Welcome to Mr. Barbers Statistics class! I am really excited to start this new school year at
LHS and I hope that you are too!
I believe strongly in hard work and you can expect me to always give my best for you. I
expect that you also will give your best. Respect is also a very important issue and I expect that
you will respect whoever is speaking in class, whether it be a student, teacher, principal or
presenter, and give them your undivided attention.
The following sections give an outline as to what I expect in my class.
Attendance Policy
I expect you to show up on time to my class unless you have a pass or other form of
excuse from another teacher/administrator. I will close my door when the bell rings and if my
door is closed you will be assigned a 7:00 am detention on the day of my choosing (typically the
day following).
Classroom Policies
Class will typically involve reviewing homework, learning a new lesson or skill, guided
practice and individual or group practice. I will ask many questions and call for volunteers to go
to the board so please make sure that you are attentive. If absent, you will be expected to make
up the work otherwise a zero will be given. For every day absent, you will have that many days to
make up the work.
Pencil sharpening and the turning in of homework should be done before class so as not to
interrupt the class once it begins. I will generally not allow you to use the restroom during lecture
so if you need to use the restroom please go before class.
Although there are certain times throughout the day when you are allowed to use your iPod
or other mp3 player, my class is not one of those times. If your phone or iPod becomes a
distraction (to you, me, or other students) I will take it and you may stop by my room at the end
of the day to pick it up.
Grading Policies
I use a weighted grade scale with homework being worth 30 % of the nal grade and all
assessments (quizzes and tests) worth 70% of the nal grade.
Homework: I will assign homework most nights because I feel that the best way to become
procient at a skill is to practice it. For some of the assignments you will have multiple days to
work. We will go over all of the answers to the homework daily and I will spot check just to make
sure you are not just writing random numbers and letters or not doing any work at all. We will
have time to go over problems that you may have had with the homework before we begin a new
lesson. Homework points will vary from 10 to 50 points.
Assessments: The will be smaller assessments part way through larger chapters and there
will always be chapter assessments at the end of every chapter.Assessments will range from 10
points to 100 points. You will always have prior knowledge to chapter assessments, but there
could be a pop quiz for which you have no warning, stressing the importance of studying.
Projects: I think projects are a great way to show what you have learned without being in a
testing situation. There could be projects throughout the year that will count as an assessment
grade. A specic rubric will be handed out well in advance for each of these projects as I want to
give you plenty of time to make sure that you put together a quality piece of work.
Extra Credit: I am a believer in extra credit in a few instances. If you are doing all of your
work and working hard I am open to giving some. Also, if you show me work that is above and
(way) beyond what I asked you to do I could also give you some extra credit. However, I will not
give extra credit just for the fun of it. Also note that I will not give enough extra credit to
drastically change your grade. This is not fair to me or you.
If you have any questions regarding anything covered or not covered by this letter, please
do not hesitate to email me at jason.barber@london.k12.oh.us.
