se%#rity %on%erns in the a&ter!ath o& the 9411 atta%ks %o!,ined (ith si3ni&i%ant i!"ro-e!ents
in di3ital %a!era te%hnolo3y ha-e res#lted in a re-italization o& resear%h in re%o3nition
syste!s. 0ne o& the &a%tors dri-in3 this re-italization is the need to e5tra%t #se&#l in&or!ation
&ro! enor!o#s -ol#!es o& data "rod#%ed ,y -ario#s sensors s#%h as se%#rity %a!eras. 6n
order to ,e e&&e%ti-e &or this and other ti!e-sensiti-e re%o3nition "ro,le!s, re%o3nition
syste!s re7#ire &ast and a%%#rate %lassi&iers. Des"ite the e!"hasis on "attern re%o3nition and
the %onsidera,le "ro3ress that has ,een !ade in !any areas s#%h as %o!"#ter -ision, o,1e%t
re%o3nition still re!ains a di&&i%#lt task &or a %o!"#ter to "er&or!. )o date, the -ast !a1ority
o& the resear%h in o,1e%t re%o3nition has &o%#sed on i!"ro-in3 the a%%#ra%y and ro,#stness o&
these syste!s. )his dissertation "ro"oses a &ra!e(ork &or ra"id o,1e%t re%o3nition. )he
%enter"ie%e o& this &ra!e(ork is a ne( %lassi&ier %alled 2a"id lassi&i%ation )ree 82)9. :

e&&e%t o& these o"erations yields a %lassi&ier that has a le-el o& a%%#ra%y on "ar (ith other
