Introduction

In lab 6-3 we measured the rate of transpiration. In order for all of this to happen the plant cells must
expose wet cell walls to the atmosphere. This is called transpiration, and is often referred to as the
carbon dioxide-water compromise. This whole process is to help plants take in carbon dioxide for
photosynthesis. The theory of this process is that transpiration will cause the water from the stoma to
go back into the atmosphere. According to the lab manual about 50% of the rain water is returned to
the atmosphere by transpiration.
Materials and Methods
The materials needed for Transpiration of Water are two potted plants with different leaf surface area
and a pot without a plant but soil only. The methods for this process is to wrap each pot and soil with
plastic wrap to prevent evaporation from the container or soil. We used plastic wrap to stop
evaporation from the soil, a lamp that is strong, and a fan. We were to wrap each pot in plastic wrap. In
order to gain appropriate results we had to weigh the plants before we put light and fan on it.
Results
Plant A weighed 225.2, plant B weighed 167.3, and the pot without a plant weighed 148.1. The end
result of the plants are followed: Plant A 223, Plant B 167.2, Plant C 147.9.
Discussion
In order to get results we put the lamp to the plant and use the fan to increase the rate of transpiration.
This whole process lasted for an hour. At the end of the hour we weighed the plants again and the
plants shrunk a little. The weight change is small because of transpiration.
