Int ended Learning Out comes: To compare advertisements in a specific
media text and analyse the features of the advertisements based on target
audience.


Curricul um:
Compare texts including media texts that represent ideas and events in
different ways, explaining the effects of the different approaches
(ACELY1708).
Participate in and contribute to discussions, clarifying and interrogating
ideas, developing and supporting arguments, sharing and evaluating
information, experiences and opinions (ACELY1709).
Analyse how text structures and language features work together to meet
the purpose of a text (ACELY1711).


Prior Knowl edge: Students will have read magazines during their life, or
witnessed others including their parents or peers reading magazines.
Advertisements from magazines and other media texts including television and
tablets will have had a large presence in most/ all students lives.


Task:
Examine the poster that lists different magazines.
Skim through the provided magazines as individuals or in pairs that
match up with those on the poster, and notice the types of advertisements
that exist in each magazine.

Allow each individual or pair to explain the types of advertisements they
saw in their magazine and list them on the poster.
Examine the cut outs of different advertisements that have been provided
and think about which magazine they may be from and why.
Think about questions such as:
! What is the difference between an advertisement and a photo?
Which is more appealing and in what way?
! What is the focus of each advertisement? What is the
advertisement trying to achieve?
! What is the focus audience of each advertisement? Why?
! What are the similarities and differences between each
advertisement?
