Pick up a map of the colonies and 1 crayon.


Turn to pg. 82 in your book, using the map
label and shade the Southern colonies.
Place Map in your binder.
Get out a sheet of paper for notes.

Colonies
Unit 1: Colonization
The Southern Colonies
Georgia
Virginia
Maryland
North Carolina
South Carolina
Location was everything
First settlement was
Roanoke.
It failed because the soil
was bad and it produced
weak crops.
Ship bring supplies to
the colony and the
colony was completely
gone.
Virginia Colony
The colony was funded
by the Virginia
Company.
This was a company that funded
the colonization of Virginia.
Jamestown was the first
permanent settlement
that was established by
the Virginia Company.

Jamestown Struggles
Jamestown was
surrounded by swamps.
Good = because it made
it hard to attack.
Bad = there were a lot
of mosquitoes that
carried deadly diseases.
Disease killed most of
the Jamestown settlers.
The colonists would be
so sick that they would
not be able to take care
of their own crops.
Tobacco Saves Jamestown
John Rolfe (married
Pocahontas) learned
how to grow tobacco in
Virginia = $$$$
English loved smoking,
however they could not
grow it in their
environment.
House of Burgesses
This was the first form of
government created in
colonial America.
Any male over the age of 17
year of age could vote
Make laws and raise taxes.
Governor could veto them.
Why was it created?
As the population of Virginia
got larger, there needed to be
a local government

Virginia Relationship with Natives
As plantation fields got
larger, the settlers moved
onto Natives land and
this would cause territory
wars.
The Native Americans
were led by Powhatan.
Daughter was Pocahontas
Fought against
Jamestown settlement
and eventually lost.

Bacons Rebellion
What was this about?
1) Farmers wanted more
land and because of that
they would go take
Native American land
2) Governor Berkeley
raised taxes on farmers
and gave high positions
to his friends.

Bacons Rebellion
Led by Nathaniel Bacon
Bacon raise an army to fight the
Native Americans.
Bacon burns Jamestown, and
overthrows Governor in September
of 1676.
Bacon dies in October and the
rebellion weakened.
Governor Berkeley took over again
and hung 29 men because of the
rebellion.


Georgia Colony
Purpose to protect South
Carolina from Spanish
Florida
Colonies was made up of
debtors and poor English
traders
Very strict rules (no one
could drink or own
slaves).

Based on what you have learned about Pocahontas
draw what you think would be an accurate picture of
her. (You may include her interacting with other
people) You must include a description of your own
historical bias.
Tell John Rolfes Story: we know a little about John
Smiths story and about Pocahontas story, write a
paragraph of how you think John Rolfe would explain
the situation.
Create a Venn diagram showing similarities and
differences between the perspectives of Roy Crazy
Horse, Pocahontas, and John Smith.
