Course description World History is a one school year long course that covers the origins of world through present time. Reading, writing and critical thinking skills will be practiced and assessed often. Students are expected to participate and put all of their best effort into everything we do for the course.
How to be successful in Honors World History 1. Get organized and maintain a schedule 2. Set goals 3. Prioritize your goals and work 4. Listen to others ideas and analyze how they reinforce or conflict with your own 5. Evaluate your actions and always look for ways to improve
Expectations All students are expected to be on time and prepared at the beginning of class. All assigned readings and work should be completed and turned in at the opening of class time. Students will be positive contributors to classroom seminars. Students are expected to be present in the class and not on their phones or other technological devices that would be a distraction during the class time. Students will be respectful of their other classmates throughout the class but especially during seminars.
Technology Policy NO cellphones will be used at any time without permission. No headphones or music will be allowed during any class time as well. The first time a cellphone is being used inappropriately, the student will be given a verbal warning to put the cellphone away. The second offense will include a written warning. The third offense will result in a phone call home and the cellphone will have to be picked up from the main office.
Materials - One 1 inch thick three ringed binder - 5 subject dividers - College ruled loose-leaf paper - Black and blue pens - Highlighter - Tablet and necessary accessories Teacher will notify the students on days that the tablet will not be necessary, and when the notebook will be utilized. If the student comes to class without a tablet, or a tablet that has no battery life, they are considered unprepared for class. Student will receive a lower grade for the day by not coming fully prepared to participate in classroom activities. Assignments Students will be assessed on a variety of ways throughout the course. Required work is expected to be turned in on time. Late work will only be accepted if there was an excused absence on the day the assignment was due. If a student knows that he or she will be absent on a specific day, than all efforts should be made to turn in the assignments prior to that absence. There will be NO EXTRA CREDIT - students are expected to focus on all of the required work. Notebook - Must be divided into the following sections: o Before tab 1: Class syllabus o Tab 1: Notes o Tab 2: Handouts o Tab 3: Quizzes/ Tests o Tab 4: Article evaluations o Tab 5: Research/Project/Miscellaneous
Article Evaluations - Article evaluations will be due every Monday. The student is to find an article on World issues from a valid internet or newspaper source. The first page of the article should be printed and stapled in front of the evaluation. The evaluation will include: brief summary of the article, your personal opinion on the situation (if you disagree- then how would you like to change the scenario, if you agree- why do you think this is good), and a conclusion (include what you learned from the article and why it is important). Quizzes - Quizzes can be given weekly and will go along with the assigned readings for the week. There will be no make-ups for quizzes unless an excused absence is given. Make up quizzes must be done during the same week of the quiz that is being made up, and will be done during the students lunch period.
Chapter Exams - After the end of every chapter, a test may be given with a variety of components. Students will only be able to make up the exam with an excused absence and will be done after school. Students will not be able to take the make-up exam more than three days after their return to class. Participation - All students will be expected to participate in a manner that is relative to the topic and respectful to fellow classmates. Students will be assessed based on the quality of their statements and not the quantity of them. Participation can include a variety of activities, presentations and classroom seminars. Students must be well prepared for any of the listed activities and more by staying on top of readings, assignments and other work. Handouts and Homework - In compliance with all other assignments given, handouts and homework are to be turned in on the deadline assigned. Due to the high integration of technology into this class, it will sometimes be necessary for students to be able to access and print from a website. The student will need to be responsible in printing those materials and may be docked percentage points for not having the materials printed in class. If the deadline cannot be reached due to an excused absence; than the assignment is to be turned in during the next class period they are in attendance. Quarterly Project - Every quarter the students may work on a project to be determined that coincides with the units of study. These may include research papers, presentations or other projects that may be suitable with the content. During these projects research outside of the classroom may be a necessity. Students will be allotted as much time as possible in the classroom for research and other tasks that may need to be completed for the project. These projects will not all be completed within the classroom and students will have to manage their time wisely to complete both the project and other assigned work. Plagiarism and Cheating This will not be tolerated during this course. If you have questions about citations please do not hesitate to ask. If cheating and plagiarism is found to be occurring than appropriate actions will be taken and an F on the assignment will likely ensue.
