Instructional objective(s):
Students will work in their class elements (3 4 students) as members
representing Ukraine, Pro-Russian separatists, Russia, European community,
the United States, and United Nations.
Each element will research cultural, economic, and political factors leading
up to the conflict from the perspective of their group.
Each element will produce an electronic presentation from their viewpoint of
the conflict.
Each element will select a representative to participate in formal peace
negotiations to formulate a proposed solution. Remaining students will role
play as journalists documenting progress.

ACTION

Before-class preparation:
Teacher will review open source news reporting electronically. The teacher will
ensure the sources come from several different agencies to ensure multiple points of
view to increase perspective understanding. The teacher will retrieve and watch
video of recent President and White House news briefings. Sources to be included
are the websites of the U.S. Government to include the White House, State
Department, CIA, and Department of Defense. Foreign news sources will be
reviewed to gain a regional perspective of the conflict. The computer lab will be
reserved.
Ukraine is attempting to become a member nation within the European
Community and this is being stalled because of Pro-Russian rebels and Russian
interference. Ukraine was under control of the Soviet Union during the Cold War
era. With the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold
War many of the former Soviet Republics are seeking greater economic ties with the
European Union. Ukraine is dependent on Russian energy to survive. The conflict
has risen to a level that an innocent commercial airliner was shot down.

MONITOR
Ongoing assessment(s):
Teacher will work around the computer lab assessing the students daily in an
informal way by briefly sitting with them to see if they are on track. The assessment
will include if they have an understanding of the conflict from their perspective and
the lesson instructional objectives. There will be a ticket out the door on one new
item/fact they learned about the conflict each day.

Accommodations and extensions:
Students with IEPs have been placed in elements to ensure success of the element.
Peer tutors assigned to the class will assist with those that need help. This lesson
plan can also be used by History classes when learning about conflict resolution.

Backup plan:
In the event of no internet connectivity the instructor will teach a lesson from the Global
Studies PPT slides and use the CPS clickers to assess student understanding real-time. If
there is no power the Global Studies text will be used and preprinted worksheets.
EVALUATE AND EXTEND
Lesson reflections and notes:
The biggest lesson reflection will come from the students as they come to a
resolution to the conflict. After the Peace talks an assessment will be attained by a
brief question and answer period by the press corps of the delegates. A rubric will
be used to assess the presentations and supporting materials. This conflict will be
revisited during classroom discussion when real-world events warrant.
