existence
unlikely
