The students will brainstorm their ideas of the theme of A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon.
12. Justification for choice of Instructional Strategies and Research Models (if used) Reviewing story elements prior to reading the story helps to activate the students prior knowledge and gives them a focus as we read the book. The students worked on the PowerPoint as a whole group because of our limitation with technology accounts in the summer school setting. This was also a means of scaffolding by letting the students help each other in the class discussions.
13. Resources for Students Their eyes, ears and brains.
14. List of resources/materials used in this lesson: - A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon - PowerPoint presentation on story elements - Promethium Board
15. Justification for Selection of Materials and Resources A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon was chosen because this story is entertaining and it has a clear theme that the students can identify. The story also has a limited number of characters and settings, so it is not too overwhelming for the students as they identify the story elements. The use of the Promethium Board and PowerPoint was chosen so that the students had an interactive visual for reviewing and identifying story elements. Also, students were able to come to the board individually to add information to the class list of characters and settings.
16. Assessment Students will be assessed formatively by the teacher and LMS by observing their participation in the class discussions. The students performance in this lesson will help to determine if the students need further review and practice with the concept of story elements.
