Life Cycle Stages

Ant Butterfly
Egg The eggs are small white and
cylindrical. The female queen ant will
search for a suitable nesting site
where she will lay her tiny eggs. The
female ant does not leave her next
until her the first born workers are
able to forage for food (AntARK,
2014).

Larva The next stage in the life
cycle is the larva stage where they
look similar to maggots. At this stage
in life cycle the larva do not have
eyes of major organs and are limited
to wiggling and opening their mouths.
The larva is covered with tiny hairs
that stick to each other which enable
the queen and workers to pick up
larva and provide larva with food
(AntARK, 2014).

Pupa This is the stage where the
ants begin to form into an adult ant.
Most species of ants spin a silk
cocoon around themselves where
Eggs The eggs are tiny cylindrical
objects. The female butterfly
attaches the egg on small leaves or
stems that are close to the intended
caterpillar food source (The
childrens butterfly site, N.D.).

Caterpillar Eggs hatch into a
caterpillar (or larva) and it is long,
wormlike stage of the butterfly.
Caterpillars generally have different
shapes and lines on their body. This
stage in the butterflys life cycle is
the feeding and growth stage where
the caterpillar undergoes rapid
growing and sheds its skin four or
more times (The childrens butterfly
site, N.D.).

Chrysalis The chrysalis (or pupa)
stage is the transformation stage.
This stage is when the caterpillar
changes into the adult butterfly
structure. This metamorphosis is
due to the caterpillar tissues being
broken down to create the adult
form. The cocoon is generally a
brown or green colour that can be
inside the young ant will enclose and
develop. The pale yellow ant will
emerge from the cocoon and will
quickly darken due to their
exoskeleton hardening (AntARK,
2014).

Adult Ant This where the ant
becomes fully grown. There are a
number of different ants within a
colony of ants due to there being
different jobs which is crucial to their
survival. Therefore the adult ant may
be a Queen, worker, solider, princess
and drone (AntARK, 2014).

Butterfly This is the adult form of
the butterfly lifecycle. This is the
reproductive and mobile stage of the
butterfly where is will undergo
mating. This stage of the butterfly is
where it is generally bright coloured
insect (The childrens butterfly site,
N.D.).
