Lesson Name: Witch!

Rationale: After reading the rst 3 chapters of the novel, students will be split into prosecution
and defence where they will be given specic roles to play such as lawyers, witnesses and jury
members. Students will be given class time to begin to gather their evidence which will be
presented during the trial in lesson 4. They may bring in props or costumes in order to add
authenticity to their roles.

Prescribed Learning Outcomes:
Instructional Objective(s): Students will collaboratively work in their groups to collect evidence
for the trial.

-Clothesline, clothespins/paperclips
-Shirt cut outs
-Trial evidence handout.

Introduction:
Students will write down, on a
piece of paper in the shape of a
shirt, one part of chapter 2 that
they liked, and a comment or
question. They will hang their
item of clothing on a clothesline
that will be hung at the front of
the class. Class will go over
them, focusing on questions.

Students will write down their
question or comment on the t-
shirt. Once done, they will come
to the front and hang their shirt
on the clothesline.

Split class into prosecution and
defence. Explain trial

Give students work time for
collecting evidence

Check in with class, see how
evidence collection is going.
Answer any questions.
Explain that if theyd like they
may bring in costumes or props
to use (is there anything they

students know they may create
their own character (this is, after
all, a performance).

Extension:
Give students time to continue working, practice, or continue reading ch. 4
Adaptation: Jury members will be asked to participate in the form of giving their opinion on
why they think Ursula is guilty or not guilty (bearing in mind that theyre trying to have the
perspective of someone who has not read the book, just heard the evidence provided). This
may be easier for some students.
