KWL+Q

Research connection:
According to Ogle, 1986, Carr and Ogle, 1987, and Willis, 1995, KWL provides student opportunity to learn how to
comprehend and to improve reading, listening, and learning tasks.

Step by step:
Step 1
Introduction of the topic, such as read aloud, class discussion, video or DVD, etc.
Step 2
Invite student to share and write on their charts what they already Know about the topic. This could be done
independently, in pairs, small groups etc.
Step 3
Investigate what students Want to know about the topic. Have them write it on their chart under the W.
Step 4
When the topic of study comes to a close students need to return to the KWL-chart. Teacher will ask the
students to review the K and the W columns of their KWL-chart. Follow up with a discussion about what
they have Learned from this unit of study and have them write their thoughts in the L-column.
Step 5
Have students extend the learning process by generating questions not answered during review of the KWL-
chart. These questions should be written down in the Q-column.
