Prior to 1972
10-20 Freshman competency
30-40 Sophomore competency
50-70 Junior competency
80-100 Senior competency
100 and above Graduate level

Current Numbering System:
The course offerings at Hope College can be classified into three main divisions: Lower
division (100-299); upper division (300-699); and graduate division (700-899).
Competency levels are reflected at the first digit and are established as follows:
009-099 - No credit courses 300-399 - Junior competency level
100-199 - Freshman competency level 400-699 - Senior competency level
200-299 - Sophomore competency level 700-899 - Graduate level

Four-digit course numbers with leading zeros indicate that these courses either have been
transferred to Hope College or have been earned in an official Hope College off-campus
program.
In most departments, the second digit is used as a sub-discipline grouping. In all
departments, the middle digit "9" refers to honors, seminar, internship, or independent study
courses. The third digit designates either semester sequence (odd - 1st semester, even -
2nd semester) or course sequence.
DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: A student is eligible to receive a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of
Music, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree if he/she has met the
following requirements: 1) has completed 126 semester hours, 2) has a minimum
cumulative grade point average of 2.0, 3) has satisfied the general education requirements,
4) has completed a major, 5) beginning with students entering in the Fall, 1978, has a
minimum average of 2.0 in the major.
