Friday, July 11, 2014 Art of Social Change: Art is a movement that generation upon generations has followed. Art plays many roles in society and can reflect on issues such as science, history, religion, beliefs, and politics. Whether its songs as We Shall Overcome by Pete Seeger, which reflects on things unjust in society; or providing a visual interpretation of the effects of war. Society, as a whole, examines the art produced and has the right to approve, disapprove, acknowledge, ignore, praise and abuse it. In other words, arts impact in society plays a significant role giving individuals the opportunity to process and evaluate the product with their own beliefs and opinions. Art reflects life. It is a portrait of history, whether it is history of the current moment or an event in the past or something of the imagination. Art has captured an event, clarifying its existence and representation to society. - Grant Eckert One form of art which heavily reflects on politics is protest art. According to research, Protest art is a broad term that refers to creative works that concern or is produced by activists and social movements. There are also contemporary and historical works and currents of thought that can be characterized in this way. Social movements produce such works as the signs, banners, posters, and other printed materials used to convey a particular cause or message. Often, such art is used as part of demonstrations or acts of civil disobedience. Another form of art that has a significant impact on society is graffiti. Graffiti is often looked at as a non- educational writing that commonly involves gangs or groups. While other Graffiti Artists have began to use advertising and the media to their own benefits. Their work may be link to a type of political of social campaign, or include imagery that reflects on the normal day-to-day way of life. Overall, art has impacted and changed society. Its reflection on history, social change, beliefs, community issues, and politics play a major role in todays society. Many individuals express their beliefs on their community, personal life, and culture through art as a way of addressing issues to the public and politics.
