7. Learner Characteristics & Implication to Lesson:
This class is a combination of students who have completed 2
nd
or 3
rd
grade. Given that
this is summer school, reading levels were not taken into account when class groups were
created. Students attending Fields Road ES Summer School are from a variety of schools
from all around Montgomery County. Scaffolding of the lesson will be necessary.

8. Instructional Objectives
The students will listen to A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon and identify the story
elements in order to summarize the plot.

From Fields Road Regional Summer School Instructional Focus Guide:
Teachers: The instructional focus document is to provide you with guidance when
planning for instruction. We have included curriculum connections for you to utilize
Curriculum 2.0 sample learning tasks and resources (if needed). Your instruction is not
limited to these focus areas, however, we want to provide you with some guidance since
there is not a specific curriculum focus for Regional Summer School.

print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting or plot

11. Library lesson
1. Using the LMS created PowerPoint, the LMS will lead the students in a review of story
elements (characters, setting, problem, solution, plot, and theme).
2. The students will listen to a read aloud of A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon.
3. The students will work as a group to identify the characters and settings of the story.
Students will come up to the Promethium Board to add items to our list in the
PowerPoint. .
4. The LMS will review the model Somebody Wanted But So Then as a tool for
summarizing fiction. The students will guide the LMS through writing a summary of the
story using the Somebody Wanted But So Then model.
5. The students will brainstorm their ideas of the theme of A Bad Case of Stripes by
David Shannon.

12. Justification for choice of Instructional Strategies and Research Models (if used)
Reviewing story elements prior to reading the story helps to activate the students prior
knowledge and gives them a focus as we read the book. The students worked on the
PowerPoint as a whole group because of our limitation with technology accounts in the
summer school setting. This was also a means of scaffolding by letting the students help
each other in the class discussions.

15. Justification for Selection of Materials and Resources
A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon was chosen because this story is entertaining
and it has a clear theme that the students can identify. The story also has a limited
number of characters and settings, so it is not too overwhelming for the students as they
identify the story elements. The use of the Promethium Board and PowerPoint was
chosen so that the students had an interactive visual for reviewing and identifying story
elements. Also, students were able to come to the board individually to add information
to the class list of characters and settings.

16. Assessment
Students will be assessed formatively by the teacher and LMS by observing their
participation in the class discussions. The students performance in this lesson will help
to determine if the students need further review and practice with the concept of story
elements.
