The NCAA football rules committee tabled a proposal Wednesday that would have
penalized offenses for snapping the ball before 10 seconds had run off the 40-second play
clock.
After a conference call, the committee decided not to send the so-called 10-second rule
to the playing rules oversight panel for approval Thursday.

The committee was surprised by how many coaches were against the rule. About 73% of
the coaches were against this rule. This discussion may be revived next season. The rules
committee recommended the rule about 3 weeks ago. Calhoun stated that the rule was
"being made to enhance student-athlete safety by guaranteeing a small window for both
teams to substitute." Two weeks later he changed his mind saying that its only
speculative.
