Professional Communications Syllabus

Course Purpose:
This course is designed to assist you in learning, developing, and applying basic communication skills in
personal, public and professional settings.
Required Materials:
> black/blue pen or pencil
> 3-ring binder/notebook & folder
> notebook paper
> a positive attitude
> flash drive
Grades:
60% Speeches/ Exams/Projects
40% Quizzes/daily Assignments (Classwork & Homework)/Participation
Class rules:
1. BE RESPONSIBLE! Be prepared. Be on time. Do your best!
2. BE RESPECTFUL! Be attentive and kind to everyone!
3. Specific Rules as determined and posted by CHS Administration!
Presentation Policy:
> Its fun, I promise!! This is a communications class and my goal is to help with your communication
abilities. Therefore, you will be required to give presentations and speeches in order to pass this class.
And although I understand that speaking in front of your peers is not easy for everyone, it is an
important skill that will benefit you throughout life. So it is in your best interest to give it your best
effort.
>Every student will be expected to be attentive and respectful during all presentations. Sleeping,
talking, passing notes, walking around, or anything deemed a distraction will not be tolerated.
Noncompliance will be considered refusing to participate in class you will be referred to your
principal and will be given a zero for that assignment.
>You are not allowed to have anything in your mouth while making a class presentation or speech. This
may include, but is not limited to gum , toothpicks, lip piercings, tongue piercings, etc

Assignment Policy:
All Assignments are due as assigned. Failure to comply will result in a late assignment deduction of 10
points per day. Please notify me ahead of time if you know you are going to be absent due to an
excused appointment or participating in an excused extracurricular CHS activity so I can better facilitate
your needs.
Make-up Policy:
Students absent from class will be allowed the number of days absent, plus one day, to submit and/or
perform make-up work. It is your responsibility to take care of business within this timeframe. Note:
Work that was due on the date or first date of an absence is due upon the return of the student. Make-
up work is work that was assigned while the student was absent.
Tardy Policy:
>Students are expected to be in class on time:
Any and all students arriving late to class must register their tardiness in the Tardy Book located on the
desk at the entrance door.

Tutorials:
>Friday from 12:37 TO 1:07 IS THE ASSIGNED MANDATORY TUTORIAL DAY FOR THIS CLASS. If you are
failing---this is the REQUIRED time for you to come to my classroom for tutorials. Failure to attend will
result in a referral to your principal. Please dont let that happen.
Tutorial Times other than during my conference period will be posted on my bulletin board. Additional
times either before or after regular school hours may be available.
