Es war einmal ein Mann, der hatte einen Esel,
welcher schon lange Jahre unverdrossen die Scke
in die Mhle getragen hatte. Nun aber gingen die
Krfte des Esels zu Ende, so dass er zur rbeit nicht
!ehr taugte. "a dachte der #err daran, ihn
wegzugeben. ber der Esel !erkte, dass sein #err
etwas $%ses i! Sinn hatte, lief fort und !achte sich
auf den &eg nach $re!en. "ort, so !einte er,
k%nnte er 'a Stadt!usikant werden.
There once was a man who had a donke( that
had carried the grain sacks to the !ill tirelessl(
for !an( long (ears. $ut his strength was failing
and he was growing !ore and !ore unfit for
work. So his !aster began to consider getting rid
of hi!. $ut the donke(, who beca!e aware that
his !aster had so!ething evil in !ind, ran awa(
and set out on the road to $re!en. )here he
thought he could surel( beco!e a town !usician.
ls er schon eine &eile gegangen war, fand er einen
Jagdhund a! &ege liegen, der '!!erlich heulte.
*&aru! heulst du denn so, +ack an,- fragte der
Esel.
fter he had walked for a while, he found a
hunting hound l(ing on the road, howling .itifull(.
-&h( are (ou howling so, old fellow,/ asked the
donke(.
*ch-, sagte der #und, *weil ich alt bin, 'eden )ag
schwcher werde und auch nicht !ehr auf die Jagd
kann, wollte !ich !ein #err totschie0en. "a hab ich
1ei0aus geno!!en. ber wo!it soll ich nun !ein
$rot verdienen,-

"er #und war einverstanden, und sie gingen
!itsa!!en weiter. Es dauerte nicht lange, da sahen
sie eine Katze a! &ege sitzen, die !achte ein 7esicht
wie drei )age 1egenwetter. *&as ist denn
dir in die 8uere geko!!en, alter $art.utzer,-
fragte der Esel.
)he hound agreed, and the( went on together. 3t
wasn9t long before the( saw a cat sitting on the
.ath, with a face like three rain( da(s. 2Now
then, old whiskers, what has gone wrong for

*&er kann da lustig sein, wenn9s eine! an den Kragen
geht-, antwortete die Katze. *&eil ich nun
alt bin, !eine :hne stu!.f werden und ich lieber
hinter de! ;fen sitze und s.inne, als nach Musen
heru!'age, hat !ich !eine <rau ersufen wollen.
3ch konnte !ich zwar noch davonschleichen, aber
nun ist guter 1at teuer. &o soll ich 'etzt hin,-

so !iteinander gingen, ka!en sie an eine! #of

aus 4eibeskrften.

went on together.
Sie konnten aber die Stadt $re!en an eine! )ag
nicht erreichen und ka!en abends in einen &ald, wo
sie bernachten wollten. "er Esel und der #und
legten sich unter einen gro0en $au!, die Katze
kletterte auf einen st, und der #ahn flog bis in den
&i.fel, wo es a! sichersten fr ihn war.

wo das 4icht war. $ald sahen sie es heller
schi!!ern, und es wurde i!!er gr%0er, bis sie vor
ein hellerleuchtetes 1uberhaus ka!en. "er Esel, als
der gr%0te, nherte sich de! <enster und schaute
hinein.

#ahn hinauf und setzte sich der Katze auf den Ko.f.

bellte, die Katze !iaute, und der #ahn krhte. "arauf
strzten sie durch das <enster in die Stube hinein,

great fright out into the forest.
Nun setzten sich die vier 7esellen an den )isch, und
'eder a0 nach #erzenslust von den S.eisen, die ih!
a! besten sch!eckten.
)he four co!.anions then sat down at the table,
each eating to his heart9s content the dishes that
tasted best to hi!.
ls sie fertig waren, l%schten sie das 4icht aus, und
'eder suchte sich eine Schlafsttte nach seine!
7esch!ack. "er Esel legte sich auf den Mist, der
#und hinter die )r, die Katze auf den #erd bei der
war!en sche, und der #ahn flog auf das "ach
hinauf. Bnd weil sie !de waren von ihre! langen
&eg, schliefen sie bald ein.
&hen the( were done, the( .ut out the light and
each sought out a slee.ing .lace according to his
own taste. )he donke( laid hi!self down in the
!anure, the hound behind the door, the cat u.on
the hearth near the war! ashes, and the rooster
.erched hi!self on the roof. nd being tired fro!
their long walk, the( soon went to slee..
ls Mitternacht vorbei war und die 1uber von
weite! sahen, dass kein 4icht !ehr i! #aus brannte
und alles ruhig schien, s.rach der #au.t!ann@ *&ir
htten uns doch nicht sollen ins $ockshorn 'agen
lassen.- Er schickte einen 1uber zurck, u!
nachzusehen, ob noch 'e!and i! #ause wre.
&hen it was .ast !idnight, and the robbers saw
fro! afar that the light was no longer burning in
their house, and all a..eared Cuiet, the ca.tain
said, 2&e reall( ought not to have let ourselves
be scared off like that.2 #e sent one of the
robbers back to check if an(one was still in the
house.
"er 1uber fand alles still. Er ging in die Kche und
wollte ein 4icht anznden. "a sah er die feurigen
ugen der Katze und !einte, es wren glhende
Kohlen. Er hielt ein Schwefelh%lzchen daran, dass es
<euer fangen sollte. ber die Katze verstand keinen
S.a0, s.rang ih! ins 7esicht und kratzte ihn aus
4eibeskrften. "a erschrak er gewaltig und wollte zur
#intertr hinauslaufen. ber der #und, der da lag,
s.rang auf und biss ihn ins $ein. ls der 1uber ber
den #of a! Misthaufen vorbeirannte, gab ih! der Esel
noch einen tchtigen Schlag !it de! #interfu0. "er
#ahn aber, der von de! 4r! aus de! Schlaf
geweckt worden war, rief vo! "ache herunter@

the kitchen to light a candle, and, taking the fier(
e(es of the cat for live coals, he held a !atch to
the! to light it. $ut the cat did not understand
the 'oke, and flew in his face, s.itting and
scratching. #e was dreadfull( frightened, and ran
to the back door, but the dog, who la( there
s.rang u. and bit his leg. nd as he ran across

a s!art kick with his hind foot. )he rooster, too,
who had been awakened b( the noise, cried down

den Schel! her=9 "a !achte ich, dass ich fortka!.-
)hen the robber ran back as fast as he could to
his ca.tain, and said, 2;h, there is a horrible
witch sitting in the house, who s.at on !e and
scratched !( face with her long claws. nd b(
the door there9s a !an with a knife, who stabbed
!e in the leg. nd in the (ard there lies a black
!onster, who beat !e with a wooden club. nd
above, u.on the roof, sits the 'udge, who called
out, bring the rogue here to !e. So 3 got awa( as
fast as 3 could.2

wollten.
fter this the robbers never again dared enter
the house. $ut it suited the four !usicians of
$re!en so well that the( did not care to leave it
an( !ore.
