WELCOME TO ART I !!
Please share this syllabus with your parent/guardian. It is important that everyone
understands the expectations for the class.

**PLEASE HAVE PARENT/GUARDIAN READ AND SIGN THE LASTPAGE
This is worth a HOMEWORK grade of 20pts!

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Art 1 is an introductory semester long course that focuses on drawing skills and the elements of art. Students will explore
in depth the elements of art and how they are used in various artworks. Students will also practice drawing skills using various
methods and materials to create 2-D works of art. Art criticism and art history will also be discussed and implemented in this
course.

As a studio art class, there are three general components to this class based on Ohios Visual Art
Standards (OVAS). All lessons and activities are planned around the following areas as outlined by OVAS:

Personal Choice and Vision: Students construct and solve problems of personal relevance and interest when expressing
themselves through visual art.

Critical and Creative Thinking: Students combine and apply artistic and reasoning skills to imagine, create, realize and refine
artworks in conventional and innovative ways.

Authentic Application and Collaboration: Students work individually and in groups to focus ideas and create artworks that
address genuine local and global community needs.

Literacy: As consumers, critics and creators, students evaluate and understand artworks and other texts produced in the media
forms of the day.


THE STATE STANDARDS: (**And what they look like in this class)

PERCEIVING/KNOWING (PE) -Observe, listen, attend to, discriminate
**Talking about and viewing art and art ideas. The benefits to the student include:
Awareness, observational skills, improved critical thinking, visual literacy, PERSONAL CHOICE AND VISION!!

PRODUCING/PERFORMING (PR) Generate, create, realize, use and master skills.
**Learning new skills and techniques, practice in planning projects and CREATING THE PROJECT!!

RESPONDING AND REFLECTING (RE) Make connections, reconsider, question, self assess
**Evaluating/critiquing your own work and the work of others, revising when possible/necessary,
learning from famous artists and styles (ART HISTORY).

An atmosphere that rewards positive behaviors.
Lessons that are appropriate, interesting and relevant for you.
GOALS: By the end of the semester you will be able to:
-Gain or improve skills in observation
-Identify and mix color families
-Identify and use the Elements of Art in a composition with at least one Principle of Design
-Identify at least one Art Period.
-Improve present drawing skills.
-Discuss works of art using appropriate vocabulary.

GUIDELINES FOR SUCCESS
While in the art room, we will conduct ourselves in the following manner:

Put forth EFFORT. TRY. Do our BEST.
Think before we act or speak. (is this helpful/necessary/kind?)
Be responsible for our own behavior.
Be respectful.
Use materials wisely.

I will model BEHAVIOR that I expect in this class and that I believe will be expected from you in your
future career/work. This includes the following:
Art Room Rules:
1. ON-TIME ATTENDANCE EVERYDAY
2. CELL PHONES ARE OFF and AWAY
3. LISTENING TO THE SPEAKER
4. STAY ON TASK
Consequences for Art Room Rule Violations:
If you break a rule the following consequences will be met-
1. Verbal warning, lose a behavior point, documentation
2. Student/Teacher conference
3. Seat change/Recovery Time
4. Time owed after class/during lunch
5. Detention/Contact home

**Behavior Grade:
Each week you will begin with 16 points out of 20 (a low B). You may earn additional points or lose them
based on following/ going above and beyond or breaking the art room rules. This total grade is worth 10% of
your Nine Weeks POINTS.



GRADING Learning will be assessed in this class using a variety of methods:
-Tests/Projects/Quizzes (Weighted at 50%)
-Classwork/Participation (Weighted at 25%)

Because this is a studio class, most work will be in either the Project or Classwork categories

Overall grade will be based the schools established GRADING SCALE as follows:
A=90-100 B=80-89 C=70-79 D=60-69 F=59 or below

Assignments:
Artist a Day Packets 5 points each entry x 40 entries=200 pts (each nine weeks)
Intro to Elements of Art (week one) = 60 points
Week One notes/syllabus = 40 points
Elements Puzzle = 100 points

Projects- Rubrics will be given/explained at the beginning of each project. I will provide a SELF-ASSESSMENT
RUBRIC at the beginning of each project so that all students understand how to get an A on each
assignment.

Each project will be worth 200 points.
For each project you will be responsible for the following assignments:
Handouts = 25 points
Notes/Exit Slips = 25 points (5 pts each)
Practice Exercises = 100 points

Nine Weeks:1. LINE/VALUE -drawing various media and techniques 2. COLOR/SHAPE painting using various
media and techniques.

Nine Weeks: 1. TEXTURE/SHAPE -weaving and metals techniques 2. SPACE AND FORM perspective
drawing.

*TBA: On-going project due at the end of the semester (100 points)
Projects turned in on time, will be graded in a timely fashion. Late projects will be graded as time allows.

I will maintain accurate and current records of your progress in the online software available for you or
your parent/guardian to view at any time. There is a computer available for use in checking grades during
appropriate class time.

ENTERING THE CLASSROOM/BEGINNING CLASS:

Read whiteboard upon entering the room for needed supplies.
Pick up your folder/any handouts/supplies on the way to your seat.
Once at your seat, complete the bell work as assigned.
Work quietly until Mrs. Fred begins class. (Non-essentials can wait a few minutes)

STORING AND WORKING ON ARTWORK:
Art projects should NOT LEAVE THE ART ROOM! If you need more time, come see me!
I will allow a one-week grace period after the class has moved on if you need additional time and
werent absent.
Students may work on in the art room during lunch ONLY if they are behind. Get a pass from me in
advance!
Be sure to label ALL of your work with: NAME, CLASS, PERIOD and DATE

IF TARDY
If you arrive after class starts (check the clock by the door/door is closed), enter the room and sign in at the Tardy
Binder, paperclip your pass to the page. You will lose 1 point for every unexcused tardy. ASK FOR A PASS IF YOU
WERE SPEAKING TO AN ADULT

When you have been ABSENT
YOU are responsible to make up any instruction you may have missed. Check the ABSENCE BINDER. There will be
any handouts, web addresses, directions you may have missed. You will have the same amount of days you
missed, as you were absent to make up any work.

You are also responsible for 40 Artist a Day entries whether you are absent or not each nine weeks. You can look
it up on a PC in the room or check the ABSENCE BINDER for print outs of the days you missed.

Art projects should NOT LEAVE THE ART ROOM! If you need more time, come see me! I will allow a one-week
grace period after the class has moved on if you need additional time and werent absent.
Students may work on in the art room during lunch ONLY if they are behind.

At the end of class:
I will let you know when we have 5 minutes to clean up. Please do NOT clean up early! Our time is valuable. You
may earn an extra behavior point by wiping tables/sweeping. Do NOT leave a mess for me or other students,
INCLUDING THE SINK AREA.
Stay seated at your seat until dismissed so Mrs. Fredriksen can check the room

I am excited to be teaching art to high school students at Parma Community. I have been teaching art for over
seven years to students of all ages. At Parma Community I will be teaching Digital Imaging, Ceramics,
Art 1 and Drawing. I look forward to having your student in my art class! Please review this syllabus and
the rules and expectations of Parma Community with your student so that we can focus on learning!
