IV. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The course prepares the students to assume their nursing leadership and management roles with
emphasis on their interactions with the health care team members in their respective organizations. This
course explores the different management theories, organizational behavior theories and leadership styles
that are relevant to the practice of nursing leadership and management. Additionally, the course focuses on
the development of management and leadership skills needed by nurses including planning, organizing,
communication skills, conflict management, delegation, quality management, staffing and scheduling, and
recruiting in the context of an organization.

V. COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

1) Analyze case studies utilizing principles of decision making, problem solving, and critical thinking to
explore common situations and crises in the organization.
2) Scrutinize selected leadership and management theories pertinent to the delivery of quality in healthcare
organizations.
3) Observe ethical, moral and legal principles, core values and standards of nursing care in the leadership
and management role.
4) Examine strategic and operational planning, planned change, time management, fiscal planning as a
member of the organization.
5) Identify the elements of an organizational structure and power, as well as to differentiate the types of
patient care delivery systems.
6) Identify the different aspects of staffing such as recruitment, selection, training and retention that
influence employees behavior, attitudes, and performance.
7) Explore concepts of intra and inter-professional communication and teamwork, collaboration and conflict
resolution, delegation and supervision, and workforce motivation
8) Utilize best practices for creating a positive work environment and sustaining cultures of quality and
fairness in complex healthcare delivery systems.
