US Bill Of
Rights To
Show In UK
For First Time
TWO OF the most famous documents in American history the
Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence are going
on display in Britain for the first time next year.
The British Library said last month the documents, on loan
from the US, will be featured as part of an exhibition marking
the 800th anniversary of the founding document of Britains
political system, the Magna Carta.
The exhibition will provide a rare opportunity to see under
one roof all three documents symbols of liberty on both sides
of the Atlantic and beyond.
The bedrock of our modern day society is rooted in the
historic documents of the Magna Carta, Declaration of Independence, and Bill of Rights the result of brave citizens who
understood the importance of change and reform, said Tony
Marx, president of the New York Public Library.
SEPARATION
The New York library is lending the Declaration of Independence, which Thomas Jefferson copied in his own handwriting.
The Declaration established the separation of America from
Britain, and paved the way for the drafting of the American
Constitution.
The Bill of Rights, one of the 14 original copies of the document produced in 1789, is lent by the US National Archives.
Both documents could trace their influence back to the Magna
Carta. Issued in 1215 by King John, it established for the first
time that the king was subject to the law, not above it.
The exhibition, Magna Carta: Law, Liberty, Legacy, runs
from March 13 to September 1, 2015.

Big Milestone For Royal Prince

By Gregory Katz And

THE PALACE released special
pictures, the Royal Mint is striking a commemorative coin and
newspapers are publishing glowing
tributes.
Whats all the fuss about? A
little boy who will be king.
Prince George turned one year
old July 22. While he may be
too young to appreciate it, the
milestone is causing a nationwide
frenzy.
Editorial writers call him a symbol of hope, newspaper headlines
hail him as Gorgeous George
and one published a 24-page glossy
magazine chronicling his first 12
months. Prince William and his
wife Kate, who plan a small party

A Ministry of Defense spokesman

described the materials as no more dangerous than industrial chemicals and said
they were in Britain after a long operation to disable Syrias chemical weapons
capability.
Syria finished handing over its 1,300
tons of chemical stockpiles in June in an
effort to avoid US airstrikes threatened
after a chemical attack on a rebel-held
suburb near Damascus was believed to
have killed more than 1,000 people. The
chemicals are being disposed of at sites
in various countries.
Britains Royal Navy played a role in
escorting the shipments, part of an operation overseen by the Organization for the
Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

THE POUND spiked near a six-year

high against the dollar last month after a
surprisingly big increase in UK inflation
fueled expectations that the Bank of England may start raising interest rates soon,
possibly by the end of the year.
Figures from the Office for National
Statistics showed consumer prices rose by
an annual rate of 1.9 percent in June, just
below the Banks ostensible target of two
percent. Inflation, which rose from Mays
4-1/2-year low of 1.5 percent, is now at
its highest level since January.
The consensus in the markets was for
a far more modest increase of 1.6 percent
rise. The forecast-busting figures gave the
British pound a further boost to $1.7192
at one stage, its highest level since October 2008 when the global financial crisis
was in full swing. It then settled back
to trade 0.4 percent higher on the day
at $1.7151.

With the UK economy growing faster

than most other developed economies, it
is thought the Bank of England will soon
start increasing interest rates, especially if
inflationary pressures are starting to build.
The banks main rate has been at an alltime low of 0.5 percent since March 2009.
Separate figures showing that house
prices rose by a monthly rate of 0.8
percent in May also reinforced expectations that the central bank will have to
raise borrowing costs to prevent another
potentially destabilizing housing boom.
Much of the increase in the June inflation rate, he noted, was due to demand for
clothing. Usually prices fall in the summer during the traditional sales season,
but Brettell said the warm weather may
have led retailers to delay or trim reductions as consumers took to the malls.

RRScotland Yard To Hire

Londoners Only

LONDONS Metropolitan Police have

announced a new policy of hiring only
Londoners in a bid to make the police
force more representative of the population it serves.
Mayor Boris Johnson said last month
the change would allow the city to
achieve our goals more quickly.
Beginning on August 1, only candidates who have lived three of the past
six years in greater London will be able
to apply for entry-level police positions
with the force that is also known as
Scotland Yard.
Officials say the goal is to have a
police force with the cultural competencies needed in a global city with a

Scotland Welcomes The

Commonwealth To Glasgow
THE LOCH NESS Monster, tartan-clad
bagpipers and giant pieces of shortbread
took the place of footballers on the Celtic
Park pitch as the Commonwealth Games
began with a celebration of Scottish myth
ology and exports July 23.
Scotland is hosting the 20th edition of
the games for former British colonies as
its own future as part of Britain could be
coming to an end. With an independence
referendum coming on September 18, the
issue of Scotlands national identity is in
sharp focus, and organizers made light
of perceptions of the country with a selfdeprecating start to the games opened by
Queen Elizabeth II.
There was singing on whisky barrels,
the giant rubber Loch Ness Monster and a
giant haggis on the pitch during the rapid,
often chaotic Kingdom of the Scots
opening sequence. After rock star Rod
Stewart performed at the home of his
beloved football club, Scottish champion
Celtic, there was a rendition of Mull of
Kintyre from Susan Boyle, the church
volunteer whose soaring voice turned her
into an overnight reality TV star.
PARADE
But after the athletes from the 71
Commonwealth countries and territories
completed their parade onto the pitch, the
ceremony took on a somber tone as the
stadium fell silent to mark the Malaysian
Airlines crash. Around a third of the 298
victims were from the Commonwealth.
Malaysian athletes also donned black

armbands to remember their 44 compatriots who died when the jet was shot down
over Ukraine.
The games was officially opened by
the Queen after cycling great Chris Hoy,
Britains most decorated Olympian,
handed over the baton which has traveled
throughout the Commonwealth since starting a relay at Buckingham Palace last year.
The 88-year-old monarch showed her
lighter side when Hoy and Prince Tunku
Imran, president of the Commonwealth
Games Federation, struggled to retrieve
the message from the baton she left in it.
When the note was finally recovered, the
queen flashed a smile and held her arms out
aloft before revealing its contents.

face he looked angry, Gareth McCarthy told
the Daily Star. I wasnt really paying attention until I noticed a foul, but unmistakable

Another witness said the man purposefully chose the stairs as a location for his

The determined dumper was described as

and having a bald head.
The bank was closed for a short period

Trampoline In The World

A TRAMPOLINE with a difference opened in

Snowdonia, Wales last month, hundreds of
feet below the ground.
Special features include three huge trampolines that hang in the old slate cavern at
varying levels. The trampolines are reached
by train, with each linked by a 60ft long slide.
Bounce Below was originally a coal mine
and is located underground in a 100ft x 60ft
cavern. It took 4,500 hours to remove 500
tons of rubble using a similar method to when
miners brought coal to the surface.
This giant underground playground is the
first of its kind in the world and was immediately very popular.
Visitors are kitted out in special overalls
and a helmet before being let loose in the
caves to bounce, climb and slide in the most
unique setting.
The walls are covered with technicoloured lights which illuminate the subterranean background with vibrant colours,
while the LED lights also reveal the beauty
of the underground cavern.
Commercial director of Zip World and
Bounce Below, Sean Taylor, said: Weve

only underground giant trampoline. I think its
fair to say we are fast becoming the most fun

Stolen British Open Golf Cart

Hurts Guard

POLICE SAY a man was been arrested on

suspicion of assault after allegedly taking a
golf cart from the course staging the British
Open and driving it into a security guard.
The incident occurred at about at the end
of the final practice day before the tournament began last month.
Merseyside police say in a statement
e-mailed to The Associated Press that a
45-year-old man from the local area took
the golf cart from the Royal Liverpool course
and collided with the guard, who sustained
a slight leg injury.
Police say the man then steered the cart
into a barrier near an entrance to the course
in Hoylake.

Cheese Carried A Bigger Bite
For One Shopper

AN INVESTIGATION was launched by health

experts last month after a shopper at Sainsburys supermarket found a tooth in a piece
of cheese she purchased at the store.
Jane Betts found the tooth whilst shopping at a branch in Cambridge and took it to
her dentist, assuming it was her own tooth.
The 42-year-old told The Mirror: This
was extremely disturbing and even more so
as I had just been to the dentist myself the
day before.

Because of this I thought a piece of my

own dental work had come off; I was completely disgusted to find that it was in fact
someone elses. I was also very confused
for several minutes as I searched my mouth
and all my teeth looking for where the piece
had come off. Now I just feel sick. It was a
bizarre and truly horrible coincidence.
A Sainsburys spokeswoman added: We
take great pride in the quality of all the food
we sell. We have spoken to Jane and will
of course support the environmental health
officer with any investigation.

The promotional World Cup mugs depicted the US president wearing an England

but the name was Chris Smalling.
The company were left with 2,000 unsellable mugs due to Englands early exit from
the compeition. Then, realising their error,
they shipped them off to a clearance reselling

pictures of the catastrophic cups.

a meal that they say contains some of the

The companys conducted a study and
their experts researched many of the ingredients that Brits turn to for that feeling of true

The sausage macerole features a macaroni and cheese topping coated with crispy

Classic British dishes such as a Sunday

bite away the blues.
A poll of 2,000 adults by Colmans Mustard to mark its 200th anniversary found

New Law Could Let F1

Stage Race Around London
RACING drivers could roar through the streets of London in just a year under
new laws being rushed through by David Cameron.
Mayor Boris Johnson welcomed the chance for a spectacular Monaco-style Grand Prix
in the capital, potentially generating millions of pounds in fees and sponsorship.
It follows the huge success of this years
Tour de France stages in the UK, which saw
an estimated 3.5 million spectators line the
streets and boosted the economy by up to
100m.
Opening a new Formula 1 Williams factory
in Oxfordshire, Mr Cameron declared: We
are bringing British motor racing back to
British roads, to benefit local communities.
Local authorities will have powers to
suspend the Road Traffic Act, lift speed limits
and close roads.
Formula 1 Chief Executive, Bernie Ecclestone, has campaigned for a Grand Prix in
London, and drew up a potential race track
incorporating The Mall, Trafalgar Square and
Park Lane.
A spokesperson for the Mayor said noise
and air pollution resulting from racing event
would be considered carefully along with
the scope for jobs and growth.
The spokesman said: The Mayor is positive that London would do a spectacular job of
hosting an F1 Grand Prix; but it is impossible

At an event in London called to promote

said that fighters for the Islamic State of Iraq
and Syria (ISIS) were acting contrary to the
values of their religion.
They added that the extremists pose a
threat to Muslims of all denominations and
schools of thought and expressed their
outright opposition to the destruction and
killing that the Islamist fighters were inflicting
on the Iraqi and Syrian population.
They also appealed to all British Muslims
to shun extremist ideology and to resist any
attempt by extremists to lure young men and
women from this country to join the fighting.
The denunciation was delivered during a Big
Iftar event celebrating Ramadan at the Imam
Al Khoel Islamic centre in North London and
followed a similar joint message at Westminster by Sunni and Shia groups.
It follows mounting concern about the
number of British residents travelling to fight
in Syria. About 500 are estimated to have
joined the conflict so far.

Boris Island Airport Dead In

The Water, New Heathrow Boss
Pledges Fight For Third Runway

The Boris Island airport plan suffered a

potential death blow as three reports said
costs may soar billions of pounds above the
Mayors estimates.
The bill for new transport links to a Thames
Estuary airport could be more than double
predictions, said experts.
Researchers outlined huge further costs
of compensating Heathrows owners and
removing a sunken wreck full of explosives.
They also questioned the plans commercial
viability, suggesting it could lead to higher
passenger costs and business lost to competitors.
The Mayors chief aviation adviser, Daniel
Moylan, said the reports would be analysed
but he emphasised how they also highlighted
economic benefits an estuary hub would
provide.
John Holland-Kaye, new Chief Executive of
Heathrow, vowed to fight for the right to build
a third runway and claimed his expansion
plans enjoyed cross-party political support.
He also sought to repair relations with
Mayor Boris Johnson by saying they both
support the need for a hub airport for London.
He said his mission is to put an expanded
Heathrow at the centre of Britains bid to keep
pace with the global race for growth as an
issue of national importance.

Landscape Art: Walk The Line To

See World-Class Sculptures
The landscape of East London is set to
be transformed by a sculpture trail featuring
dramatic works from the likes of Damien Hirst
and Martin Creed.
Nine pieces of art have been chosen from
more than 70 submissions for the inaugural
year of The Line, an ambitious project. It is
designed to introduce visitors to world-class
art on a three-mile route along the capitals
waterways.
Planning permissions have been submitted to install sculptures including a tower of
shopping trolleys by 46-year-old Londoner
Abigail Fallis, and Sensation, a painted crosssection of an over-sized piece of skin by
Damien Hirst, which is being lent from a
private collection.
Other works on the route from the O2 to
the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will include
Vulcan, a 15ft representation of the god of file
by the late Eduardo Paolozzi, and Network,
a man with his phone, by another Londoner,
33-year-old Tom Price.
Art dealer Megan Pipers realisation that
there are hundreds of works in museums
and gallery stores and private collections that
never see the light of day was the starting
point. She worked with regeneration expert
Clive Dutton to raise 140,000 through
crowdfunding to kickstart the plans.
The sculptures, many of which have not
been seen in London before, have been
loaned for two years. Fundraising continues,
and the aim is to open in late summer or
autumn.

Owners 40k Penalty For Illegal

Extensions To Kensington Home
A man who illegally extended his house in
one of Kensingtons most exclusive streets
must pay a 40,000 penalty after a court
found the value he had added to his home
was equal to profiting from the proceeds
of crime.
Mayur Naturbhai Patel did not have planning permission for extensions to his 2.8m
home in Portland Road, within a conservation area in Holland Park. The extensions
made room for a staircase and new ensuite
bedroom and could have added hundreds
of thousands of pounds to the value of the
four-storey, four-bedroom property.
But after neighbours complained, Kensington and Chelsea council ordered them to
be taken down.
Judge Phillip Matthews said he thought
Patel had acted with the utmost stupidity
and that it was no mitigation to say he relied
on the advice of architects.
The property, bought in 2011 for 1.65m,
was advertised for auction in January with a
guide price of more than 2.7m.

COMEDY IS a bit like history. It repeats itself, and what started out as satire can mellow
into farce.
The Monty Python troupe burst forth from Britain as the 1960s became the 70s, with
a delirious blend of satire, surrealism and silliness. Almost 35 years after their last live
performance, they were reunited for 10 farewell shows at Londons O2 Arena.
Were they comic geniuses? The evidence of their July 1 opening night says yes. Should
geniuses stage affectionate send-off shows for their fans? Maybe not.
Monty Python Live (Mostly) features performances of many of their best skits, interspersed with saucy song-and-dance numbers and clips both live-action and animated
from the classic TV series Monty Pythons Flying Circus.
Like aging rock bands, the Pythons have lost a member along lifes highway Graham Chapman, who died in 1989. The five surviving Pythons are now over 70. Like the
Rolling Stones, theyre more wrinkled than you remember, but still perform with gusto.
CONTRIBUTION
Each makes a distinct contribution. Eric Idle, who assembled this event with some of
the Broadway pizazz of his hit musical Spamalot, is a crowd-pleasing showman. John
Cleese and Michael Palin still perform together with quick-fire comic timing, and crack
each other up.
The only thing missing is surprise. Its inevitable fans have waited decades for

Gandhi Statue To Stand In Parliament Square

BRITISH Foreign Secretary William
Hague has announced plans for a statue of
Indias pacifist freedom fighter Mohandas
K Gandhi to be placed in Londons Parliament Square.
The Gandhi statue would join 10 others depicting famous British and foreign
statesmen, including Winston Churchill,
Abraham Lincoln and Nelson Mandela.
The squares lawn is also a site for
demonstrations and protests next to the

countrys Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey.

Hague said during a visit to New Delhi
last month that Gandhi remains a towering
inspiration and a source of strength.
Gandhi helped lead Indias campaign of
civil disobedience to British colonial rule
until India and Pakistan gained independence in 1947. Gandhi was assassinated
months later by a radical Hindu nationalist
who objected to Gandhis vision for India.

Queen Christens Huge New UK Aircraft Carrier

ITS A HUGE aircraft carrier that is still

missing one notable element: planes.
But the slight omission failed to dampen
spirits July 4 as Queen Elizabeth II gave the
largest ever warship built for the Royal Navy
her name during a celebration in Scotland.
In a departure from the traditional shattering of a champagne bottle against the
hull, the queen pressed a button to release

a bottle of malt whisky.

The HMS Queen Elizabeth is far from
being complete, but was named as it is to
be placed in the water. When complete, it
will be equipped with the F-35B Lightning
II aircraft, a multirole fighter.
At 56 meters, the flagship is taller than
Niagra Falls and has a flight deck the size
of 60 tennis courts.

Report Finds Islamic Plot To Control UK Schools

A GOVERNMENT investigation has
found evidence that Muslim fundamentalists successfully gained control
of some schools to promote aggressive
religious values.
The report published July 22 said
some young people in schools in Birmingham, Britains second-largest city,
were encouraged to adopt an unquestioning attitude to a particular hard-line
strand of Sunni Islam.
It also criticized Birmingham City
Council for failing to alert authorities

of practices that made teachers worry

pupils were learning to be intolerant of
diversity. Investigators did not find any
evidence of violent extremism.
The investigation followed an anonymous letter that triggered several inquiries, one of which found a culture of
fear and intimidation in some of the
citys schools.
The plan was put in motion by conservative Muslims active in the school
system.

British Experts
Analysing MH17
Black Boxes
DAVID CAMERON says black boxes
from the Malaysia Airlines plane
downed in eastern Ukraine were
being examined by UK air accident
investigators.
The Prime Minister said on Twitter that British experts at the Air
Accidents Investigation Branch will
retrieve data from the flight recorders
for analysis, following a request from
the Dutch government.
The Air Accidents Investigation
Branch (AAIB) in Farnborough,
southwest of London, is looking at the
flight data recorder, which records
information from instruments on
the plane.
On July 23 AAIB experts downloaded valid data from the first
black box, the cockpit voice recorder,
which should give them hours of the
pilots conversations.
As UJ went to press, security officials in Ukraine revealed the downed
Malaysia Airlines jet suffered an explosive loss of pressure after shrapnel
from a missile punctured it. They say
the information came from the planes
flight data recorders, which were being analysed by British experts.
Ukraine officials were present at
the examination of the data recorders,
but no other announcements were
made, and Dutch officials leading the
investigation were hoping to publish
their own more detailed report later.
However, it still remains unclear
who fired a missile, with pro-Russia
rebels and Ukraine blaming each
other.

UK Enhances Airport Security

BRITAIN has authorized airport security
staff to require any traveler to turn on
electronic devices as a way to test for hidden explosives. France and Germany are
implementing similar measures, but only
for travel to and from the United States.
American intelligence officials are
worried about new al-Qaida efforts to
produce a bomb. Powering up computers
or phones allows screeners to make sure
that explosives have not been substituted
for batteries or essential components.
Travelers to and from Britain faced the
new rules from June 10. Travelers from

France to the United States began undergoing checks and the French measures were
expected to last through the summer. Germany says travelers to the United States
should expect checks, but did not specify
when they would start.
Security experts were skeptical. Michael
Boyd, who heads aviation consultancy
Boyd Group International, said would-be
terrorists will find ways to make it look as
if the device is working, for example by
calling up a family photo.
If you get good intelligence, he said,
you dont tell the other side you have it.

UK Regulator Imposes
Caps On
Payday Loans
BRITAINS financial regulator last month announced new
limitations on what payday lenders can charge their customers, the latest step in moves to tackle poor conduct in the
short-term credit industry.
The Financial Conduct Authority said last month that from
January, payday loan rates must not exceed a daily rate of 0.8
percent of the amount borrowed significantly lower than
what many lenders currently charge.
Default fees for borrowers who fail to repay on time should
be capped at 15 and customers must never have to pay back
more in fees and interest than the amount borrowed.
That means that someone struggling with repayments on
a 100 loan should never have to pay back more than 200.
Britains payday loan industry has been under intense
scrutiny amid anger over its poor regulation. Last month,
the countrys biggest payday lender, Wonga, was ordered to
pay out 2.6m to compensate tens of thousands of customers
for dishonest debt collection practices.
Last year, 1.6 million consumers in Britain took out 10
million loans, with a total value of 2.5bn.

Moore, said he would make a more traditional entrance to his seat in the stadium.
At the moment there are no plans
for me to be involved, the 86-year-old
Moore said, smiling. Sadly, I am allergic

Head Of Child Sex Abuse

Inquiry Steps Down
THE HEAD of an inquiry into allegations
of past child sex abuse high up in Britains
parliament has stepped down after criticism of her links to leading establishment
figures at the time.
Elizabeth Butler-Sloss last month resigned as chair of the inquiry following
controversy over the fact her deceased
brother Michael Havers was the governments top legal adviser in the period under scrutiny. Most of the reported incidents
happened in the 1980s.
Critics of her appointment argued that
victims would not have confidence in the
inquiry if it was led by someone so close
to the establishment.
British Prime Minister David Cameron
expressed support for Butler-Sloss, saying
the departure was her decision.

PM Promotes Women, New Faces In Cabinet Shakeup

Overstaying A Nonimmigrant Visa

May Have Serious Consequences

WITH A FEW exceptions, all non-citizens who

are lawfully authorized to live in the United
States fall into one of two categories: (1)
lawful permanent residents (those with an
immigrant visa also known as a green card)
and (2) temporary visitors who are in the
country for a specific purpose (those with a
nonimmigrant visa or who entered through
the Visa Waiver Program). One of the biggest, and most obvious, differences between
these two classifications is the amount
of time the two groups of noncitizens are
allowed to remain in the country. A permanent
resident is authorized to remain in the United
States for as long as he or she chooses. A
nonimmigrant visa holder however, is only
authorized to remain in the country for a
fixed duration of time. Unfortunately, there
can be significant consequences for people
who possess a nonimmigrant visa or entered
through the visa waiver program and stay
past their authorized period.
Generally, a person admitted for temporary residence will face two types of
consequences should immigration officials
discover the foreign national has remained
in the country beyond the authorized period.
First, a person could be placed in removal
proceedings (aka deportation proceedings).
At any time after a noncitizens permission
expires, immigration officials can initiate
removal proceedings against the foreign
national. Immigration courts are not happy
places and those in immigration proceedings
typically have a difficult time proving eligibility
to remain in the country. For example, if one
wanted to apply for cancellation of removal
(which could result in a green card), the
noncitizen would need to prove (1) he or she
has remained in the country continuously for
ten years; (2) he or she is a person of good
moral character; (3) he or she does not
have certain disqualifying convictions; and
(4) he or she has a US citizen or permanent
spouse, parent, and/or child that would face
an exceptional and extremely unusual hardship should the noncitizen be deported. In
addition to the tremendously stringent legal
standard to win, the immigration courts can
only grant 4,000 cases per year. Thus, the
chances of prevailing on these types of cases
are generally not good. If, at the conclusion of
the immigration proceedings the noncitizen is
not granted relief, he or she may be ordered
deported. An order of deportation will create
a significant barrier to being readmitted to

the country.
Second, a noncitizen that leaves the country after the period of stay in the United States
has expired may face significant challenges
when applying for readmission. Once the authorized period of stay (which is documented
on the I-94) expires, the unlawful presence
clock begins to tick. A foreign national who
overstays the unauthorized period for more
than 180 days to 365 days and leaves the
country will be subject to a three-year bar
upon attempting to reenter the United States.
Still worse, a person who overstays a visa
for more than a year will be subject to a 10year bar after departure and upon attempted
reentry. In addition to the statutory bars, a
foreign national who attempts to reenter, even
after the three/10-year bar has expired might
also face additional scrutiny with officials at
the United States Consulate abroad. Fortunately, the three/10-year bars can be avoided
if the noncitizen is married to a United States
Citizen spouse. If the citizen spouse files a
family-based immigration petition on behalf
of the noncitizen and immigration officials
agree the marriage was entered into because
of a bona fide relationship, and not for an immigration benefit, the noncitizen can qualify
for a green card. Even after accruing over a
year of unlawful presence, the newly minted
immigrant visa holder will not be subject to
a 10-year bar upon attempted reentry into
the United States.
Thus, nonimmigrant visa holders who are
admitted for a temporary purpose should
be very careful about when their authorized
period of stay in the United States expires.
However, if these noncitizens find themselves
in the United States after their authorized
period of stay has expired, it is important
to consult with an immigration attorney to
review the foreign nationals options to (1)
remain in the country and (2) avoid any
adverse immigration consequences.

PRIME MINISTER Camerons government became younger, more female and
more Euroskeptic last month as Prime
Minister David Cameron shook up his top
team ahead of an election next year.
In the biggest Cabinet shuffle since
Britains coalition government took office
in 2010, Cameron moved Philip Hammond from defense to foreign secretary.
Hammond replaces William Hague, who
surprised many by announcing he was
becoming leader of the House of Commons
and will leave Parliament next year.
Michael Fallon, formerly energy minister, was promoted to defense secretary.
Education Secretary Michael Gove,
whose school reforms have angered many
teachers, was moved to the post of chief
whip, charged with maintaining discipline
among lawmakers and promoting the governments message on TV.
Several women gained promotion,
including new Education Secretary Nicky
Morgan, Environment Secretary Liz Truss
and Tina Stowell, new leader of the House
of Lords.
The changes bring the number of female
ministers to eight, among the 33 who at-

tend Cabinet meetings. Cameron has

been accused of packing his government
with middle-aged, privately educated
white men like himself.
CENTRISTS
Casualties of the cull included prominent centrists such as Hague, Attorney
General Dominic Grieve and Kenneth
Clarke, a pro-European Conservative
who has served in government posts
since the 1970s.
Critics accused Cameron of moving
his government to the right. The opposition Labour Party branded the shuffle
the massacre of the moderates.

R&A To Meet Over

Proxy Decision On
Womens Vote

By Dennis Passa
THE ROYAL & Ancient Golf Club held a
business meeting last month to determine
whether to allow club members to vote
by proxy for its historic September vote
to have female members.
Club rules require members to be
present to vote but R&A secretary Peter
Dawson said last month at Royal Liverpool
that its clear that the majority of R&A
members feel that postal voting would
be appropriate in this case. The rules of
the club do not cater for postal voting
and, therefore, those rules would have to
be changed for a postal vote to be held
legitimately.
Dawson announced in April that the
R&A would vote September 18 whether
to allow female members for the first time
in its 260-year history. The club has
about 2,400 members
around the world,
meaning the issue
could be decided by
only a few hundred
members who live
near the club if the
rules arent changed.

With an election due in May 2015,

Cameron is eager to neutralize the threat
from the United Kingdom Independence
Party, which has been wooing Tory voters with its call for Britain to leave the
European Union.
Cameron supports staying in if the bloc
concedes changes that Britain wants, but
has promised to hold a referendum on EU
membership in 2017.
Cameron also announced his choice as
Britains representative on the European
Commission. He chose Jonathan Hill, a
former PR executive who was appointed
to the House of Lords in 2010.

Judge: IRA Fugitive Letters Flawed, Not Illegal

A GOVERNMENT policy of
issuing letters assuring Irish Republican Army fugitives they werent
wanted by police was flawed, but
didnt give criminals a get out of
jail free card, a British judge said
last month.
Justice Heather Hallett said the
contentious comfort letters, a
little-known offshoot of the Northern Ireland peace process, did not
amount to an amnesty.
The letters came to light after the
arrest of John Downey, who was
charged with a 1982 bomb attack
that killed four soldiers and seven
horses in Londons Hyde Park. His

trial collapsed in February after

Downey revealed he had been sent
a letter in 2007 telling him mistakenly that he wasnt wanted.
Amid a public uproar, the government appointed Hallett to investigate the policy.
The letters were an offshoot of
the 1998 Good Friday agreement,
which ended 30 years of bloodshed
in Northern Ireland. It allowed for
the early release of paramilitary
prisoners, but left a question mark
over hundreds who had fled, mostly
to the Irish Republic.
The letters were quietly sent out
starting in 2000 as a way of clarify-

ing the status of the on the runs,

or OTRs.
About 190 fugitives were sent
letters informing them they werent
being sought by police over outstanding crimes. Others had requests for such assurances turned
down.
Hallett found two cases in addition to Downeys in which letters
had been sent in error to people who
were in fact wanted.
Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers told the House of Commons last month that as far as this
government is concerned, the OTR
scheme is over.

If Only Life Was Neat

CAN YOU imagine living in a soap opera?

All around you, scandals are developing.
Deceit, dishonesty, arguments and mistrust
are the norm. Black is white, and everything
is black and white.
Well, living in Britain today feels much
like that.
Weve seen Sir Jimmy Savile utterly
demonised. To be honest I have never
met anyone who liked him: he was always
regarded as weird but the Establishment fell
for him devoting his time as he did to charity.
Apparently.
Now it seems he spent most of his life
pursuing his paedophiliac and necrophiliac
hobbies in a range of respectable addresses,
such as the BBC, Leeds General and Broadmoor Hospital. So far about 300 people have
come forward with accounts of sexual abuse
perpetrated by him..
Cyril Smith was another whose life was
distinguished with a knighthood awarded
on the recommendation of Sir David Steel,
Liberal leader in 1988 and who should have
been behind bars well before he died. He was
probably the heaviest MP of all time, standing
62 and a shade under 30 stones. So far,
144 people have come forward to complain
of the weight of his sexual abuse, mainly with
under-age boys. He shuffled off his immoral
coil in September 2010.
Others didnt manage to die quickly
enough and have seen their misdemeanours
come back to haunt them in old age.
Octogenarian Stuart Hall for one, the
broadcaster. Another lovable and highly
decorated villain. He spent his
career hosting rubbish such as Its
a Knockout, culminating in a right
royal load of tripe in June 1987
The Grand Knockout Tournament
which featured Prince Edward,
Princess Anne and the Duke and
Duchess of York supervising
celebrities dressed up as giant
vegetables acting as targets for
fake hams.
Halls infectious laughter made
him an instant national treasure which he
remained till last June when he was sent
down for sexual abuse of girls, forfeiting both
his freedom and the OBE he had picked up
for his contributions to the national gaiety.
In May of this year another well-known
figure who had spent much of his adult life
publicising the sins of the famous also ran
into the brick wall of British justice. This
was Max Clifford, the celebrity publicist now
serving eight years for a range of sex attacks
on women who fell victims to his power. His
celebrity status put him above the law and
criticism for the last thirty years, so he felt
able to offer his contacts to attractive women
in exchange for sexual favours.
The latest celebrity to face his nemesis in
court was the veteran entertainer, Rolf Harris.
The Australian artist and showman had a full
hand of British Empire Medals the M, O
and C to accompany his AO (Officer of the
Order of Australia), all doubtless to signal his
contribution to charity. Like Stuart Hall, Max
Clifford and Jimmy Savile, Harris had spent
many years privately indulging his sexual
predilection for girls. He will be occupied for
at least the next three years in jug, serving a
six-year sentence.
At the age of 84, he is entitled to a free
television and 8 a week pension. He spent
the first month in Wandsworth and has now
been transferred to the Savoy of Slammers,
Leyhill Open prison for the remainder of his
sentence.

also behave like soap opera characters.

North of the Border we have Alex Salmond
whipping up enthusiasm for full Scottish independence. He has succeeded in lowering the
voting age in the September 18 referendum to
16 on the basis that younger voters will have
more years of independence ahead of them
than older ones. The logic of this measure
defeats me: why stop at 16, why not give
the vote to every child? Whilst were at it,
we may as well enfranchise unborn children
since they will have longest.
David Cameron gave the referendum
the go-ahead in October 2012 to
settle, he hoped, the vexed question of Scottish independence
once and for all. His problem has
remained unchanged ever since:
the Conservative Party is widely
detested in Scotland. They have
only one Westminster MP and
their popular support north of the
border is precisely nil: in May of
this year, the Conservative annual
Scottish youth conference was
cancelled due to lack of interest after only
12 tickets were sold.
Quite sensibly Cameron will not enter into
an open debate with Salmond. This he has left
(delegated?) to the leader of the Scottish No
Thanks campaign, the veteran Labour politician Alistair Darling. At least Darling has the
merit of being a Scot but he no longer features
even in his Labour Party. Despite having been
Chancellor of the Exchequer under Gordon
Brown and predicting the worst recession
in 60 years, he has cut a largely anonymous
figure since leaving office four years ago.
Scottish rejection of independence was
always regarded as a foregone conclusion.
Cameron agreed to the referendum as he was
convinced Salmond could not win the vote.
It still looks as though Scotland will say no
to independence but the margin between the
two sides is by no means wide. The fact that
Salmond can portray Cameron as a villain is
part of the soap opera mentality.
As is Camerons attitude to Europe and the
vexed question of an In/Out EU referendum.
There is little doubt that he does not want to
leave the European Union but his sceptical
backbenchers and the phenomenon that is
UKIP are forcing his hand. His recent objections to Jean-Claude Juncker becoming European Commission President were rebuffed
by all other EU members bar Hungary.
That Cameron lost this battle strengthened the eurosceptic mood. It has also made
it less likely than ever that he will be able to
secure concessions that will show we have

regained lost powers from Europe. Whatever

they are. No-one seems to know what we
have to get back to make membership of
the EU more acceptable to voters in an In/
Out referendum.
And thats probably the worst thing of
all. We live in the soap opera world where
everything is either right or wrong; there are
no nuances any more. But many celebrities
are worthy, talented and do much good work.
No-one can ever know whether Scottish
independence is right or wrong. Nobody can
ever be sure what we lose to the European
Union or how much we gain.
I came across an interesting fact the other
day: there were 10,944 casualties on the last
morning of the First World War, more than
on the D-Day landing in 1944. The reason
the fighting was so fierce was to ensure
that the Allies recaptured Mons which was
where the war had started in August 1914.
And of course the ceasefire was scheduled
for the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of
the eleventh month? Why didnt they stop
firing at 9 oclock?
People love symmetry and symbolism
since they appear to stand for some kind
of truth. In reality, we should all be content
with messiness and learn to accept that there
is never a simple truth about celebrities or
politicians.

UK Museum Looks At Epic,

Intimate Sides Of WWI

By Jill Lawless
ITS AN iconic scene of Britain at war:
Thousands of Londoners huddled in
Underground stations as German bombs
rained down.
But this is not the 1940s Blitz its
World War I, more than 20 years earlier.
For most people, the Great War evokes
images of mud, gas masks and the trenches
of the Western Front. The Imperial War
Museum wants to expand that view. A
century after the conflict began, the London
museum aims to provide a new perspective
on the war to end all wars.
Senior historian Terry Charman said
last month that many people are surprised
to learn that London was bombed first by
zeppelins, then by planes and that 300,000
people sought shelter in subway stations.
They say: Air raids? Really? Charman said. I think we see the First World
War very much through the prism of the
trenches of the Western Front. You forget
that there was a home front.
Reclaiming stories of the home front is
one of the missions of the museum, which
reopens last month after a six-month closure
for a 40m renovation.
FOUNDED
The museum was founded in 1917, as
the war still raged, to preserve the stories of
those who were fighting and dying. It retains
that goal, as well as its Imperial moniker,
a relic of a vanished British Empire.
In other ways the museum has modernized. It now covers recent conflicts,
including those in Iraq and Afghanistan,
and includes an impressive collection of
old and new military hardware. From the
ceiling of the buildings new atrium hang
a Spitfire fighter plane, a Harrier jump jet,
a V1 rocket and more.
But the museums curators are just as
interested in human stories. The World War
I galleries move from the battlefront to the
home front, to show how the first total war
shook society from top to bottom.
The permanent exhibition includes more
than 1,300 objects from weapons and uniforms to diaries and letters and alternates
between the big picture and small details.
Both perspectives have emotional power.

Its hard not to be humbled by the sheer

scale of the slaughter. After war was declared in August 1914 with Germany and
Austria-Hungary on one side and Britain,
France and Russia on the other seven million men marched off to war. By December,
one million of them were dead.
TRAGEDY
Multimedia displays capture the vast
tragedy of the Battle of the Somme, which
saw 20,000 British soldiers killed in one
day. Visitors learn about tanks, planes
and other technological innovations that
changed the course of the war. They share
space with crude weapons that suggest the
almost medieval savagery of trench warfare,
including catapults to fling grenades and an
iron-headed club for crushing skulls.
Many visitors will find the small, personal items especially moving. Soldiers
complain of boredom, rats, lice and cold in
letters home from the trenches. The wallet
of a soldier killed in battle holds faded
photos of his wife and children.
Most of the displays show the war from
the perspective of Britain, its empire and its
allies including the United States, which
entered the conflict in 1917. But senior curator Paul Cornish said that for him the most
evocative object was a frying pan bearing
a German patriotic message: The German
housewife sacrifices copper for iron. Copper was a prized war material.
SCARCE
She wouldnt have had much to put in
it, Cornish said. Meat, eggs and fat all grew
scarce as Britain tried to starve Germany
into submission.
This was a highly advanced society
reduced to beggary by the total nature of
the war, Cornish said.
All the words seen and heard in the

UK Court Orders
Glee Name Change
In Legal Row
GLUM NEWS for the TV show Glee
Britains High Court ruled last month that
the musical show must change its name
because it breaches the trademark of a
chain of comedy clubs.
A judge told Twentieth Century Fox
that it had to re-name the series in Britain,
though the order wont take effect until an
appeal has been heard.
The studio was sued by Comic Enterprises, which operates a string of venues
called The Glee Club.
Judge Roger Wyand ruled in favor of
Comic Enterprises in February, saying
there was a likelihood of confusion
between the two brands.
Fox said it would appeal, and argued
that ordering a name change would be
unnecessary, unfair and disproportionate.
But the judge concluded that Glee
had to go.
I find it hard to believe that the cost of
the re-titling and publicizing of the new
name would be so prohibitive compared
to the value of the series, he said. I was
told many times during the course of the
trial how this series is a blockbuster.
The judge said it was possible the Court
of Appeal would take a different view, so
he put the re-naming order on hold until
appeal judges have analyzed the case.
Comic Enterprises is also seeking
damages. The judge said the final amount
would be determined later, but ordered
Twentieth Century Fox to make an interim
payment of 100,000.

Trip Leader
Recounts Fatal
Polar Bear Attack
A BRITISH expedition leader has told a
coroners inquest how he tried to gouge a
polar bears eyes to stop it attacking teenagers on an Arctic adventure trip.
Michael Reid recounted the attack
last month at an inquest into the death of
17-year-old Horatio Chapple, who was
mauled as he slept in a tent.
Four others were injured in the 2011
attack in Norways Svalbard archipelago.
Reid told the inquest in Salisbury, that
he tried to shoot the bear, but his rifle did
not go off.
Reid said the bear then attacked him,
and I thought the weakest part is the eyes
so I tried to take out the eyes with my
fingers, but was unsuccessful.
Reid grabbed the gun again. This time
it fired, killing the bear.

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

Another Opportunity But
The IRS Sets The Terms!
MY REGULAR readers (and there are one
or two, and none of them is my mother!)
will know Ive written previously about the
programs the IRS has run to encourage
taxpayers to declare foreign income on
their tax returns and file Foreign Bank
Account Reports (FBARs). The current
standard program, set up in 2012, requires
a taxpayer to file amended returns and
FBARs going back eight years. Immediately you can see this is both expensive
in professional fees and challenging,
unless youre a hoarder! Add to this the
27.5 percent penalty the IRS charge on
the highest annual capital balance over the
eight years, and we can understand why it
hasnt been as popular as the IRS hoped!
This is a program for taxpayers who
genuinely risk criminal prosecution and for
whom any level of civil financial penalty is
a price worth paying.
The IRS came under pressure from
US citizens living overseas to offer a less
onerous alternative and in June 2012,
they introduced a streamlined procedure.
(Personally Ive never been able to understand why their non-filing is less culpable
than anyone elses, other, of course, than
the fact they have a US vote!) This new
procedure was available for people living
outside the US who hadnt filed US returns
at all and who were considered to be lowrisk in compliance terms.
If you qualified, tax returns and FBARs
for only three years were required, and
there was no penalty at all. Compared
to the 27.5 percent under the standard
program, this was a very good deal!
Until this year, there was nothing similar
for people living here. In June the IRS
announced changes to this procedure,
including making it available to US residents. The risk assessment has gone, but
all applicants must self-certify that their
failure to pay tax on the foreign income and
report their foreign accounts and assets
was not wilful.
Although taxpayers living outside the

US will have no liability to penalties, those

living here have to pay a penalty of five
percent of the highest total value of their
unreported foreign assets for the three
years under consideration, in addition to
any tax and interest due.
At first glance, this looks like a good
deal the IRS have recognized the higher
penalty is unreasonable for many people
in the program and if they opt-out an IRS
agent has to spend more time resolving a
case. Theyve taken the view that a lower
financial penalty will bring taxpayers in
and get them some money as well!
Heres the difficulty the five percent
has to be paid upfront and is non-negotiable. Many people (and Im one of them)
really cant see why any penalty is due
to the IRS on funds established before a
taxpayer became a US taxpayer. If a greataunt left you 100,000 which you kept in
the UK, not knowing it must be declared
here, are the IRS really entitled to 5,000
of it? (Great-aunt is turning in her grave!)
And theres another thing the Treasury
regulations provide for the first penalty
for non-compliance with FBAR filing to
be receipt of a naughty letter (not quite
how they put it!). Basically if your failure
to file is not wilful, and they are sure you
will be compliant in coming years, this is
the recommended penalty. Which makes
five percent not quite such a good deal!
One repercussion of this reduced
penalty may be the IRS becoming tougher
on people making soft filings, when
amended returns and payment are sent to
the IRS discreetly, without joining any specific program. I feel sure the IRS reviewed
these cases, before instituting enquiries or
transferring the case to a program. They
may be less generous with these decisions
in the future. The main aim of getting
taxpayers compliant is now combined
with getting money into the US Treasury!

Threat Of Housing Bubble

Pushes Britain To Act

I SUPPOSE most every reader here had their

thoughts entirely focused on the World Cup
during that exciting month, I certainly had.
But, besides the World Cup and also the
England v Sri Lanka Test matches, there is
another sporting event that took place the
2014 Le Mans 24 hour motor car endurance
race. By the time you UJ fans have read this
the results will be in and the race will be over.
I do look forward to watching the Le Mans
race every year on TV. This 91-year-old racing event around the Circuit de la Sarth in Le
Mans, France, is one of most spectacular
racing events on the year. One can watch
the race from afternoon to late evening on the
first day, then hit the sack, wake up the next
morning and continue watching the next day.
Unlike myself though, the Le Mans Teams
and drivers have no such rest and relaxation
as they have been hard at it through the entire
night and yet still have a long way to go.
With the World Cup being on I missed a
good part of this years race as I was more
focused on Englands attempt to lift the
trophy. I was disappointed though, as usual,
with the Englands football and efforts, but not
so with the Le Mans 24 hour race.
There are four classes in the race which
means there are four winners. LM-P1 category which is the top category, this is for the Le
Mans prototype cars either Gasoline or Diesel
powered cars with professional drivers. LMP2 category is the second category; these
cars are similar to the first category except
with a lower fuel capacity and a cost restriction on engine and chassis expenditures. This
class must also have at least one of the three
drivers of gentleman standing (amateur).

LeMans 1923 Chenard et Walcker Sport

The third category is the LM-GTE Pro class;
this is dominated by the worlds top sports
car brands. The connection between performance on the track and the street has never
been more real. This is my favorite class
and over the years it has not been unusual
for this class to win overall as they normally
have fewer mechanical problems over the
24 hours. The fourth and final class is the
LM-GTE Am category, these car are similar
to the previous class but must be at least one
year old so as not to benefit from the latest
technical evolutions thus keeping the cost
down. They also must have all three drivers
of amateur standing or gentleman standing
as they refer to it at Le Mans.
Ever since 1923, Le Mans has never
closed the door to participation from gentleman drivers. Since 2011, there is now this
category reserved for their participation.
Whilst speed is important at Le Mans,
covering the most distance in the 24 hours,
reliability is also a major factor. For any car
that can endure 24 hours of non-stop racing
is in itself a major accomplishment. With
todays technology, completing 24 hours of
racing is a lot easier than it was in years past
when only a handful of the entrants were able
to last the course.
There are 50 cars that start the race and
this year most of them lasted the distance.

The LM-P1 class Porsches were heavily

tipped for success this year after not competing there for several years but they were
undone by reliability issues so it was again
the LM-P1diesel powered Audis that took the
overall top two spots. In the LM-P2 category
it was Nissan that took the first five places
of their class and fourth-through-eighth
overall. My favorite, the LM-GTE Pro class
was won by Ferrari this year, with Chevrolet
and Porsche coming in second and third
respectively. A surprise result, for me was the
LM-GTE Am winner, it was a good old British
Aston Martin Vantage that came in first in that
class driven by Poulsen, Heinemeier & Thiim
so my congratulations to them. Ive always
thought highly of The Aston Martin, so it was
nice to see them succeed at Le Mans. Overall
it was a good race this year at Le Mans, one
of the best for some time.
As for the Formula 1 season, where the
cost of these machines would put the Le
Mans cars to shame, we are now coming
up to about the halfway point in the season.
The Mercedes team are dominating the
events this year mostly due to their new
6-cylinder engine design. All cars competing in F1 this season must use a 1.6-litre V6
engine, as opposed to last seasons V8s,
and it seems that the Mercedes engine this
season is out-performing all the others. This
of course is coupled with a superior chassis
design for the British based Mercedes team
making this team stand out from the rest of
the field. This engine is made in Brixworth,
Nottinghamshire by a company formerly
called Ilmor Engineering but due to their past
successes was purchased by Mercedes. It
is British made though as is the rest of the
Mercedes F1 car. Louis Hamilton is a driver
for them along with Nico Rosberg. After
winning the British Grand Prix at Silverstone,
Louis Hamilton is now only four points behind
leader Rosberg and is now the favorite to win
this seasons championship. Hamilton had
a couple of breakdowns in the earlier races
that set him behind his team mate but I think
Louis might make amends now and take the
championship. Anyway heres wishing him
well for the remaining races, its time for
another British F1 champion. The Austrian
Red Bull team has been dominant the last few
seasons but not anymore, now it is the British
based Mercedes Team that will succeed this
year, so heres wishing them well.
Happy Motoring

CAN BRITAIN avoid bubble trouble in its economy?
Concerns are mounting that the countrys housing market is overinflated, with
London house prices rising almost 19 percent in 12 months. Experts fear it is
fueled by debt and the market might pop and come crashing down, as it did in
the US during the financial crisis, dragging the country into recession and leaving
millions of homeowners with properties that are worth less than their mortgages.
In an attempt to avoid such a scenario, the Bank of England last month announced measures to tighten credit and cool off the sector. The move is of interest
globally, as it will show how much a major central bank can keep a specific sector
from overheating in an economy that is otherwise still recovering.
SURGE
Bank of England Governor Mark Carney said that while he did not see a bubble
in the property market now, the recent surge in prices warranted preventive action.
This is the limit of our tolerance, Carney said after a meeting of a Bank
of England committee created to prevent a repeat of the recent financial crisis.
PricedOut, a group that campaigns for affordable house prices, says people
with steady but modest jobs nurses, teachers and engineers have little hope
of buying a home, especially in the south. In Oxford, Britains least affordable
city, the average house price at about 340,000 costs 11 times gross average
earnings, according to the Lloyds Bank Affordable Cities Review.

Luxury Rolls-Royce Car

Sales Soar Worldwide
SALES OF luxury Rolls-Royce cars,
which cost hundreds of thousands of
dollars, soared all around the world
during the first half of the year, even in
Europe which is recovering slowly from
recession.
The Britain-based manufacturer said
last month that global sales were up 33
percent compared with the same period
in 2013.
Growth was strongest in Europe, up
over 60 percent. That increase came in
spite of fairly muted economic growth
across many parts of the continent,
where a number of countries remain

burdened by high levels of government

and household debt.
Across the Asia Pacific region, sales
spiked by almost 40 percent. Middle East
sales were also strong, up 30 percent,
while the United States and China also
saw double-digit sales growth.
The company said it sold 1,968 cars
in the first half of this year, compared
to 1,475 in the same period last year. In
the whole of 2013, it sold a total of 3,630.
Meanwhile, Rolls-Royces parent
company, Germanys BMW, said it saw
vehicles sales rise across the group by
almost seven percent during the period.

WELL HERE we are in the midst of summer,

but nowhere can it be said that anything is
normal any more with such a strange
weather patterns all over the world. Of
course being in Florida, we have summer
almost year-round, but some January/February winters we have had frost and even
saw snow once of course it all was gone
in a short time. I have paid my dues though,
struggling through 20 Wisconsin winters!!
Salads are popular in the summer,
though raw vegetables werent very popular
at first, however the Romans are known to
have started with them, theorizing that the
raw lettuce etc would line their stomachs
so they could drink more!!
Raw leaves and herbs were eaten in
the 14th century usually with olive oil and
vinegar, then slipped out of favour until the
1600s, when they were mainly thought to
be best used for health reasons. Salads can
be served before or accompanying a meal,
or in some countries even after an entree.
I still will make an English style salad with
lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, cooked cold
potatoes, beetroot, boiled eggs, sometimes
salmon, or tuna, cheese, etc, and I will readily admit I just love Heinz Salad Cream!!! I
was overwhelmed when I first came to the

2 tsp juice and zest of 1/2 lime
1 Bibb lettuce leaves pulled apart
1 ripe mango, peeled and sliced
1/2 red onion finely sliced (optional)
2 tsp toasted sesame seeds
States, where we had a choice of salad
(Green, Caesar, Iceberg with blue cheese,
Spring Salad etc) and then a choice of salad
dressings (Blue Cheese, Ranch, Russian,
Italian etc) It got to be quite confusing, however although all the choices are still there
I have learned to streamline what I want.

This months recipe will involve cooking the chicken in an oven, but I find in the
summer and indeed when just cooking for
myself, I use my toaster/convection oven so
I dont heat up all the kitchen. My favourite
lettuce for this recipe and for when I do
an English salad plate, I love to use the
Bibb lettuce, small, sweet leaves with a bit
of crunch, they are so good. Now usually
found in the organic areas of the supermarkets a bit pricey but worth it. I get so tired

time. Mangoes are more available than they
used to be I remember one visit we made

years ago when we lived in Wisconsin, and

Calling Dame Judi: UK

Needs New MI6 Spy Chief
WANTED: Spymaster. Discretion an
asset.
Britains MI6 intelligence agency announced last month that director John
Sawers will leave in November at the end
of his five-year term.
It said the recruitment process for his
successor would begin soon.
MI6, also known as the Secret Intelligence Service, is Britains foreign intelligence agency. Its most famous boss is the
fictional M in the James Bond stories, Judi
Dench although the real-life MI6 chief
is known as C.
MI6 said Sawers a former diplomat
who advised Prime Minister Tony Blair on
foreign policy had done an exceptional
job as Chief of the Secret Intelligence
Service. It did not elaborate.

Until the 1990s, the identity of the MI6

chief was kept secret. Sawers brought an
unprecedented openness to the job, delivering speeches and appearing at televised
parliamentary hearings.
His 2009 appointment brought allegations of a security lapse when his wife
posted photos of the master spy in his bathing suit on a beach, along with personal
information, on Facebook.
Then-Foreign Secretary David Miliband
dismissed fears of a security breach, saying: Its not a state secret that he wears
Speedo swimming trunks.
Sawers successor will lead an agency
under increasing criticism in the wake
of revelations by the anti-secrecy group
WikiLeaks and by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.

Dolly Parton Thrills Crowd

Americans Aplenty As UKs

Booker Prize Goes Global

DOLLY PARTON has won over legions

of hard rock fans at Englands Glastonbury
Festival, one of the biggest events on the
summer calendar.
The country legend played many of
her hits to a crowd estimated at 150,000
people in her first ever performance at the
often muddy festival at Worthy Farm in
southwest England.
Parton told the crowd at last months
show that she had been waiting her entire lifetime for a chance to perform at
Glastonbury. She penned and performed
a special song about mud to mark the occasion, even though the day proved mostly
sunny and fair.
The Rolling Stones, Jay-Z, James
Brown and other influential bands have
performed at Glastonbury over the years.

FIVE US-based writers are on the 13-book

long-list for the prestigious Booker literary
literary prize.
Announced last month, the list includes
Americans Joshua Ferris, Karen Joy Fowler,
Siri Hustvedt and Richard Powers, as well as
Irish-American writer Joseph ONeill.
Also on the list are Britains Howard Jacobson, Neel Mukherjee, Paul Kingsnorth, David
Mitchell, David Nicholls and Ali Smith, Irelands
Niall Williams and Australias Richard Flanagan.
This is the first year writers of all nationalities
have been eligible for the Booker, previously
open only to authors from Britain, Ireland and

RRThis paper reaches the British community in all parts of Florida and, of course, the US
(954) 537-6011 has recently opened,
owned by British life partners Kevin Ashdown and Craig Ashdown. We were the
first gay couple to get wed in the UK after it
became legal, Kevin told me. Pop in and let
the lads brew you a real English cuppa and
enjoy the elegant ambiance of their tearoom.
Plenty of UK imports and items on sale too.
ITS ALWAYS noteworthy when we Florida
Brits get a new leader! In the 22 years
since founding the British Bureau of Florida I have dealt directly with every British
Consul based in the states Consular HQ
in downtown Miami, attending many of the
same British events in Palm Beach, Broward
and Miami. In chronological order: Philip
Brice, Robin Hoffman, Robin Baylis, Simon
Davey, Keith Allan, Kevin McGurgan and
now our latest British Consul-General David
Prodger, who takes office early this month.
Each had a different style and manner. Rob
Hoffman married in Miami during his time
here which several of us Brits attended and
was featured in this column. Lets say a
fond farewell to Kevin McGurgan, who has
been promoted to Director-General of UK
Trade & Investment for Canada plus Consul
General of Toronto. A Scotsman who will
find many Canadian Scots, he served as
Consul General in the Sunshine State since
2010, raising the profile of British excellence
and expanding the Consulates presence in
Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. He often wore his kilt to Florida formal
occasions, quite magnificently I thought.
Our new British
Consul General Miami
served in a number of
roles, both home and
overseas, within the
Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO)
since joining in 1999.
David Prodger Prior to that, he worked
in the private sector as a land surveyor,
project manager and business development
manager. His most recent post was Deputy
Head of Security Policy in FCO London
where. This included: overseeing UK policy
towards NATO including in preparation
for the 2014 UK-hosted NATO Summit
in Wales; leading the UKs EU common
security and defence policy; overseeing
bilateral security policy relations between

the UK and other European countries; and

relations between the UK and the EU and
NATO Allies, as well as other partners;
conventional arms control in Europe policy;
and UK space policy. Previous FCO postings
with various key responsibilities were at the
British Embassies in Brussels, and Buenos
Aires and other posts in the FCO covering
the Middle East and Latin America. Prior
to joining the FCO, David was a Chartered
Surveyor with the UKs national mapping
agency, Ordnance Survey, working on
projects to assist international land reform
in Central and Eastern Europe, sub-Saharan
Africa and the Caribbean. He also worked
as a computer analyst in market research
and in the upstream oil exploration and
production business with BP and others
across a range of locations from Papua
New Guinea, the Persian Gulf, the North Sea
and Colombia. David is married to Tiffany
and has three children. Your bustling British
colony of Florida welcomes you, David!.

are handled by the British Consulate-General

email queries to askflorida@fco.gov.uk
n PUB WIT: Somebody emailed me
photos of actual UK pub signs which aim
to lure in patrons. Alas, the sender omitted
the pubs name and city but I can see they
are real chalk-written signs by some witty
British owner. I so miss our natural wit.

The 440 Train

by Linda Colucci

THIS MONTHS book The 440 Train by Linda

Colucci has been very eye-opening for me.
Its a wonderful, thought provoking read that
can, if you are open enough to allow it to,
change your life.
Marlo, Lucinda, Maddie and Bea come from
very different backgrounds and each has had
their own interesting journey but they find
themselves brought together. As they talk and
get to know each other, they discover that
although their journeys were different they
certainly have many things in common. Each
is a strong person, each one believes in fate,
each one realizes that they can to a certain
point- control their own destiny and must!
Marlo is the first one we meet she is the
main character the driver so-to-speak of
things. She starts out in New Jersey, where
she was raised, and is getting along fine but
is looking for more. She meets Thomas, the
man of her dreams, a rockstar who is also
a Hollywood Stuntman, and things fast-track
from there. During this time she keeps hearing a train whistle yes there is a train nearby
but, all the same it is disturbing. One night
after work, as she gets into her car, she sees
something stuck in her windshield she pulls
it out and it is a train ticket that reads The 440
Train First Class seating to the next chapter
of your life. What on earth does this mean? Is
it a message? Does it have anything to do with
Thomas? Marlo also has the gift of sight which,
after many years, she has learned to live with
and listen to. After a lot of thought and some
confusion as to exactly the relationship is she
decides to move to Los Angeles with him and
things are perfect for awhile. Through many
ups and downs when I say downs I mean in
the basement downs Marlo and Thomas stick
together and come out the other side much
stronger in both relationship and personally.
We meet Lucinda next, a fun-loving, tall and
striking blonde Texan. She is a hair stylist and
make-up artist in Austin Texas. Lucinda has
suffered some tragedies in her life when she
was younger but her intense faith and close
family ties have always gotten her through it.
She is doing quite well but has always been a
loner and although married once, it ended in
divorce over too many fights about his drug
addiction. She has disturbing dreams and is
awoke one night by a train whistle she jumps
up and runs around the house trying to locate
where the sound is coming from she feels a
haunting feeling that something is coming for
her. She is taking drama classes and she gets
cast in a Martin Scorsese film. While on the set
she meets Ricky and immediately feels drawn
to him. He doesnt seem to take much notice,
even though they seem to keep bumping into
each other. One day, when she is putting on a
skirt in wardrobe she gets poked by something
sticking in the back pocket its a train ticket
The 440 Train First Class seating to the
next chapter of your life. Ricky is there and
tells her someone must be playing a joke on
her and then tells her hed like to see more of
her. Fast forward and she also moves to LA to

be with Ricky and although their relationship

too has its severe ups and downs, they stick it
out and come through it.
Maddie is Filipino and graduated at the top
of her class and lives with her family in Manila.
She is a runner and this keeps her steady. She
is also deeply faithful a Catholic. Maddie has
visions or gets visits from her Aunt Etana who
she was very close to. At times it scares her
but she grows to accept and nurtures those
visits. One Sunday afternoon while she is at the
New Delhi Asian games in Manila she meets
Howie an American hands-on healer and
hypnotist. He is working with the athletes he
is six-foot-three and blonde and really stands
out. She is quite taken by him and is taken
aback when she feels a tap on her shoulder
and its him! Fast track forward way too
many details to get into here she marries
Howie and moves to Los Angeles with him
and they have a child. She loves the house in
the canyon and helps Howie with his practice
but begins to feel that things arent right. She
keeps hearing a train whistle how can that
be? She lives in a canyon?
Finally we meet Bea. Although she resides in
New Jersey she is really a Southern Belle and
is quite successful in the field of office design.
Although very successful and basically seems
to have everything men around all the time
she doesnt feel fulfilled.
She wants love real love.
One night she gets fed up
and decides shes going
out to find love! She gets
dressed up to the nines and
goes to her local bar. She
meets Billie and although
he hits on her she realizes
he would much rather be with another guy who
walks in they talk for quite some time and she
urges him to go for it, which he does and
she again, finds herself alone. She goes into
the bathroom and as she asks for the Lords
help she hears a train whistle this isnt the
first time she wonders, What the darn tootin
is it with these trains? Cant a girl have a pee in
private? She hears a wonderful guitar player as
she leaves the restroom and thinks to herself,
this guy plays his guitar like hes fondling a
woman! She comes in and sits down and as
she looks at him, she reaches into her purse
for her compact and guess what she finds? A
train ticket! The 440 Train First Class seating
to the next chapter of your life. How the heck
did that get in there and what does it mean?
She meets the guitar player, Andy and after
spending a lot of time together they move in
together and also move to LA.
As it turns out all of the guys knew each
other already and at a get together on Malibu
beach one day, as the couples arrive and the
gals get introduced, we hear about each ones
past and how much they have in common and
they realize they have all been brought together.
Marlo decides to start a book club and these
gals are the first four.
I know Ive jumped around a bit but I dont want
to give it all away. Its a compelling read I read
it in two days would have been one but life
got in the way! It really makes one think about
life and things and has helped me to discover
that my 440 Train has arrived and its time to
get on board and start the next exciting chapter
in my life. Its a must read I cant wait for
Lindas next book!

Tea Shop Review

By Patty Smith

The High Tea Cottage is located at 21938

Costanso St, Woodland Hills, CA 91364
(818) 887-2117. www.highteacottage.com.
I had the wonderful opportunity of being
invited to The High Tea Cottage a few weeks
ago. What an amazing place! Although I grew
up in the Valley I wasnt aware of it unfortunately for me.
Jenn McGrath is the
owner and couldnt
be nicer. The tea selection is unbelievable well over 75
different teas from
all over the world!
The setting is small I believe it was a house
at one time. There are three different rooms
to sit in as well as a patio out back. The
tables are covered in white table linens and
set properly, the service is superb. I had the
chicken salad with fresh fruit I didnt want to
eat it it was too pretty to eat! Im glad I did
as it was beyond delicious! The scones were
just perfect some places serve what they
call scones but they are more like southern
biscuits these are perfect. And of course,
double Devon cream to go with them (the diet
went out the window!). I had a lovely almond
tea Queen Elizabeths Coronation Almond
Festival. Really nice almond flavor not too
overwhelming just lovely. For dessert we had
lemon tart with fresh fruit. No rush plan on
spending two hours and make reservations!
I cant think of a nicer place to spend a relaxing
afternoon. There are several different options
for teas with different course and yes, a real
Cream Tea is available. They do gift baskets
too! You must give it a try for all the options
and reservations please visit their website!

Justin Rose came from three strokes

behind on the final round to win the Quicken
Loans National at Bethesda, Maryland, on the
last weekend of June. A four under 280 put
him in a play-off with Shawn Stefani, who
found the water, leaving the Briton to win it on
the first play-off hole. It was Roses sixth PGA
title, his first since winning the US Open last
summer. Tiger Woods competed for the first
time since his surgery, but did not survive the
cut. Same weekend, Englishman Greg Owen,
won the Web.Com United Leasing Championship at Newburgh, Indiana, taking the honours
with a nine under 279, one stroke clear of
Ryan Armour.Graeme McDowell started
the final round of the French Open at Paris,
July 6, eight strokes adrift of the leader, the
American, Kevin Stadler. The final eighteen
drew a four under 67, in wet and windy conditions that saw him retain the trophy he won
last year. The northern Irelanders one stroke
victory, a winning five under 279, should earn
him a Ryder Cup place Colin Montgomery
never won a US tournament on the regular
PGA tour, but hes making up for lost time. He
won the US Senior Open at Edmond, OK, July

hole when both had finished on five under

ago. Same weekend, Rory McIIroy blasted
off with a seven under par 64 in the first round
of the Scottish Open at Royal Aberdeen, but
a 78 on the next round severely slowed him
down. Justin Rose took the honours where a
six under 65 on the final round gave him six

top Brit finisher five strokes distant.

McIIroys Is Magic

Rory McIIroy put on a spectacular performance at Royal Liverpool, at Hoylake, July

20, where he claimed his third Major championship after winning the British Open with
two strokes to spare over his nearest rivals.
The 25-year-old Northern Irelander led from
start to finish in one of his most convincing
career displays to date. A confident jaunt
around the fairway epitomized a positiveness
and enthusiasm that was there for everyone
to see. McIIroy finished with a 17 under 271,
while the other best finishing Brit was fellow
Ulsterman, Graeme McDowell seven strokes
behind. Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, Ross
Fisher and Jamie Donaldson missed the
cut, as did former champions Sir Nick Faldo,
Ernie Els, Sandy Lyle and Paul Lawrie.

Mercedes Leads Formula One

120,000 racing fans gathered at Silverstone, July 6, for the British Grand Prix, where
Lewis Hamilton starting from sixth on the grid
claimed the glory. Mercedes team-mate Nico
Rosberg, used his pole position to keep him
ahead until the 29th lap when his gearbox
gave out. Hamilton took the lead and the
winning points, to put him five drivers points
distant of Rosberg. Williams Valtteri Bottas
was second with Red Bulls Daniel Ricciardo
third. Kimi Raikkonen was involved in a high
speed crash on the first lap which delayed
the race for an hour before it was restarted.

The Finn got away fairly unscathed and was

diagnosed with severely bruised ankles. The
German Grand Prix at Hockenheim, July 20,
saw a crash in qualifying put Lewis Hamilton
back to 20th on the grid, but he fought his
way through the field to finish in third place.
Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, was
in pole position, he won. closely followed
by Williams Valterri Bottas. Rosberg leads
the championship after 10 of 19 races
completed on 190pts, with Hamilton chasing
with 176pts.

Boxing
Former WBO lightweight champion Ricky
Burns (36-4-1), who lost his first bout in ten
years and his crown to Terrence Crawford
in March, was unsuccessful at Glasgow late
June, in a WBC eliminator bout. Fighting the
unbeaten Dejan Zlaticann the Montenegrin
had the Coatbridge fighter canvas bound in
the first round and always looked dangerous.
Zlaticann(19-0) won a split-decision.Big
punch-up at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, July
12, where cruiserweight Nathan Cleverly
(28-1) stopped the Argentinian, Alejandro
Emilio Valori (15-5) in the second round and
his potential next bout opponent Tony Bellew,
(22-2) knocked out Brazilian, Julio Cesar Dos
Santos (26-3) in the fifth. Olympic superheavyweight gold medalist Anthony Joshua,
witnessed the ref pull out veteran 47-year-old
Matt Skeleton (28-8) in the second round,
pushing his record to 7-0. Olympic bronze
medalist, Anthony Agogo went 7-0 too, after

FIRST THIS year it was Jonny Wilkinson

who went, then Ian Balshaw followed and
finally, it is Mike Tindall. The remaining
playing survivor of Englands World Cupwinning team has decided to retire from
the game. Hard-running centre Tindall, 35,
earned 75 caps and captained his country
in a career that spanned 17 seasons eight
with Bath and nine with Gloucester.
He had hoped to coach with Gloucester
but the departure of Nigel Davies at the
end of the last season put paid to those
hopes. Instead he will get on with a far more
worthwhile career -being a celebrity. He is
married to the equestrienne success, Zara
Phillips, Princess Annes daughter who is
fifteenth in line to the throne. Well, at least
one member of the family is in a top fifteen.

Jones Off Too

Welsh prop Adam Jones is moving

across the Seven Bridge to join wealthy,
ambitious Bristol. They are currently in the
second tier of English rugby but have attracted a number of top Welsh internationals
to their cause. He will link up with former
Ospreys team-mates, Ryan Jones, Ian Evans and the gifted runner, Matthew Morgan.
Behind the players moves there lies a
far more fundamental issue that is crucially
paralysing Welsh rugby. Relations between
the Welsh Rugby Union and the four regions
(featuring the Scarlets, Blues, Ospreys and
Dragons) have finally broken down, with the
regions withdrawing support for the WRU.
The breakdown threatens the very existence of the regions with a loss of financial
support from the WRU.
Players like Leigh Halfpenny have opted
to move to Toulon while only Sam Warburton has signed for the WRU and will receive
a central contract. The one bright thing in
this whole sorry business is that Gareth An-

Village at the 2014 Commonwealth Games
in Glasgow. The Village Mayor is a longstanding tradition of the Games and the
organisers have sought to add a Highland
flavour into the mix during the games which
run to August 3.

Irish Need Lucky Break

The Irish are desperately looking for a

successor to Brian ODriscoll. Back in 1958,
flyhalf Jackie Kyle retired, possibly the most
brilliant player from his country. The search
to find the man to wear his mantle didnt last
long as Mike Gibson came on to the scene
in 1964. He graced the international stage
for 15 years but it was to be another 20
years before we saw his like again.
The twenty-year-old ODriscoll first
wore the green shirt in 1999 against
Australia fittingly his opponents in his
last international. He played 133 times
for Ireland, eight for the Lions, holds the
most number of Six Nations tries (26) and
won four triple Crowns along with two Six
Nations Championship, one the first Grand
Slam since 1948.
This is when the Irish need their fabled
luck.

over Brazil, but in Europe the 2014-15 continental competition was bringing the European
minnows together in the preliminary rounds.
One Scottish side, three Welsh teams and
three Northern Ireland clubs entered the first
qualifying round of the Europa League Cup,
July 3-10, with four of them making it into the
next round. Adam Rooney hit two in the first
leg and a hat-trick in the second as Aberdeen
overcame FK Daugava Riga 5-0, and won
3-0 away in Latvia. Derry City ran roughshod
over Aberystwth Town, 4-0 at home and 5-0
away, while Crusaders beat Lithuanians FK
Ekranas 3-1 at home and the away leg 2-1.
Linfield beat B36 Torshavn in the Faroes
islands 2-1, while a 1-1 home draw put them
through. Welsh sides Airbus UK Broughton,
and Bangor City, did not progress.
The second qualifying round, first leg, July
17, saw Crusaders take a 4-0 hammering in
Sweden as IF Brommapojkarna put the goals
away. In Switzerland, St Johnstone took an
early second half lead courtesy of Steven
Maclean, but FC Luzern equalized and the
game ended one apiece. Aberdeen drew 0-0
at Pittodrie, against Dutch side FC Groningen,
Motherwell tied 2-2 at Fir Park where UMF
Stjarnan of Iceland visited. A goal three minutes from the end gave Linfield a 1-0 win over
AIK Stockholm, while Derry City lost 1-0 at
home the Belarus side Shakhtyor Soligorsk.
Celtics new coach Ronny Deila, voiced
his aggravation that the Scottish club must
win three Champions League qualifying
rounds to reach the Group stage. He was very
relieved however, when Callum McGregor,
scored six minutes from time in Iceland to
give the Hoops a 1-0 win over KR Reykjavik
in the first leg, first qualifying round, July 15.
Welsh Champions, The New Saints, lost 1-0
at Slovan Bratislava, while Northern Ireland
champions Cliftonville, played a goalless
draw at home against Debrecen of Norway.

Scotland Welcomes The Nations

For The Commonwealth Games

Scottish pride was in triple abundance

at Glasgows Celtic Park, July 23, where
the opening ceremony of the 2014 Commonwealth Games beamed out to a billion
homes worldwide.
The Games running through August 3,
featured some 4,500 athletes from 71 different countries in 17 sports over a period of
11 days of competition. Among the popular
sports of swimming, athletics, cycling, rowing and sailing, there was also lawn-bowls,
netball, archery and ten pin bowling. The
competing nations marched in to Celtic Park,
with the host nation traditionally being the last
to enter but the Scottish team did get the
loudest roar of the night.
The first day of competition witnessed
double gold for Scotland, as sisters Kimber-

The second leg, second qualifying round

of the Champions League, July 22, saw
Celtic take on KR Reykjavik at Murrayfield in
Edinburgh, as the Commonwealth Games had
commandeered Parkhead. It proved a stroll
in the park for the hoops however, where a
brace by Virgil van Dijk and Teemu Pukki
produced a 4-0 victory over the Icelanders.
The New Saints, played their home leg at
Rhyl, where Slovan Bratislava grabbed two
goals in the final 16 minutes for a 2-0 win,
leading the Welsh Champions to an early European exit. Cliftonvilles visit to Hungary got
into trouble in the 55th minute when Jamie
McGovern was red carded. The Northern
Ireland champions lost 2-0 to Debrecen, and
were eliminated.
The second leg, second qualifying round
of the Europa League, July 24, had Aberdeen
beat FC Groningen 2-1 in the Netherlands
and go through courtesy of goals by Adam
Rooney and Niall McGinn. St Johnstone will
join them in the next round, after a 1-1 home
tie with FC Lucern went to a penalty shootout
with the Saints winning 5-4. Motherwell was
beaten 3-2 in Iceland by UMF Stjarnan, and
thus ends their European adventure, while
the Northern Ireland sides, Linfield, Derry
City and the Crusaders made their exits too.
North America played host to four top
British sides on July 24, where 86,000 plus
watched Manchester United overwhelm the
LA galaxy 7-0 at the Rose Bowl. Manchester City came away 4-1 winners against
Sporting Kansas City, Tottenham topped
FC Toronto 3-2, and Aston Villa won 2-0 at
FC Dallas. AS Roma beat Liverpool 1-0 at
Fenway Park in Boston.

Sporting Passings

Argentinean born Alfredo Di Stefano, was

the first international footballer to receive
world acclaim for his spectacular on-pitch
skills. After winning championships in
Argentina with River Plate and Colombias
Millonarios Bogota, Real Madrid signed the
27-year-old in 1953, and his goal scoring
proclivities saw the Spanish side win the
inaugural European Cup consecutively from
1956-1960, plus eight Spanish league titles.
Di Stefano played six times for Argentina, and
four times for Colombia, before receiving his
Spanish citizenship in 1955. FIFA allowed him
to play for Spain, where he accumulated 31
caps and scored 23 goals. After eleven years
at Madrid, his goal tally was over 300. Alfredo
Di Stefano was 88.
Michael Scudamore, a Grand Nationalwinning jockey and head of a racing dynasty,
has died at the age of 81, three days after the
passing of his wife, Mary. Tributes were led
by his son, Peter, an eight-times champion
jump jockey, who described his father as
a hero.
The young jockey had his first success
at Chepstow in 1949, and would ride 496
winners until a nasty fall at Wolverampton in
1966, ended his riding career. He would win
all National Hunts prestigious races and won
the 1959 Grand National on Oxo, where only
four horses finished of 34 starters. Michael
Scudamore would turn his attention to training horses and an eager bunch of close
family would turn the Scudamore name in to
a British horseracing dynasty. His son Peter,
would be champion jockey eight times, while
grandsons Tom and Michael continued the
family tradition.
Basil DOliveira, 80, the South Africanborn England cricketer who became a pivotal
figure in the sports battle against apartheid,
died June 29 after a long illness.

His death in England

was announced by Cricket
South Africa.
DOliveira played 44
tests and four one-day
internationals for England,
his adopted nation. He was
prevented from playing
top-level cricket in South Africa in the 1950s
because he wasnt white.
He was the central figure in crickets decision to finally turn its back on South Africa
during its apartheid era. In one of the games
great controversies, DOliveira was on the
England team that was to tour South Africa in
1968. South Africa deemed that unacceptable
and the tour was called off, leading to more
than 20 years of cricket isolation.
After the DOliveira Affair, South Africa
did not play another match outside the country for 23 years and did not play any international cricket between 1970 and 1991. Only
when apartheid was dismantled following
Nelson Mandelas release from prison was
the country readmitted to cricket community.
Haroon Lorgat, the International Cricket
Council CEO, said when he grew up in
South Africa, DOliveira was revered among
nonwhites.
He scored 2,484 test runs, averaging
40.06, hit five centuries and took 47 wickets
with his probing away-swingers. He also
scored more than 19,000 first-class runs
and took 551 wickets in his 16-year career
with England and county side Worcestershire.
DOliveira was born in Cape Town in 1931
and showed great skill as a batsman and
accurate medium pace bowler. But because
he was classified as colored and nonwhite
in South Africa, he wasnt allowed to play
first-class games.
He was persuaded to move to England by
the cricket broadcaster and journalist John
Arlott, who found DOliveira a place as a
professional player in the Lancashire leagues
in northern England.
In 1968 South Africas ruling National
Party had made it clear that it would not
accept DOliveira as an England player
visiting the country for the Ashes series. But
his selection to the team underlined a shift
in sports cricket would no longer ignore
apartheid. Having sparked friction between
the two governments, the tour was canceled.
South Africas sports isolation soon began.
In 2005, DOliveira was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire
in Queen Elizabeth IIs birthday honors list.
On June 30, on the third day of the second
test between South Africa and Australia in
Johannesburg, South African players wore
black arm bands to honor DOliveira.
The Wanderers stadium also observed a
minutes silence for a man who was never
allowed to play a first-class game in South
Africa and yet became one of the most important players in his countrys cricket history.

Man City Cancels Under-21 Game

After Racism Claims
Nasri Signs New Five-Year Deal
At Man City

FRANCE midfielder Samir Nasri has signed a

new five-year contract with Manchester City,
keeping him at the English Premier League
champion until 2019.
Nasri was one of Citys key players in its
run to the league and League Cup titles last
season, scoring 11 goals in all competitions
and becoming a regular in the team under
manager Manuel Pellegrini.
Nasri failed to earn a place in Frances
squad for the World Cup in Brazil.

Premier League Will Use

Vanishing Spray This Season

MAN CITY says a friendly being played by

its Under-21 team in Croatia last month was
abandoned after team management ordered
the players off the pitch following alleged
racist abuse.
City said in a statement that its 19-year-old
French midfielder Seko Fofana, who is black,
was targeted by an opponent from Croatian
team HNK Rijeka toward the end of the first
half in Novigrad.
The Premier League champions said a
decision was taken by the management staff
to withdraw the City team from the field of
play and cancel the game.

Ross Barkley Extends Everton

Contract

SOUTHAMPTON says it has signed playmaker Dusan Tadic on a four-year deal from
Dutch side Twente for an undisclosed fee.
The 25-year-old Tadic is the first signing
of the summer by new manager Ronald Koeman. He will replace outgoing captain Adam
Lallana as the creative threat in Southamptons midfield.
Tadic has played 25 times for Serbia,
and scored 14 goals for Twente last season.

Blackpool Still In Financial Crisis

THE CRISIS at beleaguered Championship

side Blackpool has intensified with fresh accusations being made in the civil war between
the clubs chairman and president.
Blackpools chairman Karl Oyston has
released an open letter hitting back at club
president Valeri Belokon, a Latvian businessman who has a 20 percent stake in the side.
It comes with fans fearful of the future
with only 11 registered players as of July
29 but no goalkeeper ahead of their first
league match of the season at Nottingham
Forest on August 9.
Belokon accused the Oyston family of
putting financial gain ahead of the club and
of having channeled away more than 24m.
Oyston adds that the family are in this for
the long term and expresses surprise that
Belokon has been backed by the Blackpool
Supporters Trust and the Seasiders Independent Supporters Association.

ROSS BARKLEY committed his future to

Everton for another four years.
Barkley enjoyed a marvelous breakthrough
season in the 2013/14 campaign, producing
a myriad of scintillating performances, earning a place in Englands World Cup squad and
drawing comparisons with iconic players like
Michael Ballack and Paul Gascoigne.

Man United Sign Richest Kit

Sponsorship With Adidas

MANCHESTER United landed the richest

uniform deal in soccer, a $1.3bn, 10-year
agreement with Adidas that replaces its Nike
sponsorship.
The contract, worth an average of $128m
a year beginning in 2015, was announced
after Nike decided against tripling the cost
of its existing 13-year agreement.
The arrangement with Adidas underlines
the durability of Uniteds brand considering
the team is coming off its worst Premier
League season.
Adidas currently pays about $50m a
season to Chelsea and Real Madrid, and
United could make far more from the German
sportswear firm than the $1.3bn, which is
described as a minimum guarantee.
Nike has one more season as the teams
uniform maker. It recently unveiled jerseys
featuring a gold Chevrolet logo for the start
of the American automakers $559m, sevenyear jersey sponsorship deal with the team.

Nick Clegg Wants Russia Stripped Of World Cup

BRITAINS Deputy
Prime Minister wants
Russia stripped of the
right to host the 2018
World Cup to punish
President Vladimir Putin for belligerent behavior in the Ukraine Nick Clegg
crisis.
While calling for tougher sanctions
against Russia, Nick Clegg told The
Sunday Times newspaper that it is unthinkable for President Vladmir Putin to
have the opportunity to exploit footballs
biggest sporting event to enhance his
own status.
Cleggs intervention comes after some
lawmakers in Germany called for the
World Cup to be moved because of Russias alleged involvement in shooting down
a Malaysia Airlines plane over Ukraine,
killing all 298 people on board.

After this terrible, terrible downing of

that jet, it is essential that the European
Union gets tough on Vladimir Putin,
Clegg was quoted as saying. Weve got to
take tougher sanctions, but also weve got
to make it quite clear that he cannot expect
to get the privileges of being at the top
table of world affairs if hes not prepared
to play by the basic rules of world affairs.
BELLIGERENT
If he carries on with this belligerent behavior ... its unthinkable that
he should have the privilege of hosting
the World Cup in 2018. You cant have
the beautiful game marred by the ugly
aggression of Russia on the RussianUkrainian border.
Clegg, who leads Britains Liberal
Democrats, said the Russian President
had already milked the Winter Olympics in Sochi in February, and that hosting
the World Cup would be an enormous

advantage to Putin personally.

Theres no question
he sees it for himself
and for his prestige as a
huge gain, Clegg said.
The idea that the world
should accord Russia Vladimir Putin
that prestige is beyond
belief. I dont know how many people
have got to be shot out of the skies before
people say enough is enough.
Moscow has continually denied involvement in the downing of the plane.
FIFA is standing by Russia as the next
World Cup hosts, saying last month that
keeping the tournament can achieve
positive change in the country. FIFA
President Sepp Blatter had already rejected calls to strip Russia of the tournament after it annexed the Crimea earlier
this year.

Martin, With Eagle

On 18, Wins Womens
British Open

MO MARTIN hit the best shot of her life,

and it made her a major champion July 13
in the Womens British Open.
From the middle of the fairway on the
par-5 18th hole at Royal Birkdale, Martin
ripped a 3-wood that she first thought was
too short, and then worried might be too
long. It turned out to be close to perfect.
The ball hit the middle of the pin and
settled six feet away for an eagle.
An hour later, that turned out to be the
winning shot for the 31-year-old American
when Inbee Park and Shanshan Feng could
not stay under par.
I think I still need to be pinched,
Martin said.
Martin was the only player to break par
for the championship, finishing at 1-under
287 for a one-shot victory over Feng and
Suzann Pettersen.
Absolutely a dream come true, Martin
said. Safe to say its the best week of
my life.

A RACEHORSE owned by the Queen,

that won the prestigious Gold Cup at Royal
Ascot last year, has tested positive for the
banned painkiller, morphine.
The British Horseracing Authority
announced last month that tests on five
horses under the care of various trainers
showed the presence of morphine in their
A samples.
Last month, the queens bloodstock and
racing adviser, John Warren, said that the
monarchs five-year-old filly Estimate was
one of the five.
Buckingham Palace said that early indications suggest that Estimate consumed the
substance as a result of contaminated feed.
Warren said in a statement that Estimates trainer Michael Stoute is working
closely with the feed company involved
to discover how the product may have
become contaminated prior to delivery to
his stables.
Estimate finished second in this years
Gold Cup behind Leading Light.
Warren added: Her Majesty has been
informed of the situation.
Previously, Britains most publicized
case of a horse testing positive for morphine was Be My Royal after he had won
the 2002 Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury.
The horse was subsequently disqualified.

Chisora-Fury
Fight Is Off After
Sparring Injury
DERECK CHISORA last month withdrew from his European heavyweight
title fight against Tyson Fury after
fracturing his hand during a sparring
session.
The Londoner was set to meet Fury
in Manchester to contest the European
belt and the vacant British title July 26
but the fight will now be rescheduled
with a new date to be announced shortly.
I cant tell you how disappointed I
am to have to pull out of the fight against
Fury, but it is on the advice of my specialist that I have to do this, Chisora
said following the announcement.
After a bad-tempered runup to the
fight, Fury reacted unsympathetically
to his opponents withdrawal.
Told you all what would happen find
me a real man to fight the furious1,
Chisora tweeted. If anyone feels like
a fight Im in Bolton town center and I
feel like a rumble.
Last months scheduled bout was
also set to be a final eliminator for the
WBO world title, currently held by
Wladimir Klitschko.
Chisora and Fury fought three years
ago, with Fury winning on points.

US Could Bid For

2026 World Cup
WITH THE US football teams considered
success and incredible viewing figures that
backed their run in the World Cup there are
already suggestions another bid may be
ready to be tabled for the 2026 tournament.
FIFA bosses have even spoken positively of the thought FIFA secretary
general Jerome Valcke said, speaking
to Brazil newspaper Globe: There is a
commitment to work with US Soccer. He
added: What we see in the United States is
staggering. The audience is unprecedented,
more than the NBA. The country has the
largest level of youth soccer in the world,
with 20 million young people playing.
IMPRESSED
FIFA president Sepp Blatter has been
equally as impressed with the US, and
echoed Valckes sentiments: The level of
interest in the USA is very high.
This World Cup is really getting under
peoples skin the quality of the football
is incredible.
US Soccer president and FIFA executive committee member Sunil Gulati has
previously said the United States could
bid to host the 2026 tournament, but only
if bidding rules change.
The US, who previously hosted the
World Cup in 1994, lost out to Qatar for
the 2022 tournament.
Even the US President Barack Obama
lead a partisan chant for the team prior to
a press conference last month.

Report: Ecclestone Mulls F1 Commercial Takeover

BERNIE ECCLESTONE says he is
considering buying back the commercial rights to Formula One, even as the
83-year-old remains on trial for alleged
bribery.
Ecclestone is now a minority shareholder in the body that owns F1s commercial rights, having sold the majority
stake to the hedge fund CVC Capital
Partners, but remains as chief executive
of the companies that own the rights and
is still the sports main powerbroker.
Amid reports that CVC is looking to
sell out of F1, Ecclestone told Britains
Daily Express newspaper last month that
he is interested in taking back the stake
he sold 15 years ago.
ACTION
It is possible, although one or two
other companies are interested and I
would not enter an auction, Ecclestone

England FA Wants Garcia

Corruption File Published
ENGLANDS Football Association
wants FIFA prosecutor Michael Garcias ongoing confidential report into
alleged World Cup bidding corruption
to be published.
FA chairman Greg Dyke tells a British parliamentary panel that we as the
FA will ask for it.
Dyke says if FIFA and Garcia refuse
then I hope the Sunday Times gets hold
of it. The British newspaper has repeatedly alleged corruption in FIFAs choice

Premier League Transfers

of Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup.

Last month, FIFA said Garcias report should be delivered to FIFA ethics
judge Joachim Eckert in September.
FIFA and Garcia have never published his investigation files since his
appointment in 2012.
Garcias past probes include bribery
and financial wrongdoing implicating
Qatari former FIFA official Mohamed
bin Hammam, and former World Cup
marketing agency ISL.

was quoted as saying.

CVC had said it would dismiss
Ecclestone from his roles if he was
found guilty on the bribery charges, so
a buyback of the rights was regarded as
his only way to remain in control of the
sport he has run for decades.
However Ecclestone told the Express

that he believed it
would be difficult
to remove him even
if he was convicted,
because he has a contract with the company and not with
the shareholders.

Scotland To Play
England In November
SCOTLAND and England will meet at
Celtic Park on November 18 in an international friendly.
The game will be Englands last senior
fixture of 2014 and comes three days after
a Euro 2016 qualifier away to Slovenia
The last time the two countries met was
last August when England won 3-2 thanks
to a Rickie Lambert goal.

DEFENDING champion and third seed Andy

Murray, opened the 2014 Wimbledon
Championships, June 23-July 6, beating
David Goffin of Belgium, in the opening
show-case match on centre court. The
Scot and third seed would go on to win his
next three encounters without losing a set.
He saw off Blaz Rola of Slovenia, Roberto
Bautista Aguy of Spain, and Kevin Anderson
of South Africa. But in his quarter final match
against the 11th seed Grigor Dimitrov, a
23-year-old Bulgarian getting rave notices,
Murrays game plan unraveled. For reigning
Wimbledon champion Murray, seeking his
sixth consecutive appearance in the Wimbledon semi-finals it was a disaster. Dimitrov
confidently pushed the Scot aside in a game
lasting just a minute over two hours, winning
6-1, 7-6 (7-4) 6-2. Last year, Murray made
tennis history becoming the first Brit in 77
years to win Wimbledon. The defeat sees him
drop to tenth in world ranking his lowest in six
years. Of the other British single competitors
only Naomi Broady, and Heather Watson,
got out of the first round. Broady was beaten
in the second by Caroline Wozniacki, while
Watson lost a tight three setter to Anglique
Kerber of Germany, who would later dispatch
Maria Sharapova.
