DEFINITION
Basic Water Rescue is designed to
provide individuals.
Prevent recognize and respond to aquatic
emergencies.
BASIC SKILLS
Learn to swim well. Almost two million
people of all ages learn to swim each
year with Red Cross programs.
Know how to respond to an emergency,
(including lifesaving CPR skills), how to
tell if a swimmer is in distress or is
drowning, and how and when to call for
emergency help.


STEP TO RESCUE SOMEONE
DROWNING
Recognize that the victim is drowning.
Shout for help.
Stay calm and focused.
Tell the victim to remain calm and that you are there
to help.
Grab an object you can use to extend your reach.
Understand that this assist puts you in some danger
of drowning.

PROTECT YOU WHEN AROUND WATER
GO TOGETHER
When playing in, on or near water always make sure
someone is with you and follow the advice on this
page.
FLOAT & WAVE
If you are in trouble in the water, relax, roll on your
back and wave with one arm.
REACH TO RESCUE
If someone needs help . . . don't get in the water. Lie
down and reach out with a stick, or throw a rope.

WHEN SWIMMING
Lifeguards are there to help you.
Ask their advice about where you can safely
swim.

WHEN OUT & ABOUT
When rock fishing or fishing from the shore,
always wear proper footwear.
Beware of slippery banks and rocks.

SWIM & SURVIVE
Learn how to Swim & Survive.
Be safe and have fun in the water.

Always wear the correct safety equipment
when you are on the water.


Never push anybody into the water.
