Identification of fake reviews for online products in e-

commerce websites by analysing unusual review patterns




Problem Statement

To create a system which would analyse user reviews for various products
collected from popular e-commerce websites, using which fake reviews that would
promote or damage products or brands would be identified by analysing unusual
review patterns.

Abstract

With the rapid growth of online shopping, it has become a common practice for
people to read the reviews posted on the product page before making a decision to
purchase the product or not. While reviews are very helpful in making this decision,
people can take advantage of this by creating automated systems to post fake reviews
or by posting fake reviews manually. Reviewers by giving positive or negative
opinions to some target products to promote or to damage the products or brands
reputations can mislead the prospective customers. This work aims on identifying
these fake reviews by finding unusual review patterns like very high ratings on a bad
product or very low ratings on a good product. To achieve this, an online review
dataset has to be acquired from popular e-commerce websites like flipkart.com,
amazon.in etc. using which the fake reviews can be identified.
